Enjoy Holiday Meals Without Weight Gain or Guilt

I can’t believe how fast the end of year Holidays roll upon us.  And for some it can be a stressful time.  Especially if you have a hard time managing body weight.

I have an 8-Tip Holiday Meal Plan that may alleviate fears of eating your favorite traditional Holiday meals and without gaining weight.

These tips can help many resist the temptation to overeat during this time of year.  I’m sharing a “no weight gain strategy.”  This strategy has helped past clients stay on weight loss target.  Admittedly most didn’t lose weight… however most didn’t gain any either.  And some even shed a few pounds by applying all 8 tips below.

Back History on the 8-Tip Holiday Meal Plan – I was asked during a client consult if I could create a work around food strategy.  One that allowed someone to eat favorite foods during the Holidays without derailing a current weight loss plan.

Of course I told the young lady there’s always a risk of falling back into a bad food habit when overeating hyper-palatable foods.  But for this individual it was worth the risk to modify the current diet plan.  That is to enjoy a traditional Christmas meal with family and not fear losing control over foods and body weight.  Prior to this request she had avoided all Holiday meals in fear of weight gain.  And now doesn’t want to avoid them any more.  After applying the 8 tip program she acknowledged the following results.  There was no weight gain and she continued to stay on weight loss target for the following Year.

For some, it’s almost as if we have to harden the body for the rigors of war because of all the food temptations in front of us.  The smells and tastes are enough to drive anyone crazy and want to go on a food binge.

The worse part of consuming too many calories in a day, as we age our body’s metabolisms become less efficient at processing the excess.  Instead the metabolism gets very efficient at storing body fat weight.  It is also true during the Holidays most have a tendency to over indulge and then continue this pattern the following Year.

I also understand some of you have had tremendous success in melting the pounds away last year as you stuck to your new year’s weight loss resolution commitment.

For those still struggling to lose weight don’t give up!  I’m sharing the same client tips I know can work for you.  And quite possibly may be habit changing enough to incorporate into your current weight loss program.

However the tips alone may not be enough to meet your ultimate weight loss goal.  Whereas ill-health conditions warrant medical doctor advisement prior to changing a daily routine.  The point being these food strategy tips will not help if you are in poor health, have substance abuse problems, personality disorder, e.g., obsessive compulsive tendencies, etc., and/or carry excessive body weight and grossly obese.  Moving on…

A Time to Celebrate With Family

I’m no different than anyone else with regard to foods during the Holidays.   I’m greatly tempted to eat more than I need.  However, awareness of our food habit weaknesses combined with a food plan strategy is the best deterrent to minimize an uptick in body fat weight during the Holiday season.

The fact is as you age the body simply doesn’t require the excess calories it once needed during the developmental and active adult years.  This does not mean you have to give up all your favorite foods.   For the most part you can consume a selection of your choosing.  Your only real requirements are to follow the satiety suggestions below, reduce over processed food consumption and don’t eat or drink your calories after 8pm.  And participate in some form of low stress aerobic exercise activity daily [i.e., walking, biking, hiking, jogging, dancing, yard work, rowing, cross country ski, swimming, etc.].

Since everyone’s metabolism is different due to age, sex, health and medical condition, genetics, etc.,  I can’t predict or provide a one fit “hold the body weight line” solution that will work for everyone.  Especially when I know the program below was designed and worked for a few client types that wanted to indulge during the Holidays without experiencing weight gain.

However I do know these tips are worth sharing because they can be advantageous for you.  Especially if your the type of individual that has the will power to continue a healthy habit food course after partaking in an infrequent celebration or Holiday meal.

Can this 8-Tip Holiday Meal Plan strategy work long term?  Yes I believe it can for certain individuals.  But determining each individuals commitment to a successful weight loss goal and plan is best accomplished through 1:1 consulting services where information sharing is a two-way street and the program is relative to individual needs and wants.

For those of you that are disciplined enough to pace yourself and turn off the feeding frenzy… My hats off to you!  You have will power most of us can only dream about.  For others, to help reduce calorie consumption during the Holidays my 8 Tip Holiday Meal Plan may be of consequence.

If you take this 8 Tip Holiday Meal Plan to heart and apply parts of it or the whole, it can work short and possibly long term.

Tip#1Never!  I repeat Never!  Go to your mother, mother-in-laws, or Grandmothers home for Holiday meals hungry!

The habit of starving ourselves in preparedness for the Holiday meal seems to be ingrained within the American spirit and culture.  I know my family like so many others during the Holidays have repeated this ritual.  It’s no wonder we can’t stop ourselves.  Before you know it, we’re all lying around like beached whales on a lido deck with “Hot… Hot… Hot,” playing in the background.  So, it stands to reason, you must eat a normal meal not less than 2-3 hours before you go over for a Holiday meal.

