Physical Performance Enhancement Putting Health at Risk

12 02 2020

Updated: 27 February 2020 by Marc Woodard

Im sure most of you out there have noticed the low-T commercial ads.  The “T” is for Testosterone and defined as the male hormone that develops during puberty and maintains masculine characteristics throughout a mans life. As men age testosterone levels tend to decline (hence low-T).  We’ll first cover testosterone therapy and then the herbs that are known to increase, or influence testosterone production. Women’s use of testosterone to enhance physical performance is discussed below and in full detail within Ageless MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More” book. Click on the banner below to read the free book preview at Amazon.

The questions most men ask, is one type of treatment better than the other, how safe is it and is it right for me?

I recall about a year ago seeing a commercial on one of the big 3 networks stations that promoted, low-T asking questions like, feel like somethings missing, don’t have enough energy, or want more romance in your life? Seems harmless enough right?  Could fixing a low-T condition be that simple?  And is it for everyone?

Don’t be deceived by a great advertising spot that promotes a therapy and/or herb that offers a quick fix for a male symptomatic problem. Androgen (steroid hormone) therapy has been around for a long time.  Whether or not this type of treatment is right for you can only be answered by a physician.  And the doctors that your primary care physician should refer you to that specialize in hormone replacement therapy are known as an endocrine physician.  An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor that specialize in diagnosing glandular disease.

I’ve often cited though my writings, there is no way man could ever make a chemical product that wouldn’t have a health risk associated with it.  And just like weight loss diet formulas that promote fast results… when repeated too often will eventually ruin the body ability to lose weight naturally.  Raising testosterone levels “when not needed” presents similar types of metabolic challenges and other health risks associated with its use if not supervised and applied correctly [Ageless MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More,”]. Learn how to age gracefully and live the lifestyle you need, want and deserve now!

Let’s first understand why testosterone in a man’s body is important and what happens to its production during the aging process.  Testosterone is produced by the testes and important for balanced metabolic body function, to build muscle, bone, lowering the voice and activates the sex drive and sperm production during puberty.

Science has confirmed that as a man ages testosterone levels continue to drop after the age of 40, about 1-2% a year thereafter.  These numbers appear to vary slightly depending on the study.  As you age you should expect that your body will provide a proportionate amount of testosterone to maintain healthy male characteristics relative to age and throughout life.  This is part of the normal aging process, or aging gracefully.  There is no scientific evidence that shows by increasing testosterone levels for those diagnosed with low-T, or especially when one does not have an androgen deficiency problem – that there will be a significant benefit.

“Let’s first understand why testosterone in a man’s body is important and what happens to its production during the aging process. … If testosterone levels fall below 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood than the general recommendation is to regulate toward mid-normal range.” Learn more about men and women’s SAFE use of enhancement and anti-aging products in Ageless MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More” Ch 15, Anti-aging and Physical Performance-Enhancement Truths. There is a very low percentage of men that have lower than average low-T relative to age.  For those that do have unusual low levels of testosterone, this is the demographic that often receive a benefit from hormone therapy treatment says Karen Herbst, PhD., M.D., (an endocrinologist with the University of CA).

Little is known about the long-term effects of low testosterone and increasing those levels to normal range.  Science clearly understands that this hormone has an important connection to body weight and possibly cardiovascular health.  In other words, increasing testosterone levels may or may not be of health benefit for those that suffer with the following medical conditions:  osteoporosis – thinning of bone, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart health.  Andre Araujo, PhD, epidemiologist and researcher says illness that causes high blood pressure and diabetes for example could be the cause of low testosterone.  So for those that are diagnosed with low testosterone, some other illness, or disease may need to be treated first before the body can naturally elevate hormone levels.

Normal levels relative to age is important because a man’s overall health is dependent on these levels.  If testosterone levels fall below 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood than the general recommendation is to regulate toward mid-normal range.  This treatment can be accomplished through skin absorption patches, tablets, or injections.  This therapy provides those with below average testosterone production a quality of life benefit, as opposed to those that didn’t receive treatment.

If you are diagnosed with androgen deficiency (no other illness, or disease is the cause of your low-T condition), you may need testosterone therapy for life to correct the condition.  But if you start hormone therapy your testes will stop producing its own hormone.  This occurs once you influence hormone production with an enhancer because your body self regulates to maintain normal hormone balances.  Your body will gradually begin producing its own testosterone once you stop therapy to its previous levels.

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that testosterone therapy will be of benefit when not androgen deficient.  As a matter of fact, medical science indicates many types of health problems may occur if one participates in hormone therapy without a screening and not under a doctor’s supervision.  Also, you need to know that not all scientific data is in on the safety results of testosterone therapy.

However, Herbst states, about 10% of men don’t get much of a response from therapy, while 90% see some sort of symptom improvement and 1 in 10 are ecstatic.  It is also stated that most of the men in clinical studies state improvement to erectile dysfunction and sex drive.  Primarily what these low-T marketers are selling is a quick fix for erectile dysfunction and sex drive.

Men diagnosed with the following conditions should absolutely not self administer, or participate without supervision in any type of testosterone enhancer program/product: men with metastatic prostate, or breast cancer.  This is because too much testosterone can cause these cancers to grow.  Other conditions that can be made worse when participating in testosterone therapy:  if you suffer from sleep apnea, severe congestive heart failure, severe benign prostatic hypertrophy, or high red blood cell count (erythrocytosis).

Outside of clinical testosterone therapy there are many herbs marketed as treatment to improve libido and muscle strength as advertised by marketers.  Beware, science tells us there are no known herbals that can be used to treat androgen deficiency.  Only that the herbals mentioned below and many more like them can influence higher levels of testosterone production.  These levels vary for each individual and relative to age.  And even if you use these products there is no guarantee that you’ll receive a benefit and in fact may be predisposing yourself to illness and disease with similar findings related to androgen therapy health risks.

Women also use enhancement products to produce testosterone levels to increase muscle mass and strength … yes, women naturally produce testosterone at a fractional level compared to men. Learn more about women’s SAFE use of enhancement products in Ageless MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More” Ch 15, Anti-aging and Physical Performance-Enhancement Truths. For men thinking about a low-T product, it is recommended you discuss suspected low-T symptoms with a doctor who specializes in anti-aging and hormone therapy to address your concerns.  In this way you’ll ensure you’re not just trying various products that promise to:  improve sexual performance, improve mood or memory, increase energy, lower cholesterol, build muscle, lose body fat, and/or reduce high blood pressure (and anything else these marketers promise you).  If you know nothing about balancing hormones and you become sold on a product for which you now feel you are receiving a benefit; be suspicious and concerned and inquire about long-term use and health risks.  Herbs seem harmless enough to many consumers, but it’s what you don’t know that can cause internal metabolic harm.

Chapter 18 Customized Fitness Programming shows the optimum strength building process that naturally increases growth hormone and testosterone production naturally.

If you do not have a testosterone deficiency problem, it is not recommended you engage in influencing testosterone production without medical advisement and supervision.  MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More,” Chapter 18, Customized Fitness Programming, shows the optimum strength building process, programs and routines that naturally increase growth hormone and testosterone production naturally – at any age. Simply put, it is wise to consult with your physician before you engage in any hormone therapy/enhancer program regardless of whether it’s chemically synthesized or a marketed herbal product.

The most popular herbs sold in the market boast claims that their products influence testosterone production naturally and perceived to be safe.

Four popular herbal enhancer products mixed into blends, or sold individually in high dose concentrations:   Horny Goat Weed, Mucuna Pruriens, Tongkat Ali and Ginseng.  If you want to know more about these herbal products, simply type the word into your Internet browser.

