Toxic Versus Healthy Cookware Knowledge

Although the bar-bee presents some health risk... I use white oak quarters to make natural briquettes... 'Chemical free.'

If barbequing foods was more convenient and healthy…  I’d eat this way everyday.”  Carcinogens are released and absorbed into foods through high heat smoke temp exchange.

Throughout the years toxic cookware products have fueled consumer safety and health risk concerns abroad.  Although cookware technology has made great strides in decreasing health risk factors, those risks still exist in inferior cooking vessel products.

Cookware safety concerns stem from the fact metals and sealant toxins can be released and absorbed into the blood regardless of the advancement of cookware technologies.

Learn how to avoid unnecessary health risk by understanding how to use the right tool for the job and identifying breached cooking vessels & sealants.

For those unaware, most pots and pans have a protective HEAT barrier sealant which protects us from the reactive nature of metals. The cookware bonding and sealant technologies today can protect consumers from hazardous materials when used and cared for per manufacture instruction. However when unaware of cookware quality and signs of overuse… hazardous sealants and metals are more apt to absorb into foods.

“Unfortunately, both copper and aluminum react readily to foods. (Copper, when ingested in quantity or consistently can cause liver, stomach, and kidney problems as well as anemia. Also, aluminum has long been suspected of contributing to Alzheimer’s disease (Chu 2005).”

“The reason this became a concern is that large amounts of the material have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, which proves that aluminum crosses the blood/brain barrier. This does not establish a causal link, which would be needed to say definitively that aluminum in the brain causes Alzheimer’s disease.” However “Aluminum is on the 2007 list of top priority toxins in the United States (a list put out every year by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry), and aluminum has been clearly identified as a toxin for the human nervous system, immune system and genetic system (New 2015).”

Compromised Teflon Aluminum Pan. Note the scratch marks at bottom of pan. This sauté pan has been replaced.

Another concern with use of aluminum pots and pans is when treated with a Teflon sealant over the metal. Then that surface material becomes compromised.

There is a two-fold contaminant health risk factor with compromised cookware. A scratched or worn Teflon surface for example exposes the food to aluminum and flaking of the sealant material.

The two-fold contaminant factor increases as cooking temps near 450 degrees and  significantly increase when over 500 degrees.  This produces toxic fumes and causes Teflon to bubble off metal pans with chemical flakes further contaminating the food. I tested the 450-500 degree premise by overheating a compromised Teflon pan.

I filled a Teflon coated pan with water and heated it over a propane stove at a high temperature.  Once the water was 2/3 boiled out of the pan the Teflon began to flake into the water at 475-500 degrees. Within a short period of time 1/3 of the bottom pan was exposed aluminum with Teflon flakes floating in the water.

“Dupont, the inventor of Teflon, was sued for withholding safety information about the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in non-stick cookware.” “Studies which used animals as test subjects revealed that non-stick cookware “is more likely than not” related to, or a cause, or catalyst of the following medical problems: Children’s healthy development, risk of liver, pancreatic, testicular, and mammary gland tumors; Altered thyroid hormone regulation; generalized damage to the immune system; Reproductive problems and birth defects.”

Compromised Teflon coated pans are good for one thing… target practice [Marc Woodard].

“Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are both fluoride compounds.” These hazardous chemicals are also known as PFC (perfluorinated compounds). “Fluoride is a poison that depresses the thyroid, which can cause hypothyroidism, particularly with repeated exposure. It accumulates in the bones, teeth, and pineal gland. It has been linked to brittle bone disease, and it causes cognitive problems. ‘The E.P.A. reported that PFOA accumulates inside humans for years, and it has been verified to produce cancers in laboratory tests (Corriher 2008).”

“EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) officials due to a growing body of evidence showing them to be highly toxic, extraordinarily persistent chemicals (some NEVER break down in the environment) that pervasively contaminate human blood and wildlife all over the globe. Recent research has shown that prenatal exposure to PFCs compromises early childhood immunity and that general exposure increases the risk of arthritis (EWG 2013).”