The way our digestion system processes food after a meal, the stomach will not be empty for the next 4-6 hours depending on metabolism.  This digestive function varies with each one of us.

I don’t suggest being selective when choosing Holiday foods.  Just serve the foods you want to eat and don’t over load your plate.  The point is when you get to the table you won’t be as hungry or want to eat as much.

Tip#2Never!  I repeat Never!  Drink alcohol prior to going into the meal.

You don’t drink and drive do you?  Well, what makes you think you could drink and consume without injury to your body prior to sitting for the meal?  Although I’m being facetious, I’m also serious in the way I want to make my point.  Alcohol is a depressant, pain killer, relaxant, taste intensifier and social inhibitor.  The point is easy to understand here, eat and drink like Vikings… No pain equates to much inhibited calorie gain!

Limit yourself to two 8oz glasses of cheer after the meal (your choice).  Remember alcohol also contains calories that add up fast.

Tip#3Drink plenty of water throughout the day when attending Holiday meals.

Water is a natural solvent, absorbs well in the stomach and intestinal lining assisting the body’s digestive system to process food intake more efficiently and that means less calories stored as fat.  Plus, water will make you feel full faster and has no calories.

Tip#4Do not stay at the dinner table after eating.

This is where most of us fall prey to over eating indulgences.  It is very difficult to resist picking at the Holiday turkey, cranberry, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, pies, olives, sipping on Champaign…  “Ohhhhhh the dressing and gravy… Give me a break!  I’m dying here.  I think I just made myself hungry.”

See how hard this is and I’m supposed to be giving you advice.  Look, I never said I wasn’t human, or this would be easy.  More so the reason to have a pre-meal battle plan strategy that moves one away from the table and out of the kitchen after the meal.

Tip 5#Take your first serving.  After you consume it wait 20 minutes before you think about seconds.

Take at least 20 minutes and enjoy the meal.  “Seconds is not recommended.”  This will be the hardest part of the meal plan.   It takes your brain approximately this much time to register whether you’ve eaten enough or not.

Focus on satiety not a feeling of fullness.  But if you do decide you can’t resist a second helping focus on a favorite serving that doesn’t take up more than 1/2 the plate diameter.  And no piling food on the plate.   Focus on 50% less than what you’d normally put on the plate for 1st’s and 2nd’s.

Tip#6Never!  I repeat Never!  Eat dessert after you’ve eaten your meal.

This will only add insult to injury.  Your body simply is not designed to handle this mass blood sugar spike without consequence, especially if you’ve achieved satiety after eating the main meal.  Wait 1 hour to see how your body processes the feeling of what you ate.  If you experience a feeling of satiety and not overfull after a period of time then do enjoy some dessert.  While eating dessert take your time to gage feeling of gut comfort. But if you begin to experience the feeling of near full, back off and leave the remaining portion of dessert.

Tip#7 Never!  I repeat never!  Take home left over’s.

This can set you up for failure early on into the New Year.  Simply by continuing to eat these foods addicts some to a similar eating pattern for months.  And thereafter another 10 pounds can be added quickly.

Walk where ever you find yourselves during the Holidays.

Tip#8Don’t quit your exercise program during the Holidays.

This is very important!  When you consume excess calories on “any day,” you will need to mobilize the body to remove the unspent fat fuel.  I highly recommend a daily walking program, or other Low-Impact aerobic activity at least 30 minutes daily.

You’ve now learned how it’s possible to embrace Holiday foods that don’t compromise the meal experience or add guilt.  And best of all when applied with conviction you won’t gain weight.  You may be surprised and even lose a little.

Diabetes Dietary GI (Glycemic Index) and Weight Loss

A good way to manage diabetes and weight loss is to understand the connection between carbohydrates and effects on blood sugar levels.  Learn how to apply the Glycemic Index (GI), choose healthier foods and maintain blood sugar at safe levels while losing weight.

This is an index that ranks carbohydrate foods on a scale of 0-100.  Zero being foods low in absorbable blood sugar and 100 the highest absorbable sugars from foods.

The higher the GI value of foods the higher the blood glucose level in the body.  When blood sugar levels increase from foods consumed the body produces more insulin to store it until the energy fuel is needed to get work done.  When blood glucos levels are sustained over ~105-110 for a period of time it often results in unwanted weight gain and for others disease.  The food groups listed below are determined by many in the health and dietary profession as healthier food choices for diabetics.  Because they are low absorbable sugar foods they are slower to digest and absorbed into the blood.  This helps to lower and maintain blood sugar levels.