Just from the shear fact each one of the herbs listed, including those that are not, stimulate the release of testosterone by influencing the pituitary gland and testes should raise concern.  These hormonal metabolic functionalities within the body also have a huge influence on many other regulatory metabolic mechanisms.  For example, to increase testosterone production without understanding the risks, especially if you have an diagnosed medical condition could manifest itself into a chronic medical condition.  However, as stated, it is also true that men need to be within a specific safe testosterone range to stay healthy.  Being too low or too high appears to create unhealthy medical conditions and then disease risk for men.

The most common types of illness and disease may occur if testosterone levels are too high, or too low:  rapid heartbeat and rhythm disturbances, anxiety, fatigue, overstimulation, irritability, restlessness, impatience, easily angered, increased blood pressure and body temperature.  Additionally, some herbs can have adverse effects on those suffering from breast and prostate cancer; heart, kidney, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea and liver disease and also weaken the immune system.  Other side effects:  nausea, diarrhea, nose bleeds, low blood pressure, breast pain, depressive mania when mixing product with antidepressants.  Gross overdose: Seizures, convulsions and delirium.

Another question you should ask yourself; if you self administer how do you know you’re not too high in blood testosterone?  Or low when you stop dosing, because the natural production of testosterone shuts down between starting and stopping doses?  Manipulating the start and stop of self administering and producing natural body testosterone is hard on the metabolic mechanisms and overall health if not supervised correctly.

I stand by the statement I made at the beginning of this article.  There is no way man could ever manipulate nature and create a quick results product that would not have some adverse health risk.  To manipulate the physiology through quick results products is to potentially break the metabolism, thereby causing other ill-health conditions.

“By administering an overriding circulatory enhancer to correct erectile dysfunction for example… How do you know you’re not masking a serious prostate, urethra, testicular disease? ” Learn more about performance enhancement drugs and supplements and risks. Click on the chart link to read the free preview on MirrorAthlete “Overweight and Unfit No More” book at Amazon. Chapter 15 covers “Anti-aging and Physical Performance-Enhancement Truths”

Here is something to think about if you’re administering low-T supplementation or self-administering weekly steroid shots, or growth hormone herb products to enhance physical and/or sexual performance… and the product is purchased through a local retailer, distributor, private dealer, or mail order and not monitored by a doctor. Are you sure that some other ill-health problem is not the cause of a physical or sexual performance dysfunction? And you’re not masking a metabolic-circulatory and/or disease. And the low energy and lack of physical stamina to achieve your fitness and physical performance goals are not caused by some other underlying disease, environmental, diet, food or drug complication on physiology. And if Low-T is not your metabolic nemesis and you self-administer without a doctor’s supervision, aren’t you unnecessarily increasing health risk?

For example, by self-administering an overriding circulatory enhancer to correct erectile dysfunction. How do you know you’re not masking a serious prostate, urethra, testicular disease?  Unless you’re a specialist in hormone replacement therapy (endocrist), or an urologist [one who specializes in male/female urinary tracts], how can you be sure?  The answer is you can’t.  Millions of men and women will continue to put their health at risk because the market manipulators will not error on the side of caution.  Instead, they’ll promote the benefits and down play the risks.  Whys that? Because performance enhancement supplements and drugs are a lucrative business and is sold within a globally connected marketplace. Where consumers can get their hands on just about any product they want.

There’s an important caveat to low-T therapy treatment … and that’s to safely use it for the sake of good health. Unless supervised by a medical doctor, I don’t believe the benefit of self administering would out weigh the potential health risks when not monitored. This is an important observation in caution since a very low percentage of men are actually diagnosed with androgen deficiency.  And women, in almost all hormone deficiency cases don’t need testosterone since their main hormone production for good health is highly dependent on progesterone and estrogen. Another thing to keep in mind – Science doesn’t understand what damage will occur in varying situations through long-term performance enhancement and anti-aging drug dosing. Especially if not androgen deficient. Long-term… even physician treated and monitored; and self-administered performance enhancement drug statistics don’t yet exist.

If you do choose to self administer low-T products to resolve a problem, at a minimum pay attention to the side effects listed and get monitored by a doctor.  If you or your loved ones note aggressive personality changes, or any of the listed symptom or side effect, immediately consult your doctor.

Teenage Vaping Health Risks

10 08 2019

Over the last few years vaping devices [e-cigarettes] have reached an all-time high in consumer sales and use within the teenage population. What many don’t realize are the known and unknown health risks consequences associated with vaping.

For those unfamiliar with these devices, they typically look like a pen or computer memory stick. They use batteries to heat an element inside the device to aerosol the nicotine or marijuana liquid or solid during inhalation.” The device materials and chemicals used to produce the discrete smokeless vapor, or smoke plumb may or may not increase health risk.

Should consumers be concerned about the inhaled aerosolized chemicals?

There’s many studies that show nicotine is toxic to a developing fetus and cause harm to developing brains up to the age of 20. In general there are approximately seven health hazards associated with nicotine consumption. It is shown to have a negative impact on the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, immune and reproductive systems. And by-way of various mechanisms can lead to DNA mutation and lead to cancer. Vaping marijuana to-date does not show the same health risk consequences as nicotine. However there are dependency and psychological effects of use that require further study.

Other health risks occur from material breakdown of any heated e-device and nicotine-chemical mix within the liquid pod delivery system. For example, Some brands contain chemicals including formaldehyde — often used in building materials — and another ingredient used in antifreeze that can cause cancer. Some use a buttery-tasting chemical called diacetyl. Diacetyl is a well-known harmful chemical, which, among other things, causes a lung disease called ‘popcorn lung,'” says Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. https://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/features/vape-debate-electronic-cigarettes#1. It is the sweat-buttery flavors acknowledged by children that attract them to use these products.

Then there’s the Propylene Glycol (PG) that creates the smooth taste and fog-like smoke appearance during exhalation. Although the FDA classifies this consumer additive safe, according to the World Health Organization the acceptable dietary intake is 25mg for every kilogram of body weight. Excess consumption of PG is cited in multiple research studies shown to cause: Skin irritation and allergic reactions, potentially toxic to the kidneys and liver and cause neurological symptoms.

Although it appears any form of vaping has health risks, it is estimated e-cigarettes to be a whopping 95 percent less harmful than regular cigarettes in a 2015 press release. In fact, scientists were learning that e-cigs were a very effective method for people looking to stop smoking [Public Health England].

However it is the discrete e-vap smokeless device parents should be made aware. The Juul, a pod mod device, is worrying to addiction researchers. Juuls arrived late to the e-cigarette market in 2015. Sleek and slim, with an appearance that mirrors a flash drive, the Juul has been established among youth as the vaping tool of choice. A single Juulpod contains 40 mg of nicotine, which is similar to the nicotine yield of a pack of cigarettes. https://www.yalemedicine.org/stories/teen-vaping/

Many of these devices can vape-deliver nicotine or marijuana’s active ingredients without producing any visible smoke or smell. In knowing more about these products – parents and educators can help children become knowledgeable on the addictive qualities and health risks and avoid vaping especially during the developmental years.

National Cancer Cases on the Rise – But So are Survival Rates

9 07 2019

Last Updated:  July 9, 2019, Marc Woodard

It is a fact that one or more factors – environmental toxins, poor diet, sedentary and other unhealthy lifestyle habits can cause cell mutation, formation of cancerous tumors and metastasis of those cells. Those at highest risk are those predisposed to cancer genetically.

Are we all doomed to get cancer? The simple answer is NO.

Ageless MirrorAthlete – Covers Cancer Prevention and So Much More… for sale at Amazon, B&N, iUniverse, etc.,

Although the mortality rates caused by cancer are on the rise, so is the survivorship through lifesaving treatment and lifestyle change. However to minimize the risk of getting cancer requires taking cancer prevention seriously.

It is a fact, cancer mortality rates throughout the globe have increased over the last decade. 7.6 million People died of cancer in the world during 2007. 13% of all deaths are due to cancer” (American Cancer Society 2007). Unfortunately Cancer is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths in 2012 (World Health Organization, 2015).