Healthier Cookware Choice

Anodized Aluminum Cookware is a Safer Alternative to Teflon sealed pots and pans – These days, many health conscious cooks are turning to anodized aluminum cookware as a safer alternative. The electro-chemical anodizing process locks in the cookware’s base metal, aluminum, so that it can’t get into food (West 2016).”

Anodized Cookware

Anodized Cookware

For those that want to know more about the metal construction of your pots and pans selections, “Anodized’ means that a material such as the aluminum in cookware, has been subjected to an electrolytic process, where natural oxidation has been controlled.  This involves immersing the aluminum in a chemical bath and applying an electrical current to it, causing oxide to be produced from the resulting rust on the aluminum. This layer of oxide hardens the aluminum and makes it resistant to corrosion.”  “Which results in an even harder and more durable (cookware) coating (2014 Mifflin).”

Calphalon is the leading manufacturer of anodized aluminum cookware, but newer offerings from All Clad (endorsed by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse) and others are coming on strong (West 2016).”

“At the time of its founding, All-Clad distinguished itself from other cookware companies by using a patented “roll bonding” process by which metals are sandwiched together and then formed into a cooking vessel. The company derived its name from this cladding process, which is applied not only on the bottom but extends all the way up the sides of each cooking vessel (Wikepedia 2016).”

Copper Cookware is excellent for certain uses.  Also it is not a health risk concern when selecting a durable sealant technology and when proper use and care is applied. Cookware “favored by chefs for sauces and sautés is copper, which excels at quick warm-ups and even heat distribution (West 2016).   “Copper can be toxic when used on the inside of cookware, so it is usually reserved for use on the outside or with a lining of other materials.” Such as “Copper pots and pans are usually lined with tin or stainless steel so the consumer doesn’t need to be concerned with copper toxicity. Excellent heat conduction can be maintained through the lining (Carmichael 2015).”

All-clad sauce pan

Clad-Stainless steel sauce pan

Stainless Steel Cookware Combines Different Metals – In fact, stainless steel is really a mixture of several different metals, including nickel, chromium and molybdenum, all of which can trickle into foods. However, unless your stainless steel cookware is dinged and pitted, the amount of metals likely to get into your food is negligible (West 2016).”

Be careful how you clean it though, as frequent use of abrasive materials can scratch through the protective stainless surface and release small amounts of chromium and nickel. Although stainless is very safe for most to use, “people with nickel allergies should avoid cooking with stainless steel cookware (EWG 2013).”

Cast Iron Cookware may Actually Improve Health… and is known for its durability and even heat distribution. ‘Cast iron cookware can also help ensure that eaters in your house get enough iron—which the body needs to produce red blood cells. ‘Iron is considered a healthy food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.”

“Consumers should beware, most cast iron cookware needs to be seasoned after each use and as such is not as worry-free as other alternatives. Lodge Manufacturing is a leading American producer of cast iron, enameled cast iron, seasoned and stainless steel cookware (Lodge 2016).”

Ceramic Cookware has the properties of cast iron. “Le Creuset with cast iron, stainless, copper and aluminum heat exchange interior to enamel coating does not appear to cause health risk with long term use (West 2016).”

“The Le Creuset foundry uses standard sand casting methods. After hand finishing, items are sprayed with at least two coats of enamel. The enamel becomes resistant to damage during normal use (Wikepedia 2016).”

There isn’t much negative on Le Creuset. Only that it’s very expensive and a World chef Cuisine preference of cooking standards. The only user precaution was to ensure avoidance of chipping the enamel. The smooth and colorful enamel is dishwasher-friendly and somewhat non-stick, and covers the entire surface of cookware to minimize clean-up headaches.