I wrote a previous article “Diabetes a Serious Disease.” Click on the link to learn more on topic.  In short, diabetes is defined and diagnosed as type 1 or 2.  Whereas insulin function is critical to maintain blood sugar levels and metabolic receptors use it to nourish and fuel body movement.  When either of these systems break or become less efficient at utilizing blood sugar then risk of disease, or aggravation or worsening of pre-existing ill-health condition may occur.

Once diagnosed as a diabetic it is wise to consume lower absorbable carbohydrate foods.  This choice will help to mitigate damage to nerves,  blood vessels and alleviate diabetic nerve pain.  While reducing excess body fat known to contribute to cardiovascular and circulatory disease.

It is the complex carbohydrates “e.g., whole foods multi-grains and fibrous fruits and vegetables” that also delay hunger pains and support weight loss while alleviating diabetic symptoms.

However don’t be fooled in believing low glycemic foods alone will fully address overweight problems.   Although simple and complex carbohydrates are necessary in the diet, it is the quantity, or total calories consumed in a day that cause body weight to increase.   Eating too much of anything, including healthy foods while living a sedentary lifestyle can lead to any number of health problems.  Not addressed in this article are other factors that may contribute, or lead to diabetes and obesity.  Such as hormonal, immunological and genetic factors.  Maintaining a healthy diet is part of the health equation, but only a medical specialist can determine through diagnosis if other treatment or prescription is necessary to achieve your healthy lifestyle goals.

Below I provide a popular listing of low sugar foods good for overall health and weight management.  The American Diabetes and American Dietetic Associations have not yet adapted the GI concept.  It appears this has more to do with lack of empirical evidence required of each food listed and resulting degree of benefit to a diabetic patient.

If you suspect your diabetic or have long term overweight or obesity challenges, I highly recommend you request a referral of your primary care physician to see an endocrinologist, diabetic or metabolic specialist.  Then request relative laboratory tests to ensure your blood sugars and metabolism are functioning at safe levels.   Also, discuss managing your diet through healthier food choice by using the Glycemic Food Index (GI) as a safe guide to identify low absorbable sugar foods.  Prior to physician visit select the foods you prefer from the index.  Then consult with the doctor in determining if those choices are right for you.  For a full GI listing ask your doctor, use an Internet search engine, or visit your local book store.  Below represents the short lists.

Lower Glycemic Food Index (GI).   Sugar alcohols (Sorbitol, Maltitol) Soy drinks, milk, yoghurt, Sweet potatoes, yams, vegetables, Fruits – plums, pears, peaches, grapes, grapefruit, cherries, bananas, apples, avocados, fresh juices.  Dried beans, peas, lentils.  Spaghetti, pasta, Basmati rice, Whole grain breads and pita Nuts and seeds.

Higher Glycemic Food Index (GI) Quicker Acting Carbohydrates Ice cream (low-fat), frozen yogurt.  White bread, doughnuts, croissants, rice cakes, bagels.  White potatoes, corn, white rice.  Low fiber cereals – Cornflakes, RiceKrispies, Fruit loops, etc.  Pineapple, cantaloupe, watermelon, ripe bananas.  Soda, sugar sweetened sports and energy drinks.  Candy, sugar.

Since I’m not one to follow the letter of the dietary law, I do eat some high absorbable sugar foods in moderation.  But mostly I consume foods listed in the lower GI.  It’s not because I’m a diabetic, I just prefer those foods.  If you get into the habit of choosing healthier foods, after about 2 weeks you’ll begin to naturally crave them.

It is the hyper-palatable, or over sweetened processed foods by food engineers and unhealthy alcohol and mixed drink habits that addict us to the high absorbable sugar products.   Breaking the simple carbohydrate  food habit by learning how to moderate it in the diet is a challenge for some.  For others, not so much.  Give a healthier food choice a try and see if you can begin a new and healthier dietary habit.  If it works for you, you’ll feel better, have more energy, lose weight without hunger pains and mobility and fitness levels will increase.  And just maybe you’ll be less dependent on some medications and want to do more daily exercise.

As a side note…  never forego taking prescribed medications even if you improve diet and have significant weight loss and relief of diabetic symptoms .  Follow all doctor treatment and prescription advise.   Only a doctor can determine if removal of certain meds is right for you.

Candida Free

Candida is no longer the diagnostic mystery and treatment challenge it once was in the past. But if you suspect you have it or suffer from Candida, in order to relate and apply appropriate treatment, it first must be defined.

Wikipedia and other on-line dictionaries alike define candida as “a genus of yeasts and is the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide.” Whereas gut bacterial imbalance occur and infectious fungi culminate with potential to cause any number of illness and disease within the body. Thankfully many yeast and bacteria species are harmless commensals [i.e., different organisms that co-exist without harm or benefit to the other].

And where these microorganism colonies are often referred to as endosymbionts [i.e., microorganisms or bacteria that live in cells or body]; or gut flora [gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota].