The number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030″ (cancer.gov 2019). Although the data shows us cancer cases are on the rise, so is survivor-ship. “More than 16.9 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2019, and this number is projected to grow to more than 22.1 million by January 1, 2030. These estimates do not include carcinoma in situ (CIS) of any site (except urinary bladder) or basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers.” (Miller, Kimberly D., et al. 2019). It appears  increased survivor-ship projections is the result of a combination of an increased aging population, advances in early detection and treatment.

The number of cancer survivors continues to grow in the United States despite overall declining age standardized incidence rates in men and stable rates in women. This reflects an increasing number of new cancer diagnoses resulting from a growing and aging population as well as advancements in early detection and treatment. “Given this estimated projection and the various physical, financial, and other types of challenges that may come with survivorship, researchers concluded it is crucial to increase efforts to help cancer survivors live longer and healthier lives” (Miller, Kimberly D., et al. 2019).

As previously stated – the data tells us cancer cases are on the rise and with the advancement of science and prevention education [health literacy] cancer patients and those in remission are living longer. It appears more likely than not mortality rates associated with all types of cancer over the next decade is estimated to decline significantly and this is good news. As curing cancer is becoming a real possibility.

How does one get cancer?  There many ways one could acquire cancer through environment or habitual factors and behavioral actions. But one must also consider genetic predisposition. Does cancer run in the family? If a family member has had cancer, suspect you have a predisposition to a similar type of cancer. Once you’re aware of a family history, it is prudent to take preventative action to minimize the risk of getting it.

The American Cancer Society defines cancer as a disease which differs widely in cause and biology than any other. There are approximately 9 risk factors leading to cancer:  Tobacco smoking, alcohol, diets low in fruit and vegetables, limited physical exercise, unsafe sex, urban air pollution, domestic use of solid fuels and contaminated injections (Hep B & C).

Once cancerous tumors form they continue to grow and divide at the cellular level and frequently spread to other parts of the body[metastasis]. Regardless of metastasis the immune-lymph and circulatory blood systems go into overdrive to kill and remove the intruder cancer cell. Once cancer tumors are formed, they can affect other healthy cells surrounding them. They have the ability to target other tissues and organs throughout the body, spread and infect, grow and further divide making it impossible for the body’s defense systems to remove the cancer.

Unless medical treatment is received in a timely manner to stop a malignant growth… remission may not be possible. Especially if the cancer metastasizes [spreads to other parts of the body]. It is for this reason, if diagnosed with Stage 2-3 cancer, it becomes very risky to put off conventional cancer treatment to target and kill it. Once cancer reaches stage 4, the odds of remission and survival is reduced regardless of treatment choice. Survival increases when immediate diagnosis and conventional treatment is applied during the early stages of cancer diagnosis. Through the advancements of preventative medicines and science and lifestyle change survivor rates continue to climb.

If an unhealthy lifestyle and/or environment continues its course over an extended period of time, it becomes more likely cell mutation will occur. It is through toxic environment [stress, toxins, pollution, etc., causing agents]; and/or unhealthy habits and behavior[sedentary lifestyle, smoking, drugs, drinking, etc.,] and when genetically predisposed creates an incubator for cancer to form and reside.

Although the body is capable of filtering and removing many toxins through the lymphatic and circulatory systems – it has limitations. It is the frequency, duration and toxicity on genetic expression that puts these systems into overdrive. When we get sick, it is because our filtration systems are unable to keep up with the stress induced and toxins attacking it.

These circulatory filter systems have 3 basic functions. 1) To clean the blood and remove waste from the body. 2) They absorb and transport fatty acids from the intestine and digestive system. 3) The lymph node cells called lymphocytes provide immunological defenses against disease-causing agents [i.e., cancer]. When you increase cancer risk factors these lymphatic and circulatory filter system(s) become less functionally efficient at removing cancer causing toxins.

Lifestyle Changes Everyone Can Make to Reduce Cancer Risk

  1. Obesity increases risk of developing cancer.  Reduce body weight through healthy diet and exercise.
  2. Reduce processed foods consumption and eat more whole foods.
  3. Reduce refined sugars, excessive fats and heavy processed foods. Increase plant based foods to decrease risk of prostate and breast cancer (men/women).
  4. Studies have linked stomach cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer with grilled meat and red meats in general. Carcinogens are released through the burning of the aromatic hydrocarbon which often occurs when you overheat and burn fats. Then inhale the carcinogenic burnt smoke fumes. If you burn cooking oils, open the windows, dump and refresh it.
  5. Cancer trials suggest that vitamin supplementation and/or consumption of fruitsIMG_20130405_175321 and vegetables will reduce cancer risks.
  6. Take a daily vitamin & mineral supplement daily. Especially if you’re not getting 3-4 servings per day of plant foods.
  7. Give up artificial sweeteners (Aspartame). Controlled animal studies reveal a strong connection to cancer, obesity and diabetes. Read your food labels carefully. There are now +6000 food products under various labels that list Aspartame as other sweetener, sugar substitute and as a healthy sweetener alternative.  Sodas, flavored water, specialized coffee’s, processed baked deserts, candy and even some diet foods have high concentrates of Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners in them.
  8. If you live in a heavily carbon monoxide or chemical producing environment and/or the drinking water smells & tastes like chemical and/or suffer from respiratory problems and health is suffering – consider moving out of the area if possible. If not possible, filter your water and indoor air filtration systems.
  9. Exercise more – If exercising outside, do so on low smog days and indoors on high smog days. Also don’t burn wood or other heating fuels in unvented room space.
  10. Remove toxic home use products and replace with clean green products.
  11. The sun and man-made equipment produce UV (Ultraviolet) rays. These UV rays areDCIM100GOPRO known as electromagnetic radiation. The sun is our main source of this radiation. Man-made UV radiation is produced by tanning beds, x-rays and welding torches for example. Limit exposure to electromagnetic radiation by cover up and/or use UV protective sunscreen and sunglasses to avoid overexposure of the sun’s rays when possible.
  12. Stop smoking and consuming alcohol and rec/non rec drug use. Minimize vaping [electronic cigarettes] habits. Early patient cases and medical experts show an aggravation connection to circulatory and lung systems through inhalation of  Propylene Glycol and nicotine within these vaping devices.
  13. Practice safe sex and never use a shared or unsterilized needles.
  14. Get frequent medical checkups – no less than annual.

The incidence of cancer cases rise dramatically with age and genetic predisposition. And when unhealthy lifestyle environment and activities are added those risk factors increase significantly. The good news for those unfortunate enough to experience cancer symptoms and treatment – there is a huge support network in preventative and evidence based medicine leading the way to increase survivorship and finding a cure. Through continued health literacy, prevention education and early stage cancer detection and treatment, patient survivorship will continue to increase as projected.

It is through the efforts of the medical and research organizations increased survivorship and finding a cure is possible. For survivors, the medical community has a plan to help you stay fit healthy and live long lives through enhanced provider services. “Future research should also focus on identifying best practices for engaging cancer survivors in adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle at the policy, health care system, and individual patient levels. Models for the integration of comprehensive care for cancer survivors and their caregivers, including self management, wellness and healthy lifestyle promotion, and cancer rehabilitation, are beginning to emerge. As the evidence base grows, efforts at the individual, provider, system, and policy levels will help cancer survivors live longer and healthier lives” (Miller, Kimberly D., et al. 2019).

Steve Jobs, Swayze and Landon’s Cancer Deaths Avoidable?

18 02 2019

Updated: 2/17/2019, Marc Woodard

Florida a popular place to retire – with the second highest state cancer cases nation wide.

Years ago I  was motivated to learn more about Pancreatic Cancer after hearing of Patrick Swayze’s diagnosis. Eighteen years earlier I recalled how shocked I was to hear about Michael Landon’s death from the same type of cancer in 1991.  And Steve Jobs in 2011.  I thought “what a loss of such talented and productive people.”