When mucosal barriers are disrupted and produce mucous: e.g., inflammation of digestive, genital…vaginal tissue, urinary tracts and mouth; or immune system becomes compromised health risk increases.

Mucosal “Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts that belong to the genus Candida. ‘There are over 20 species of Candida yeasts that can cause infection in humans, the most common of which is Candida albicans. Candida yeasts normally live on the skin and mucous membranes without causing infection; however, overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop. Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected. (CDC 2015)”

When Candida yeast microorganisms overwhelm our immune system it is likely the result of an alkaline environment caused by an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the gut. This often leads to overgrowth of a fungal colony species that can inflame and infect tissue at its origin, or spread somewhere else in the body, or infect others.

For example, when the fungal infection of thrush overgrows on the mouth, tongue or throat the slightly raised patches on the mucous membrane and beneath it are usually raw and bleeding.

Thrush is defined as “Oral thrush — also called oral candidiasis (kan-dih-DIE-uh-sis) — is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth. ‘Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. Sometimes oral thrush may spread to the roof of your mouth, your gums or tonsils, or the back of your throat (Mayo Clinic 2016).”

Even a newborn can get the disease if the mother had a vaginal yeast infection during delivery. Since newborns have an imperfect and immature balance of bacteria; and elderly with suppressed immune systems and medical conditions are more susceptible to infection of tissue.

Although not typically contagious between toddlers, if a child with thrush has put a toy in mouth and another shares that toy in the same way, then the risk is higher of contracting the disease. Or if an adult handles dentures for example. Whereas that object is handled by someone else and put into their mouth.  (WebMD 2014).  Or you share a toothbrush or drink out of the same cup, etc.

If the Candida albican yeast overtakes the bacteria balance of the stomach and small intestines and then becomes present in the large intestines, this is a sign your system is fighting a battle it can’t win unless something changes. If lifestyle change and treatment course are not applied at some point systemic bodily infection may occur. And when the immune system is suppressed or in a weakened state any number of ill-health condition(s) may manifest.

Below are 18 illness and disease risks with connection to increased Candida yeast through unhealthy bacterial gut balance and increased fungi growth preceded by inflammation and infection.

“1. Acne or psoriasis 2. Allergies 3. Diabetes 4. Digestive disorders that cause gas, bloating, colitis or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) 5. Ear infections 6. Emotional upsets and depression 7. Energy imbalances or insomnia 8. Hormonal problems 9. Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) 10. Hypoglycemia 11. Hypothyroidism 12. Lung problems 13. Obesity 14. Pollen allergies 15. Reproductive Organ Disorders 16. Sensitivities to foods, chemicals, and/or molds 17. Susceptibility to viruses, bacteria, and other infections. 18. Simply by examining one of these diseases in a study, it is possible to see how a fungi infection starting in the gut could cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), or any other ill-health condition. This is explained by Professor Maureen Hanson, of molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y.

She states, “Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have a different profile of bacterial species in their gut microbiome than healthy individuals,” “In the small study, she and her colleagues found that people with chronic fatigue syndrome had less diversity or different types of bacteria, compared to healthy people without chronic fatigue syndrome. People with chronic fatigue syndrome also had more species of bacteria that promote inflammation and fewer bacteria that dampen inflammation, the researchers found (Doheny 2015).”

Professor Hanson describes balance of certain bacterial species is essential at keeping inflammatory and anti-inflammatory bacterial colonies and infectious fungi concentration under control. And one way to do this is by adding probiotics to the daily diet. Normalizing and sustaining an acidic gut environment helps to keep candida yeast at bay.

Bacterial Gut Disease Connected to Engineered Crop Foods

As one day sets a new one begins. How will you begin a healthy lifestyle plan?

Did you know that your digestive system is at risk of illness, disease and autoimmune disorders when your bacterial colonies are out of balance?

When the good bacteria are overridden by the bad ones, they override the good and begin to produce toxins and destroy tissue by feeding on it. The good bacteria is also known as probiotics. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that live in the gut and intestines and act to crowd out unfavorable pathogens, such as yeasts and toxic bacteria that may otherwise cause ill-health. Probiotics are naturally found in the body. You can also find them in foods and supplements.

Good eats are okay for infrequent indulgences. But to do so daily will reap havoc on the intestinal gut system.

“Our lower intestine requires at least 85% of friendly bacterial colonies to fight off micro-organisms like E. coli and salmonella.” “Poor eating habits, chlorinated drinking water, stress, use of antibiotics, medical treatments can destroy the gastrointestinal micro flora and allow harmful bacteria to multiply. Thus, make the body susceptible to yeast and bacterial infection and other disorders including gas, cramping, or diarrhea (Gupta 2009).” Our colon can maintain health with a 15% balance of bad bacteria. However most people have these percentages reversed.