These events highlighted the insidious nature of cancer in general.  But especially brought national attention to pancreatic cancer. I wondered, “was the cause of cancer brought about by cultural-geographic, genetic, environment and/or a combination of various lifestyle risk factors.”

Initially when I wrote on this topic in 2009, I wasn’t able to deduce the exact cause that led to Swayze and Landon’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis. However today I feel the cause has narrowed down to a handful of likely possibilities relevant to behavior, habits and environmental health risk factors.

After Jobs death I became more aware of certain habits, genetic predisposition, stress, diet and environment that may hold the answers to identifying likely causes of cancer in general.  Today I’m more confident in saying, “pancreatic cancer is ‘likely’ related to a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors, whereas risk dramatically increases when genetically predisposed to acquire it.”

Steve Jobs lifestyle was different from the two actors [he wasn’t a smoker or drinker].  But had a dietary obsession with certain foods. Aside from this distinction all three of them lived in a dense area population… Los Angeles California, “the #1 cancer producing state (American Cancer Society, 2017).”  These famous people also appeared to be Type-A personalities [workaholics, competitive drivers and short fused, etc.,].  Type-A people are more likely to develop obsessive behaviors and habits to cope with stress which doubles the risk of coronary heart disease.

What is it about Alaska that makes it the 3rd lowest cancer producing state?  Number 1 – Wyoming, Number 2 – District of Columbia.

“Apparent links between psychological stress and cancer could arise in several ways. For example, people under stress may develop certain behaviors, such as smoking, overeating, or drinking alcohol, which increase a person’s risk for cancer [National Cancer Institute, 2017].”

Next I wanted to know how could anyone prevent, or remit cancer naturally from the body once it took hold?

First I needed to know a little more about these famous people lifestyles and could they have done anything different to prevent or change their cancer story?

California has the highest cancer cases… and significantly higher than the three other highest cancer producing states: FL, TX, NY

First, we’ll look at the two Hollywood legends to see what habits they had in common. Then compare lifestyles with Steve Jobs – Man behind Apple computers and iPhone.

Thereafter, review past and current national cancer statistics to draw a conclusion based on likely factors that contributed to their cancer and shortened lifespans.

Like most of you I was an avid follower and admirer of Michael Landon. My favorite childhood shows were Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven series.

Michael Landon was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma at the age of 54 – on 5 April 1991 and immediately underwent chemo therapy. His cancer had spread to his liver at first causing stomach cramps. Thereafter his pancreatic cancer was diagnosed 7 weeks later. The cancer became inoperable due to spreading within the liver and lymph nodes. Only 1% of patients with a metastasized cancer combination like this survive a five year period. He died in Malibu, CA on 1 July 1991. It was reported he drank heavily and had a four pack per day smoking habit.

“Pancreatic cancer is one of the faster spreading cancers; only about 4% of patients can expect to survive five years after their diagnosis (Park 2011).”

I also followed Hollywood legend Patrick Swazye. Three movies and one series in particular that memorialize his acting and physical abilities, “Dirty Dancing, Next of Kin, Roadhouse and the Beast series.”   Swayze was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in March 2008 and underwent chemo therapy with new experimental drugs (vatalanib/gemcitabine) to shrink the tumor and prevent the development of new blood vessels that would otherwise nourish it.

“He’s a strong guy, and he’s got a great attitude,” says Ron Wise, a Cedars-Sinai spokesman, “in my experience, that has a lot to do with how things go.” Patrick Swayze’s biggest regret was his smoking which he continued to do until his death. Doctor’s agreed, even if he quit at the time of diagnosis would have no bearing on his outcome …

High-temp charred foods especially meat absorb carcinogens from fuel source.

After more than a year of cancer, Swazye completed 13 episodes of the beast without pain medication.  Swayze Died, 14 Sept 2009 at the age of 57. The cancer ultimately spread to his liver. His life expectancy after diagnosis was 5 months.  He lived 20 months after diagnosis.

Steve Jobs founder of Apple Computer and arguably one of the most brilliant innovators and businessmen of all time had an uncommon form of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Oct 2003 (Park 2011).

It was reported throughout his life he was a vegan with an addictive and obsessive fructose [fruit] habit that rarely included the macro-nutrient protein [exception – he infrequently ate sushi and eel]. His food obsessions often limited him to apples, carrots, smoothies and fruit drinks for extended periods of time.

[He named the company after his fondness for apples.

“Research published in the November 2007 issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded there was “evidence for a greater pancreatic cancer risk with a high intake of fruit and juices but not with a high intake of sodas.”

“Although the UCLA findings are preliminary and more research needs to be done, the Reuters headline “Cancer Cells Slurp Up Fructose” is fair warning to all of us addicted to fruit and fruit juices (Daniel 2012).”

It was also reported he smoked marijuana and used LSD during his college years. It is likely he smoked weed during his battle with prostate cancer. This was not acknowledged by Jobs, but suspect by colleagues. Whether these things had anything to do with his cancer, I could not make that connection.

Nine months after diagnosis, Jobs underwent surgery to remove a tumor. In 2009 he underwent a liver transplant, a procedure appropriate for only a small number of patients with this type of rare pancreatic cancer. On October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated islet-cell – neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer … at the age of 56, Jobs died at his Palo Alto, California home around 3 p.m. (PDT).

There was an Interesting Self-Treatment Decisions Made by Jobs – He postponed surgery to remove a neuroendocrine tumor against his doctors advisement. Instead his controlling obsessions, including bazaar dietary habits led to self-treatment using alternative medicines. Had he chose to go through surgery 9 months earlier – it is likely the cancer would’ve been removed [as in other similar cases – Early removal of this type of cancerous tumor often cured the cancer]. His form of cancer was not as deadly or aggressive as the most common form.

Not until the cancer reached the late stage 9 months later did he agree to use conventional treatment to stop it from spreading. Unfortunately by this time the cancer had spread to other surrounding tissues. He also never quit his obsessive high fructose dietary habit after diagnosis. Even after being warned by his personal physician – the body would have a better chance of fighting cancer by adding more protein to the diet – THIS was the opinion of medical experts. Many believe Jobs would still be alive today if he had the surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy immediately after diagnosis. For whatever reason, Jobs believed alternative medicines was his best bet to beat cancer.

Later in his autobiography, it is mentioned he regretted the decision to self-treat his cancer.

Can location be a cancer causing factor?

I believe “unhealthy lifestyle factors which include environment increases the risk of  DNA gene string mutation and cancer cell growth and metastasis.”

State Cancer Statistics 2002 – 2017

State cancer statistics show an increasing and concerning rise in cancer cases over the last 17 years.  Note: Per Capita [population] as a percentage of state cancer cases have not been evaluated within this article.

States with highest cancer population diagnosis during year 2000  (California 113,200), Florida (88,100), Texas (76,100), NY (81,500), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,220,100

States with highest cancer diagnosis during year 2008  (California 156,530), Florida (101,920), Texas (96,320), NY (97,130), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,437,180.

States with highest cancer diagnosis during year 2017 – (California 176.140), Florida (124,740), Texas (116,200), NY (107,530), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,688,780.

“In 2017, there will be an estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases diagnosed and 600,920 cancer deaths in the US (American Cancer Society, 2017).”  Get All Cancer Stats Now.

Comparing 2009 – 2017 Pancreatic Diagnosis and Cancer Deaths

Pancreatic Cancer estimates in 2009 ~42,700 people will be diagnosed resulting in ~35,420 deaths will result making it the fourth deadliest cancer (American Cancer Society).

Pancreatic Cancer estimate in 2017 ~53,670 people will be diagnosed resulting in ~43,090 deaths will result making it the fourth deadliest cancer (American Cancer Society).  Deaths are evenly split between male and female. See Pancreas Statistics at a Glance

Pancreatic Cancer Risk factors,

“Factors that may increase your risk of pancreatic cancer include:
Chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), Diabetes, Family history of genetic syndromes that can increase cancer risk, including a BRCA2 gene mutation, Lynch syndrome and familial atypical mole-malignant melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome
Family history of pancreatic cancer, Smoking, Obesity, Older age, as most people are diagnosed after age 65.