Within developing countries resistive bacteria to anti-biotics appears to be evolving through engineered foods. Big agriculture now produces most of our food crops and livestock feed from GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) seed. And those seeds are DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) engineered to produce crops that kill pests and thrive through a deluge of chemical spray that otherwise kill everything else around it.

Whereas the DNA has been modified to produce perfect fruit and vegetables with little sign of imperfection. And at some molecular and insidious level appear to be incompatible with our DNA and gut bacterial balance. The focus here is to examine how GMO foods may have an overall negative effect on bacterial gut and intestinal health. And how our bodies are less resistive to bad bacteria causing ill-health problems.

It is important to understand how GMO food and anti-biotic treatment relates to gut and intestinal health.

When our immune systems become weak, or ravaged with infection often patients use, or request anti-biotics for the wrong pathogenic problem. Or patients save them from a previous prescription to self-treat without doctor approval. In these cases the patient doesn’t understand how improper use of antibiotics may harm them.

For example, if you have a virus i.e., cold, flu, sore throat, bronchitis, and other sinus and ear infection, we often request anti-biotic medicine from a doctor. But treating a virus with an anti-biotic may cause more harm than good.  Overuse of the drug is known to cause a resistance to them; thereby rendering an ineffective fight against infection.

Talk to your doctor about the differences between virus vs. bacterial illness and disease and proper drug treatment options. The point here, don’t take anti-biotics unless you need them.

Some of the foods you consume have modified DNA resistant bacterial organisms that appear to cause resistance to anti-biotic drugs. And when taking antibiotics unnecessarily increases bacterial bug resistance to the medication. And if you ever need a lifesaving anti-biotic, that super bug may be immune to it.

Epidemiological medical evidence shows increasing evidence of resistance to antibiotic treatment in developed countries. The common cause denominator? Big-Ag within developed countries use GMO crop seeds sprayed with thousands of tons of insecticides and herbicides annually which are absorbed into the crops.  Then sold within the marketplace. “Virtually every processed food you encounter at your local supermarket that does not bear the 100% USDA “Certified Organic” label is likely to contain at least one GE [Genetically Engineered] component. If it does not say “100% USDA Organic” on the label, for example, if it says just “organic” or “made with Organic,” it is highly likely it contains GMO product (Haug 2011).  IMG_20130405_175235

GMO seeds produce large crop yields, including crops not fit for human consumption but used to feed livestock and 3rd world countries. The livestock grass, corn and grain feed are also chemically treated and absorbed into livestock through consumption and passed into humans that consume them. These GE foods appear to have an accumulative ill-health effect on the gut and intestinal health, aside from causing immune systems to become resistant to anti-biotics.

Also there is another potential risk associated with GMO crops. Whereas national crop seed shortages could occur if they fail to kill a highly resistive super bug or weed regardless of chemical application used. Nature has a funny way of surviving against all odds. This in genetics is known as survival of the fittest. And super bugs appear to be winning over man’s attempt to keep them at bay.

There are already signs this is occurring. There’s a lot of data that illustrates how it takes significantly more chemicals to kill the super weeds and bugs today because of crop seed DNA genetic manipulation where chemical application is used to boost seed resistance against evolving super bugs and weeds.

If something doesn’t change within our farming practices we may become dependent on other countries to feed us.  Although this may sound far-fetched, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.  How would this be possible? Let’s break down the GMO and anti-biotic resistive gene concept to better understand how a failure of crop yield could cause a disastrous global food bank shortage and health pandemic.

Aside from super bugs and weeds that become resistive to chemical sprays and genetically engineered seeds that fail to be chemically resistant; there is concern over global, or transatlantic plant manipulation and the antibiotic resistive cause and effect on human health. “Antibiotic resistance genes are frequently used at several stages in the creation of genetically engineered plants… ‘Concern has been raised about the possibility that antibiotic resistance genes used to make transgenic plants [or Genetically Modified Plants] could be transferred to microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of humans or other animals that eat them, and therefore might contribute to the already serious problem of antibiotic resistant pathogens (CASA 2016).” Most specifically on a national and/or global scale.

What is the relationship between GMO foods, bacterial balance in the body and illness and disease? “Antibiotic resistance genes from GM foods are taken up by bacteria in the gut during digestion. If bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes were ever to cause infection, it would be very difficult for doctors to treat. Until now, however, there is no real proof that the antibiotic resistance genes in GM plants pose a threat. Regardless, as a precautionary measure, some experts say that antibiotic resistance genes should not be used (GMO-Compass 2006).”

There are reasons why organic farming plots are increasing within city urban and suburban areas.

Recall GMO seeds DNA has been changed to kill insects and survive a deluge of chemical sprays designed to kill weeds, molds and other bad microorganisms detrimental to healthy crop yields. Therefor it makes sense a GM-seed-to-crop food makes it possible for us to become host to a super bug, then untreatable disease becomes more likely. Whereas a medical condition may not be any match against a flesh eating bacteria.

Many believe this has already occurred in the form of any number of bacterial organisms resistive to antibiotic treatment with the potential to cause life-threatening bloodstream infections, pneumonia and surgical site infections. MRSA appears to be such a bacteria. “During the past four decades, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, has evolved from a controllable nuisance into a serious public health concern. MRSA is largely a hospital-acquired infection, in fact, one of the most common. Recently, however, new strains have emerged in the community that are capable of causing severe infections in otherwise healthy people (NIH 2016).”

Research continues to explore and find encouraging evidence from specific probiotic formulations that suppress unfriendly bacterial bugs and build healthy gut bug balance. For instance, “In November 2005, a conference that was co-funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and convened by the American Society for Microbiology explored this topic.

According to the conference report, some uses of probiotics for which there is encouraging evidence from studies show how specialized probiotic formulation alleviates the following symptoms: To treat diarrhea (this is the strongest area of evidence, especially for diarrhea from rotavirus). To prevent and treat infections of the urinary tract or female genital tract. To reduce recurrence of bladder cancer. To shorten how long an intestinal infection lasts that is caused by a bacterium called Clostridium difficile. Prevent and manage atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children, etc. (MedicineNet.com 2016).”

Other symptoms supplemental probiotics may help relieve: constipation, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS), bloat, gas, stomach ulcers, tooth decay, periodontal disease, vaginal infections, skin and respiratory infections that children acquire in daycare, diverticulitis & colitis, etc.  They can also ease chronic yeast infections and enhance immunity through improved digestive absorption function and thereby provide essential nutrients to the body.  Improve lactose intolerance, alleviate flatulence, rejuvenate healthy radiant skin, nails and hair, etc.

When a healthy balance of intestinal micro flora, or probiotics is maintained within the body the bad bacteria (or pathogens) are in proper balance and typically improve overall body health. Talk to your naturopath or doctor about the right probiotic formulation to alleviate ill-health symptoms.

Probiotics are also widely used to alleviate Candida [a yeast species] symptoms where formulations vary for a specific application. “Candida syndrome occurs when the normal population of intestinal yeast suddenly explodes. Overgrowth of one species of yeast called Candida Albicans supposedly causes candida syndrome, which is characterized by chronic fatigue, weight gain, a white coating on the tongue and joint pain.

Taking probiotics such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei GG and bifidobacteria creates a hostile environment for candida yeast, returning your gut yeast population to normal levels (Adams 2013).

Research and medical data shows a complex and complicated connection relative to gut-intestinal health, anti-biotic resistance and pre-probiotic treatment [discussed below], engineered food crops and illness and disease.  But there is no doubt there is a connection.

The following recommendations should help to provide a healthy bacterial balance within the gut and intestines as a preventative health strategy to alleviate what ails you. It is recommended you consult with your physician prior to applying any of the “How to-s…” listed below.

How to Improve Good Bacterial Gut and Intestine Health

No doubt about it “Pickles” is going to get some good organic eats.

1. Increase flori balance through probiotic supplementation to include a daily vitamin and mineral (V/M).  Especially if diet alone can’t be radically changed to a healthier one.  In this way you’ll ensure anti-oxidant benefits while maintaining a healthy balance of probiotics to decrease and manage bad bacteria colonies. The best anti-biotic flori products seem to be in capsules, tablets, or powders.

These three supplements: V/M’s, antioxidants and probiotics work in harmony to provide improved nutrient absorption, immune system function and intestinal gut health. You’ll then begin to look and feel better immediately once started. Of course ask your physician which products they’d recommend is right for you.

2. Ask your doctor about a prebiotic which is different than a probiotic. Choosing or guessing which probiotic may be right may not be the 100% solution to alleviate what ails you. That is “the prebiotic is a specialized plant fiber that beneficially nourishes the good bacteria already in the large bowel or colon. While probiotics introduce good bacteria into the gut, prebiotics act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria that’s already there. They help your good bacteria grow, improving the good-to-bad bacteria ratio. This ratio has been shown to have a direct correlation to your health and overall wellbeing, from your stomach to your brain (Prebiotin 2016).”

3. If your drinking water is heavily chlorinated, filter it or buy bottled water. Chlorine kills good bacteria.

4. Improve your eating habits to receive optimum nutrients and consume less processed foods.  Avoid “overconsumption of yeast-feeding foods such as simple carbohydrates, sugars, peanuts, and alcohol and milk products can encourage Candida growth (Adams 2009).