A large study demonstrated that the combination of smoking, long-standing diabetes and a poor diet increases the risk of pancreatic cancer beyond the risk of any one of these factors alone (Mayo Clinic, 2017).”

Conclusion

It’s interesting to make comparisons of national cancer statistics to see if research and treatment progression has been made in reducing cancer cases nationally – Most specifically pancreatic cancer deaths.

Eight years later after my first article on this topic, I find it alarming – medical science has not identified the exact physiological cause of pancreatic cancer, or any other form of cancer for that matter. All types of cancer are on the rise. However medical research is narrowing down connected lifestyle, genetic, environment and other illness causing identifiers that increase risk.

Hawaii places 9th in the lowest producing cancer states. Hawaii is also known to have a consistent 73-80 degree days year round.

I believe, “anyone can improve the odds of activating cancer cells within the body – even if genetically predisposed. Simply by making better lifestyle and environmental choices.T

CONSUMER HEALTHY LIFESTYLE KNOWLEDGE IS POWERFUL – Apply Healthy Lifestyle Habits to Reduce Cancer Risk

  • The four states with the highest cancer cases increased significantly from 2002-2017.
  • Pancreatic Cancer is still the 4th deadliest cancer.
  • National Cancer cases are on the rise.
  • No one [male/female] is immune from pancreatic cancer, or any cancer for that matter.
  • Genetic predisposition [BRCA2 gene mutation]and Lynch syndrome increases cancer risk.
  • Prevent or Manage diabetes – it increases cancer risk.
  • A high body mole-count may be symptomatic of gene mutated cells. See a dermatologist or oncologist.
  • Bad cancer causing habits: alcohol, smoking, restricted-fad diet and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Avoid high fructose diet as research has exposed a likely cancer connection.
  • Balanced diet include all 3 macro-nutrients: proteins, carbs and fats to nourish the body.
  • If you have a dietary obsession with any food(s) or fads, seek behavioral therapy.
  • There are no conclusive studies that show pancreatic cancer is caused by any specific food type [high-fructose diets are suspect].
  • There are studies that show processed food chemicals have cancer causing agents.
  • Unhealthy relationships & environment alter hormone & Cellular DNA & function and cause physiological stress which can cultivate cancer cells.
  • Sedentary lifestyle often leads to obesity, diabetes and heart disease and known to increase cancer risk.
  • Low-impact aerobic exercise at minimum is needed to sustain healthy immune system and remove toxins that would otherwise nourish cancer cells.
  • Whole foods diet reduces processed food chemical intake and cancer risk.
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners, especially hyper-palatable sodas, syrup & coffee creamers.
  • Bad air environments have high Pro-Oxidants [toxic CO pollutants] – Dense city development with high smog levels is toxic to respiratory-immune systems.
  • Barbecue – high temp smoke and char temps – are known to be carcinogenic.
  • High-energy radiation from the sun, x-rays, gamma rays, alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons, can damage DNA and cause cancer.
  • Breast cancer tops Prostate Cancer in top 4 cancer states by ~135-190%.
  • Melanoma cancer cases is higher in top 4 cancer states, which are also sunshine states.
  • If cancer runs in family within any of the top 4 cancer states – location may be a factor.
  • If diagnosed with cancer the best odds of beating it – aggressive surgery regardless of stage of cancer – seek chemotherapy and radiotherapy upon medical recommendation.
  • 10 Lowest-Cancer Producing States in Order: Wyoming (1), Dist. of Columbia (2), Alaska (3), Vermont (4), North Dakota (5), South Dakota (6), Delaware (7), Rhode Island (8), Montana (9), Hawaii (10). Note: Per Capita [population] as a percentage of state cancer cases have not been evaluated within this article.

MOST RECENT PROSTATE CANCER MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

“One huge step forward was the use of radiation to reduce the impact of prostate cancer that spreads to bones. Another was the development of better diagnostics, including PSA tests, which mean that most men are diagnosed while their prostate cancer is still curable (Elster 2017).”

CONCLUSION

“Bottom line: There is no definite technique to prevent pancreas cancer. However, not smoking, exercising, and eating a proper diet is the best lifestyle choice for overall health (WebMD, 2017).”

Moderation in everything we do is key to healthy longevity, living life to the fullest and staying well.

Good Health to You and Your Family.

How did They Live Past 116

22 12 2018

Healthy relationships contribute to long life spans

Updated:  22 December 2018

How do average people live well past 100 years of age and significantly longer with a  95 year average lifespan? Does it have anything to do with genetics, environment, habit, diet, exercise or something more or absent thereof?

First let’s examine some of the longest living centurion biographies on record. And after reviewing these biographies, we’ll connect the dots to make a correlation to their longevity lifestyle secrets.

During the 19th – late 20th Century – interviews before death relevant to  lifestyle and culture to include biography and genealogy was not captured through a scientific or epidemiological process. Therefor I’ll render an opinion based on assumptions extracted from the limited amount of biographical data of deceased subjects; and references at the end of the article.

Super Centenarian – Deceased Subjects of Observation,

Jeanne Calment (21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997) she lived 122 years, 164 days, place of residence Arles, France.   Jeanne Louise Calment surpassed previous Guinness Book of Record holders as the longest living confirmed human.  It was said Jeanne smoked more than 2 cigarettes per day and after an operation in 1994 she weighed 99 pounds where she became dependent on a wheelchair for mobility.  She attributed her long life and youthful appearance to olive oil which she used religiously in her food and on her skin. Included within her diet she drank port wine and consumed ~2lbs of chocolate weekly.  In total she outlived 329 undisputedly-verified super centenarians

Sarah Knauss-Clark (24 September 1880 – 30 December 1999) she lived 119 years, 97 days, place of residence, Hollywood and Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Sarah had a career as an insurance office manager and upon her marriage to Abraham Lincoln Knauss (December 19, 1878 – March 1, 1965) she spent her time as a home maker and was a skilled seamstress. Mrs.  Knauss was known as an extraordinary woman that pushed the envelope of longevity.  It was said, the reason for her longevity stemmed from the fact she was a very tranquil person and nothing fazed her. Also it is known that she enjoyed life because she had her health and could do what she wanted. Her interests and foods included: viewing golf tournaments, needlepoint and nibbling on chocolate turtles, cashews and potato chips. Her only child Kathryn Knauss Sullivan (November 17, 1903 – January 21, 2005) lived to be 101 and was 96 at the time of her mother’s death.

Lucy Hannah (16 July 1875 – 21 March 1993) she lived 117 years, 248 days, place of residence Born in Linden, Alabama and died in Detroit.  She moved in the great migration to escape the racial tensions that were prominent of the times in the Deep South.  Her parents survived slavery for which it is noted they were whipped daily until their freedom and thereafter suffered from trauma as a result of the physical and mental scars. Lucy married John Hannah in 1901 and had 8 children together. Two of her children were still living at the time of her death. The two sisters lived to be 100 years of age. And Hannah’s mother lived to the age of 99.

Marie-Louise Meileur (29 August 1880 – 16 April 1998) She lived 117 years, 230 days, place of residence Kamouraska, Quebec, Canada. It is known that Marie was married twice and between the two marriages had 4 children with first husband Etienne Leclerc from 1900 and where he died in 1911.  And then the super centenarian had six other children through her second marriage with Hector Meileur whom she married in 1915 until his death in 1972.  She had 85 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 57 great-great- grandchildren and 4 (3 x great grandchildren). Marie’s death was the result of a blood clot.