Walk and talk with company you enjoy.

5. Reduce daily stress through yoga, meditation and low aerobics exercise [walk, bike, low intensity aerobics dance, etc.].

6. Avoid, or lesson dependency of antibiotics as medical treatment when possible or not needed when you have a virus. Antibiotics not only kill the bad bugs, they also take a heavy toll on the good ones. Ask your doctor for natural alternative pre-probiotic supplements and applicable medications.

7. Purchase 100% USDA organic foods when possible. Read labels and don’t purchase foods you suspect contain GMO products.

8. Consume more yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk, miso, tempeh, soy beverages, and garlic.

Consumer Plastics and Child-Adult Health Risk

I know just about everyone has experienced a funky taste when drinking out of a plastic bottle and familiar with odors produced by a new car smell.   Not only should consumers be aware of health risk associated with the plastics we store foods in, but also the off-gases polymer plastics emit from home furnishings, remodeled homes and during construction.

If you’re not aware, virtually all plastics and polymer products have an absorption effect on the body when consumed or when concentrated in the air we breathe.  The two key chemicals from these plastics that leach into stored food, drink containers, or off-gas into our air environment are “Phthalates” (pronounced “thalates”) and “bisphenol A” (BPA).

Many are unaware new furniture and carpet are made of polymer fibers that off-gas.

Off-gassing of products occur from many types of plastics and rubber compounds and products our comforts have become dependent upon.  A study in 2004 by Silent Spring Institute, Newton, Mass., and Harvard University’s School of Public Health found phthalates in the dust and air of every 120 homes they tested.  This is not so hard to believe since homes are furnished, remodeled and built using a large variety of polymer plastics, synthetic fabrics and solvent compounds of organic and bonded polymer resin blends.   

As of 2010 the market was still dominated by high-phthalate materials used in everyday consumer products including but not limited to: medical equipment, pharmaceutical pills, computer technology, food containers, cosmetics, vinyl upholstery, floor tiles and carpet, furniture, drapery, children’s toys, drink bottles, feeding containers, cleaning materials and adhesive compounds etc.

The good news is consumer awareness advocates, medical and health groups, including Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention continue to provide multiple epidemiological data points on phthalates absorption including respiratory concerns which has forced many producers to use non-phthalate plasticizers.  What is a plasticizer?  “Plasticizer is an additive used to make plastic more flexible.  Additives are chemical substances which when incorporated into polymer changes physical and bulk properties (Answers 2016).”  This is necessary because plastics require softening of the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) molecular chain to apply a desirable structural characteristic for a particular application.  This moldable or desired effect is also known as Polymerization of plastic.  This metamorphosis of rubber and plastic is possible by adding identical monomer resins that bond and strengthen a material from its organic petroleum or synthetic materials state (Plastics 2014).  The most widely used polyethylene plastics are within the packaging and plastic bags industries.

Some plastic containers are high in BPA and Phthalate. See Recommendations at end of article to determine the good from bad.

However the bad news show us how these chemicals can absorb and store themselves within adipose (fat) tissue.  And at some point “can” act as an endocrine disrupter.  “Because phthalate plasticizers are not chemically bound to PVC, they can easily leach and evaporate into food or the atmosphere.”  Stored products within plastic containers high in BPA and Phthalate concentrate are susceptible to this chemical leaching effect.  Especially “fatty foods such as milk, butter, and meats are a major source (Wikipedia 2016).”  As stated, these chemicals can have a negative impact on the endocrine (hormone) systems which are critical to (1) Total body metabolism (2) Growth, and (3) Reproduction.  These substances also appear to have a connection to obesity and diabetes, including any other number of ill-health effects.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have studied plastics leaching effects on the brains of fetuses, babies and children and determine there is some risk.  Whereas the chemical industry claims BPA poses “no threat” to humans.  However keep in mind both groups have their own interests at stake.  One way to put these opposing views into perspective, consumers simply need to recall a few consumer safety and commission reports on-topic not so long ago.

Yes their cute and cuddly but not necessarily safe for infants and toddlers.

For instance, “in response to a 1998 Consumer Product Safety Commission request, retailers including Kmart, Sears, Target, Toys “R” Us, and Wal-Mart stopped selling heavily mouthed baby products with phthalates and 7 manufacturers removed the harmful plastic compounds from production.  Recall phthalates found in toys are used as a plastic softener in polyvinyl chloride also known as PVC or vinyl to achieve the desired toy attributes.

Some PVC toys may be labeled with a V or #3 inside the chasing arrows triangle usually located on the bottom of a product.  Most won’t be labeled at all.  Generally, if a toy is a squishy plastic—like rubber duckies and baby dolls—or if it has highly flexible plastic as a component—like the clear pages in child “photo albums,” the clear plastic purses that some girl’s toys are sold in, or the plastic-like “fabric” used on some dolls—you should avoid it or call the manufacturer to ask if the product is made with PVC or phthalates (PBS 2008).