Maria Capovilla (14 September 1889 – 27 August 2006) She lived 116 years, 347 days and was recognized by Guinness World Records during her reign as the world’s oldest living person ever in South America and the southern hemisphere in Guayaquil. Ecuador. It is also interesting to note she is also the oldest human that had a life span living within three centuries. Born as Maria Esther Heredia Lecaro; she married a military officer, Antonio Capovill after his first wife died.  They had five children together, three (Hilda, 81, Irma, 80 and Anibal 78) of which were at Maria’s side prior to death.  Antonio passed in 1949.  She had 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.  She enjoyed watching TV, reading and walked without the assistance of a cane, but helped by an aide prior to the day of her passing. She also never smoked or drank hard liquor.

Although home bound for the last two years of life, she shared her home with eldest daughter Hilda and son-in-law. In an interview her traditional view of men and women stated her dislike, about how women today are permitted to court men, rather than men courting women.

During 2006 near time of death Maria’s health took a turn for the worse.  She could no longer read, she nearly stopped talking and no longer could walk without the assistance of two people. Just prior to her death she was able to sit comfortably in her chair and fan herself. She died just 18 days before her 117th birthday. Cause of death Pneumonia.

Tane Ikai (18 January 1879 – 12 July 1995) She lived 116 years, 175 days, place of birth Kansei, Japan.  She is the only fully verified person within Asia to reach 116 years of age. She married at the age of 20 had 3 sons and one daughter. At the age of 38 she left her husband. At the age of 89 she entered a nursing home. At the age of 109 she had a stroke where she remained bed ridden in a hospital until her death.  Cause of death kidney failure.

Besse Cooper (26 August 1896 – 4 December 2012) 116 years and surpassing Elizabeth Bolden’s 116 years, 118 days. Besse Berry Brown-Cooper of Sullivan County, Tennessee was married to Luther Cooper and had 4 children and widowed after 39 years of marriage. Luther was 68 at the time of his death. Mrs. Cooper lived on her farm and moved into a nursing facility at the age of 105. Recently, Cooper reached her 116th birthday in August 2012, the second-oldest verified person from Tennessee and surpassing Elizabeth Bolden who died in December 2006, at the age of 116 years and 118 days. When asked what the secret to her super centurion lifespan, she stated, “minding my own business” working outdoors and avoiding most junk foods and ate lots of vegetables.  Occupation: retired teacher.   Cause of Death: Respiratory Failure.

Elizabeth Bolden (15 August 1890 – 11 December 2006) She lived 116 Years, 118 days and at the time of her death recognized by Guinness as the oldest living person.  She was born in Somerville, Tennessee, the daughter of freed slaves.  She had 7 children, only two of which were alive at the time of her death (Esther, 89 and Mamie 86). Elizabeth had 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great grandchildren and 220 (3 x great grandchildren) and an amazing 75 (4 x great grandchildren). And in her final days of life she resided within a Memphis Tennessee nursing facility.  Elizabeth also lived a life spanning within three centuries.

Maggie Barnes (6 March 1882 – 19 January 1998) She lived 115 years, 319 days, place of residence, Johnston County, North Carolina.  She was born to a slave and married a tenant farmer. Eleven of her children preceded her in death, while 4 of her other children survived her after death. Mrs. Barnes died of a complication from a minor foot infection.

Christian Mortensen (16 August 1882 – 25 April 1998) He lived 115 years, 252 days, last place of residence San Rafael, California. Born in a village near the city of Skanderborg, Denmark, he then settled in Chicago and worked various trades: tailor, milkman, and restaurateur and factory worker. He was married 10 years, had no children and never remarried. Retiring near Galveston Bay, Texas; 28 years later it was claimed at the age of 96 he rode his bike to the Aldersly Retirement Community in San Rafael where he stayed until his death. He’s the oldest living male to date.

When asked for advice on his long life; he stated, “stay away from alcohol; drink lots of water, keep a positive attitude, keep good friends and singing” will help you live a long time. His diet preferences were mainly a vegetarian diet and he also drank a lot of boiled water. He smoked cigars believing if in moderation, it was not unhealthy.

In order to find out how these 10 individuals lived so long – we’ll compare environment, lifestyle, diet, behaviors and habits with the online data available. In this way we may understand what common denominators may have contributed to their long life spans.

Centenarian interview statements revealed prior to death [in bold – represents a healthy habit or behavior of moderation], were claimed by each individual to contribute to their long lives spans.

Conclusion,

All but one of ten centenarians lived in a statistically low cancer state(s) [excluding those that lived outside of the United States]. And all but one of the 10 was male. Christian Mortensen lived in Texas 28 years and then moved to a California nursing home at the age of 96.  He lived ~48 years in a statistically high cancer state and where it appears he spent the majority of his first ~68 years of life in Skanderborg, Denmark.  He lived ~116 years of age beating all other fellow men in longevity.

It looks like all 10 of these individuals lived within large families; most were married and/or had large circles of various interactive social-family relationships. It also appears mobility, stress reduction and positive mood was important contributors to overall wellbeing. As far as their habits and diets – it appeared they moderated the good with a “little” bad.  For the most part, their diets appeared healthy and most consumed very little if any alcohol.

Recall, 9 out of 10 of these super centenarians where female.  It is a fact that women live longer than men. This has a lot to do with metabolism, genetics, diet, body weight, habits and lifestyle. What specifically separates men from women? Men are greatly driven by hormones (read importance of testosterone on men’s health, Ref #8) which tend to cause more risky behavior and mood-stress characteristics. Also when testosterone levels drop, or become unbalanced in men during the aging process, this change tends to have a significant impact on men’s health and longevity. Male hormone replacement therapy monitored by a physician can help with low testosterone production, which may help support vitality and longevity while reducing health risk.

These centenarians shows us they lived relatively balanced lifestyles. They were physically and mentally active throughout their life span; they enjoyed personal and social gatherings and relationships mostly within large circles of friends and family. And for those residing in the United States lived mostly within low statistical cancer states (Ref #11).

They lived purposeful and mobile lifestyles, had positive attitudes, maintained low levels of stress, had good sense of humor, enjoyed selfless endeavors and shared their life experiences and stories with others. They also lived life to the fullest and without the crutch of habitual vices and little need of medications.

“FDA Bans Hydrogenated Trans Fats”

14 11 2018

Be sure to eat healthy and get your daily walk exercise on. It does a body good.

Updated:  14 Nov 2018, Marc Woodard

In order to understand how unhealthy Trans Fats are it is necessary to first define and relate to them and how this unhealthy fat got into our food in the first place.  And why the FDA agrees it’s not fit for human consumption.

Hydrogenated Trans fats were invented in the 1890s.  What took the FDA so long to put a ban on the hydrogenation of vegetable oils?  And even with a ban does this keep Trans Fats out of our diet?

Much of the hydrogenated Trans Fat story has to do with low product cost and hyper palatable fat that addict consumers to purchase those products repeatedly. Which in turn generates huge profits for the food processing companies.  These basic facts explain the longevity of Trans Fats in the marketplace.

The FDA ban of trans fats occurred after decades of studying the effects of it on human health.

“Although saturated fat is the main dietary culprit that raises LDL (Low Density LipoProtein), added Trans Fat and dietary cholesterol also contribute significantly to increased LDL’s [which represent unhealthy blood chemistry and related cause to cardiovascular disease].  Trans fat can often be found in processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils such as vegetable shortenings, some margarines (especially margarines that are harder), crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, and baked goods (FDA 2017).”

In the past consumers sought low cost, tasty and convenient processed foods and praised the hydrogenation process because of cost and exceptional flavor. But now the FDA agrees with consumer safety advocates – banning this fat completely over the next few years would be best for consumer health and health care industry.

To learn why the FDA is now taking action it is necessary to define Trans Fats, hydrogenation, poly hydrogenated oil and how this man made fat causes disease.