Also the rate of leaching effect of BPA into infant formulae from plastic baby bottles is of concern after heating it.  “We found that drinking cold liquids from polycarbonate bottles for just one week increased urinary BPA levels by more than two-thirds.  If you heat those bottles, as is the case with baby bottles, we would expect the levels to be considerably higher. This would be of concern since infants may be particularly susceptible to BPA’s endocrine-disrupting potential,” said Karin B. Michel’s, associate professor of epidemiology at HSPH and Harvard Medical School and senior author of the study (Harvard T.H. Chan 2009).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “show BPA is present in humans at levels found harmful in laboratory studies!”  Since BPA and Phthalates absorption and respiratory contact appear to be unavoidable in developed countries there are some preventative measures consumers can take to reduce exposure.

To mitigate health risk of plastics, rubber and sealant polymer materials made with “Phthalates” and “bisphenol A” (BPA) chemicals, the following preventative and proactive measures will help.

Recommendations:

-Baby bottles – Select bottles made from glass or a safe non-polycarbonate plastic.

-Avoid washing plastic dishware with harsh dish soap and hot water.

-Find “PVC-free” on the labels of soft plastic toys and tethers.  Choose wooden toys as another option.

Almost all plastic drinking containers are marked to show a plastics grade quality.

-Do not purchase plastic containers with “PC” stamp. Or plastics numbered, #3, #7.

-Choose plastics, #1, 2, or #5 in the recycle triangle.  Do not heat beverages in plastic containers.

-BPA can leach from metal cans lined with polymers.  Buy all baby food products in glass containers.  Use canned and bottled plastics food and drinks well before expiration date.

-Choose metal utensils, enamel, or ceramic plates for feeding that are also microwave safe.

-Avoid foods wrapped in plastics, such as meats and cheeses.  Buy deli products wrapped in paper.  Use stainless steel and glass drinking containers.

Plastic food wraps are used extensively to sell all kinds of fresh food products.

-Ensure home ventilation systems are clean and 10% outdoor air intake is circulated into the home or business environment.  For example, I have two windows in my house I leave open approximately 2 inches 24×7.  One on the lower and upper floor.  This reduces off-gas concentrations of home polymer plastic chemicals off-gassing within home environment.

-Consider buying used as opposed to new car.  Or keep windows down a quarter inch to remove new car smell when parked or driving.

Solvent and glue petroleum based products are essential to the home remodel and construction industries and off-gas chemicals.

-When using caulking, glues or installing new carpet, floor tile, siding or concrete pad ensure outdoor air circulation is abundant.  Then aerate space adequately during cure times.  Then get into the practice of the open window concept previously mentioned.

It’s a new year and will it also be the beginning of a new you?

How many different directions could you take in making a New Year’s resolution that would make you happier, more energetic, feel and look good and more excited about life?

So what is your New Year Resolution, what do you want to change? Is it to finally lose that weight once and for all, start a walk/jog exercise routine, spend more time with the family, get out of a bad relationship-start a new one, stop smoking-drinking, get a new job etc.?

In building any action plan to resolve any problem, “yes this includes a New Year’s resolution,” you first must target what’s causing you to lose sleep at night and focus during the day. Then once you’re sure you’ve identified the problem you must focus and stick to a relative-planned solution “that’s right for you and your situation” to accomplish the goal.

Whatever you need to do to make a positive life change will require 1) courage, 2) will power and a 3) sustainable action plan to see it through. But the forth ingredient in my opinion is the most important because it is the driver of the first three.

The action plan must be 4) relative to your needs and wants so you’ll have the motivation to sustain it long-term.

As a personal fitness trainer and consultant throughout the years, I’ve received an earful from my clients. One thing I’ve learned, the customer often brings a 3rd party solution to the table. But these well intended solutions are custom designed for someone else. All too often in the world of fitness, health and life coaching, custom designed plans are relative to another individuals life goal profile. This means these plans will not work optimally, or work at all for you.

For example, you may share a similar obesity and diabetes condition, but there are many ways to lose weight and treat diabetes. Some treatment plans will work for some and not others, or as effectively.

In other words when I develop a fitness program for one client, I don’t pass it on to the next one who has a similar goal. If I did that I’d lose clients, why?  The Desired results would likely not occur.

We are all of various ages, sex, genetics, culture, body type, mental and physical readiness, have different lifestyle needs, wants and activity goals. Our motivations and will power differ greatly as well as our habits, behavior, environment, medical histories and current health conditions… the list goes on.

So how can you successfully plan to create a new you for the New Year?