Adding more hydrogen to oil is simply the process of man infusing more hydrogen atoms (hydrogenation) to a vegetable oil(s) mono-poly unsaturated fatty carbon molecule chain.  The vegetable oil than becomes a “Partially” or fully hydrogenated (fat saturated) “Trans Fat.”  i.e., Listed on food labels as Partial hydrogenated and/or Trans Fats are the same thing of varying atomic degree.

But not obvious to most consumers…  through hydrogenation the oil becomes a more solid Trans hard fat that’s very unhealthy for us.  That is vegetable oils are artificially hardened to achieve “firm” convenience soft spreads with long shelf life e.g., margarine, cooking oils and shortening.

To identify Trans Fats in food products, manufacturers list these values on ingredient labels.  Note the words Partially Hydrogenated soybean Oil (PHO) on margarine and butter labels below.  This is code for Trans Fats. You can find PHO listed as an ingredient in many snack, dessert foods, vegetable oils and even health supplemental products, etc.   And when you see 0g Trans Fats on the label, food manufacturers are allowed up to .5grams Trans Fats per serving and can list this value as zero while simultaneously displaying PHO.

The good news for consumers as previously stated, the FDA now requires food manufactures to follow more stringent Trans Fat label laws.  For instance if a food product has .5g Trans Fats or more, that value has to be listed on the label (FDA 2017).

This means all Trans Fats in foods must be identified.  Even if the words Trans Fat equals 0 grams, the food product is allowed up to .499grams per serving when PHO is listed.  Many don’t know Trans Fats are also in organic wholefoods.  Ever wonder how they get into animal and vegetable products?

Live stock graze on vegetation which contain a certain amount of poly unsaturated oil in them.  Through animal grazing PHO’s (Poly Unsaturated Oil) are digested and some of this oil is stored in saturated fat cells.  Hence all products have varying amounts of naturally stored PHO or Trans Fats in them.  Just like humans.

Unlike organic dietary fats, hydrogenated Trans fats are not essential to the diet and significantly increase health risk when consuming too many of them.

I know conscientious consumers remove animal fat before eating a steak, or  ladle the fat from broth to reduce fat intake calories.  This is easy to do because it is easily seen.  However Tran’s fats blend into processed baked and convenience foods and can’t be seen or removed.  This is why it’s important to understand where Trans Fats come from and how to identify them in the foods eaten daily.   This knowledge becomes even more important if you now suffer from obesity, diabetes or heart disease.

Over consumption of fatty foods in general is bad.  But far worse when too many deceptive Trans-fats are mixed into baked goods.

In the past hydrogenation of cooking oils was used excessively by food industries until it was determined Tran’s fats were worse for you than natural occurring organic fats.  Early 2006, companies began removing the Trans fat hydrogenation processes from foods and labeling “0” amounts of Trans Fats as required by the FDA.  But as you now know “0” does not mean “0 Trans Fats and there a connection to organic food PHO chemistry.

In 2015 the “U.S. Food and Drug Administration finalized its determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not “generally recognized as safe” or GRAS for use in human food.  Food manufacturers will have three years to remove PHOs from products (FDA 2015).”

Even through the FDA recently determined Trans Fats are not safe for humans the end to manmade Trans Fats won’t end until 2017-18…  this will not ban all Trans Fats from all foods because of the natural occurring PHO found in livestock and plants.  But food manufacturers will be required to continue listing Trans Fats, mono-poly and saturated fat values.

Is this a win for everyone?  I guess it depends on individual and company perspective.

For the health conscious consumer and those suffering from obesity, diabetes and other related illness and disease these changes could be of great dietary health benefit.  For those on fixed and low incomes it may cost more and limit choice of healthy foods in the marketplace.  For a manufacturer it may increase the cost of doing business.  Unfortunately his increase in cost is usually passed onto the consumer.

There will be winners and losers no matter how you look at this thing.

Disease Scientifically Linked to Genetic Engineered Food Crops

22 09 2018

Fast food’s consumed likely contain GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms)

Updated:  22 September 2018

I remember long ago our family would plant hundreds of vegetable seeds in mid May on the family farm.  This annual planting would produce a multitude of organic vegetables for meals.

Also one of our main crops (pumpkins) would be sold at the local market in October.

What we didn’t sell or consume would then be canned as a provisional food source that would last until next years crop was harvested. Times have definitely changed from when I grew up.

For as long as I can remember the foods farmed by American families were the most nutritious and healthiest throughout the world.  However, that distinguished honor is no longer the case.  A major factor for the decline of nutrition within the food industry has to do with escalating costs of farming foods-to-table.  This has led to farming foods in labs before it hits the shelf.

Most consumers don’t know food industry’s are made up of 8-10 major food chain monopolies.  But for the sake of simplicity I’m going to use a few examples of how  reengineering of lab farmed foods is harming health.  In this way it is easier to understand why it’s so hard for consumers to remove harmful foods from the diet… especially when labels don’t disclose GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) information. Monsanto has been producing man made GMO crop seeds and chemical food sweeteners (e.g., Aspartame brands: NutraSweet, Spoonful and Equal-Measure) for some time now.

Artificial Sweeteners in Nearly all non-concentrate.

Many food products consumed from the local grocery store now contain more engineered ingredients than one can imagine.  The likes of Procter & Gamble (P&G) foods corporation is one of the largest producers of products that are petroleum based and comprised of Genetically Modified (GM) crops produced from GMO’s seeds resistant to herbicides and pesticides as was the case in the popular Pringles potato chip product.

Not so long ago, some 800,000 cans of Pringles potato chips had been recalled in Japan because the potatoes used to make the chips had the “gene-altered NewLeafPlus and NewLeaf Y components developed by Monsanto in the vegetables DNA!  This gene altered potato is approved for consumption in the United States but not in Japan!  So one has to wonder, why is the gene altered potato still sold within American markets and not the Japanese markets?  And should this ban mean something to the American people?  I think it should and the proof is in what P&G did next.

They sold its Pringles business to the Diamond Foods Snack Company for $2.35b in 2011.  Then in 2012 the Diamond deal fell apart and the Kellogg Company bought Pringles for $2.7b in cash. Thereafter P&G decided to focus more on its house hold cleaners and beauty products. These products have know carcinogenic ingredients [i.e., household cleaners, pet foods, cosmetics and personal care products].

Could it be that P&G and Diamond Foods Snack Company’s didn’t want the consumer backlash? Could it be that the new shareholder coalition “Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility” and GMO health risk connection is making sense to the 40 plus food companies [i.e., Safeway, Sysco, Whole Foods, Kellogg, Kraft, Heinz, Hershey’s, Starbucks, etc.]. The shareholder coalition message to these companies reports how Monsanto and GE foods are bad for Investors. Could these decisions to bail out have anything to do with  consumer health and liability risk.

GMO Corporations have been criticized for funding anti-labeling attempts to prevent disclosure laws from becoming public knowledge, while also working to weaken Europe’s laws regarding toxins in household products. And now these messages have spread to the largest economies in the world!

California field ready to plant.

California consumer advocates continue to supports mandatory GMO labeling as attempted during a Ballot initiative in 2012.  Over 80% of polls support GMO labeling for consumers.  Since California is the 8th largest economy in the world if the initiative passed it would have had a dramatic effect on changing consumer packaging and ingredient decisions nation-wide.

“The California Senate rejected on Wednesday a bill that would require labels on genetically-engineered foods. This is the second time in two years that labeling legislation has fallen short in the most populous and agriculturally-productive state.” [RT.com, May 31, 2014]

“Now Colorado and Oregon have ballot measure out to the voters to determine if their states will support the labeling of GMO’s on food ingredients.” [MirrorAthlete, 23 Oct, 2014]

“While state-level initiatives continue, other groups are focusing their attention on passing labeling legislation at the national level. Among them is the Just Label It (JLI) campaign, a national coalition of more than 600 diverse organizations working for the mandatory federal labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods (JustLabelIt.org 2018). In time I believe GE labeling laws will become a mandatory federal law.

It’s interesting to note Monsanto and Procter & Gamble have the same institutional corporate owners.  The top institutional owner of P&G foods is “Warren Buffett’s” Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., holdings, which owns ~$4.9b in P&G stock (NYSE: PG).  Proctor and Gamble current revenues (ttm) are ~$83.68b.  Also Bill Gates invested and purchased 500,000 shares of Monsanto Stock (NYSE: MON) and supported the use of GM crop technology [data reviewed – Oct 2014]. I’m not sure about their positions to date.

It’s very difficult to make change to consumer product laws when windfall profits for investors, employee jobs, market economies and corporate holdings are at stake.

Regardless – No matter how much money these moguls have and what interests they control – They can’t hide the animal studies that tell consumers truths about GMO’s and potential impact on human health. Animal studies show how Monsanto’s GMO corn is likely linked to organ damage and Aspartame as a cause of diabetes and obesity.

Food carts – Serve some of the most unhealthy foods one could consume.

There are reported toxicity reactions divided by the estimated reporting rate and where scientific studies corroborate that chronic aspartame ingestion and health damage has affected well over one million consumers in the U.S.   This is not so hard to fathom especially when you think of all the sodas and processed foods consumed on an annual basis.  Artificial lab farmed sweeteners is one of the primary causes of diabetes and “near” childhood obesity epidemic in this country.

It is also not well known by consumers, Aspartame “Monsanto’s artificial sweetener” is 200 times sweeter than sugar per equivalent volume.  And is also one of the most taste altering addictions that stimulaties consumers taste preference for rich high fat calorie foods.  Science shows us Aspartame products are also responsible for Formaldehyde poisoning!  How’s that?  Aspartame is an unstable chemical when stored (warehousing) too long in warm temperatures, the chemical properties of the artificial sweetener within soda cans converts to another type of dangerous chemical.

Monsanto has contributed greatly to changing our entire food chain by genetically altering many food crops DNA molecular structure – through GMO technology and super sweetening of foods.

Genetically modified crops have never been an integral part of the human or animal diet prior to the mid-latter 20th century.  The health consequences for those who over consume GM crop products are currently unknown.  Various scientific animal studies reveal to us that GM livestock feed and processed food ingredients correlate a clear negative impact on the function of the kidneys and liver.  It is more important than ever that more research focuses on the toxicity and mutation GM crop varieties may have on vital organs and DNA.

Looking at Genetically Modified (GM) Crops a Little Closer.

GM lab farmed products is an engineered process where a recombinant (genetic recombination) technology uses DNA molecules from different sources to combine and create a new set of genes within crop seeds for example.  This is done to make crops more resistant to decay, insects, chemical fertilizers, etc.  In this way farmers can mass produce volumes of what appears to be healthy food for consumer markets using less chemical sprays and fertilizers.

It’s not just the GMO corn and potatoes that the consumers should be aware of when purchasing product within the marketplace.  For example, corn is not only available off the husk, but also comes canned, as cooking oil, or processed corn starch, etc. Products such as cereals and baked snacks (as in seen in our Pringles example) are processed from the same crops which likely have artificial sweetener additives as well!  Let’s not forget about the livestock being fattened up by GM corn feed.  Now you can see how our food and personal use products have been reengineered and connection to health problems.

Hyper-Sweetened foods contribute to disease

Is it any wonder “Corporate controlled and protected artificial sweetener testing continues at Monsanto, torturing the ethics of academic medicine?” [Prevailing Winds, Issue 1, 1995].   They do so without fear of retribution because the FDA, “our consumer protection agency” turns a blind eye by accepting these corporate studies as safe consumer products.  [US Congressional Record, Volume 131, No. 106, August 1, 1985, pages S10826-S10827]

Why does this type of regulatory protection continue?  I believe it has a lot to do with corporate, institutional and governmental greed, power and control.  This marketplace dynamic is contributing to higher health care costs and more obese children and adult health problems than any other time in history.

I’ve listed the Top GM Food Crops that likely contain GM DNA.  If you want to know more about artificial sweeteners and GMO crops, simply see the referenced links below.

Corn – Monsanto revealed 50% of American sweet farm growers now use GMO seeds that have been modified to create its own insecticide.  Mice studies show when fed with GMO corn, offspring are smaller and there were fertility problems.

Tomatoes – GM tomato seeds prevent the vegetable from easily rotting and have been specifically engineered for longer shelf life.  Some mice fed these tomatoes after a couple of weeks died.

Dairy Products – Monsanto has created a recombinant (genetically modified) bovine growth hormone that’s injected into 22% of our U.S. dairy cows to increase insulin growth factor (IGF-1).  It is warned by scientists that increase in IGF-1 in humans have been associated with colon and breast cancer.

Potatoes – Mice fed potatoes with Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki Cry 1 had toxins in their bodies.  Although studies show stability of the Cry1 toxin in the mouse gut, there have been studies that show just the opposite results.

Peas – A gene from kidney beans was inserted into the DNA of peas to create a protein that functions as a pesticide.  This GM crop has been found to cause immune responses in mice.  However, it is not known the impacts on human consumption.

Rice – South East Asia’s rice is now GM to contain high levels of vitamin A.  It is not known if rice production in the U.S. in now GM rice varieties with human protein genes to help thwart infant diarrhea in 3rd world countries.  Unknown allergic reactions and other mutated gene transfers are now of a serious public health and environmental concerned as reported by an online journal, China Daily.

Soy – Products that are manufactured from the soy bean now have the GE resistive herbicide DNA structure within various foods (Soy products: flour, tofu, beverages, oil, pastries and baked products).  Hamsters that were fed GE soy products resulted in infertility and a high mortality rate.

Cotton – Cotton has been GM to resist pesticides like corn and soy.  Cotton is considered food because cooking oil can be extracted from the seeds and consumed.  Thousands of Indian farmers suffered severe rashes upon exposure to Chinese agricultural methods in order to kill the cotton bollworm.

Does organic without certification really mean organic?

Rapeseed – Canola is made from the edible Canadian Rapeseed crop; which most are familiar as a popular processed cooking oil and margarine.  Honey can also be produced from GM rapeseed.  As much as 1/3 of all pollen present in Canadian honey may likely be GM pollen.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact our health.

Papaya – Papaya crops produced in Hawaii was modified in 1999 to be virus-resistant.  Also, Monsanto provided Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India the GM technology to further develop a resistant ring spot virus papaya for India.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact health.

As consumers need more to worry about…  Research is also beginning to show links to Morgellon’s Disease correlated with GM recombinant foods.

This disease a few years back was a mystery, or something one conjured up in the head.  But the opposite is being shown to be the case.  Patients have presented strange skin irritations, skin anomalies and most specifically a mysterious tiny blue, red and black fiber growth that protrudes from an itchy skin lesion on areas of the body and where GM foods are concentrated, sold and consumed.  There appears to be a direct correlation with these fiber samples that are not of human DNA origins, but in fact when comparing these fiber samples, Ahmed Kilani (researcher) found they belonged to a fungus.  Then it was found by Vitaly Citovsky (biochemist) and determined that these fibers contained a substance called “Agro bacterium.”  This substance is used commercially to produce genetically-modified plant foods!

For now, the lack of national labeling requirements makes it hard to know which foods have GM ingredients.  You’re also now aware ~10 of our major farmed food staples may be partially or fully produced from GM seeds.  And other products such as dairy, fish, meats and processed snack foods could have GM ingredients.

Regardless of organic certification – local farmed foods are typically better than most store bought foods outside of local farms.

Recommendation – If you currently have immune, or other health, illness or disease issues, or are concerned about GM foods – consume more organic foods.  The best prevention to mitigate possible health risks from GM foods is to shop as organic as possible and purchase more foods labeled “certified organic.”

Be sure to vote for GMO food labeling disclosure laws when it gets on your states ballots as it is your right to know what your consuming!