“Glass Cookware. All glass is inert, nontoxic, and safe (except for lead crystal glassware, which – surprise – contains lead) (EWG 2013).”

Other Safety Cookware Tips

“Aside from glass, stainless steel, modern enamel (which is cadmium-free) and iron, there is anodized aluminum” which was discussed earlier. Although “Anodization is a process by which aluminum is treated with a nonreactive hard coating of aluminum called aluminum oxidation, which does not leach, but it might still be prudent to avoid storing tomato sauce and other acidic substances in any aluminum vessel. Care should also be taken to discard aluminum ware that is damaged in any way, which can happen even with the anodized version (New 2015).”

Throw away scratched Teflon cookware and any other type of badly worn, pitted or chipped pots and pans and replace with higher quality products. The first one I replaced was the Sautee pan.

Enamel sealed clad sauté pan.

Stainless ceramic sauté pan.  Approx. $55.00.  This is my favorite cooking pan. It still looks the same – good as new one year later.

I replaced it with two high quality pans of various size: One a stainless-clad, and the other a like-Le Creuset type – Stainless Ceramic. I discovered I liked them both and began purchasing similar quality products based on price to upgrade compromised cookware.

For me replacing the sauté pan was a priority because I used it a lot to cook my meals. Most can’t afford to replace high quality cookware all at once. My advice, replace poor quality cookware with high quality products during seasonal promotions, e.g., black Friday and Holiday season. In time you’ll have great quality kitchen ware at 20-50% off normal price.  I’ve replaced all my Teflon cookware with stainless, clad, enamel and ceramic pots and pans. I’ll never go back to Teflon sealed cookware.

“Avoid using metal or hard plastic utensils on cookware. These utensils can scratch surfaces and cause pots and pans to wear out faster. Use wood, bamboo or safe silicone treated instead (Wax 2015).”

“How to mitigate the possibility of ceramic lead absorption”

Protect your family from ceramic cookware containing lead that can leach into cooked and stored foods. “It is not uncommon for ceramic items used for cooking or simply for decoration to contain lead. In fact, lead has been used in the glazing process for ceramic dishes, bowls, pitchers, plates and other utensils for centuries. Typically, after being fired in a kiln, a piece of ceramic will appear smooth and shiny due to the lead in the glaze (Claire 2012).”

Cookware with lead: Safe use and risk factor awareness.

Enjoy good eats knowing no toxins have been absorbed into the foods you love to eat.

Enjoy good eats knowing ‘no cookware toxins’ have been absorbed into the foods you love to eat.

1) Acidic foods such as oranges, tomatoes, or foods containing vinegar will cause more lead to be leached from ceramic cookware than non-acidic foods like milk. 2)  More lead will leach into hot liquids like coffee, tea, and soups than into cold beverages. 3) DO NOT use any dishware that has a dusty or chalky gray film on the glaze after it has been washed. 4)  Some ceramic cookware should not be used to hold food. This includes items bought in another country or considered to be a craft, antique, or collectable. These pieces may not meet FDA specifications. 5) Test kits can detect high levels of lead in ceramic cookware, but lower levels may also be dangerous (Wax 2015).”

Now you’re armed with the most up-to-date kitchen cookware knowledge and can select the right tool for the job that puts your family’s health first.

Steve Jobs, Swayze and Landon’s Cancer Deaths Avoidable?

18 02 2019

Updated: 2/17/2019, Marc Woodard

Florida a popular place to retire – with the second highest state cancer cases nation wide.

Years ago I  was motivated to learn more about Pancreatic Cancer after hearing of Patrick Swayze’s diagnosis. Eighteen years earlier I recalled how shocked I was to hear about Michael Landon’s death from the same type of cancer in 1991.  And Steve Jobs in 2011.  I thought “what a loss of such talented and productive people.”

These events highlighted the insidious nature of cancer in general.  But especially brought national attention to pancreatic cancer. I wondered, “was the cause of cancer brought about by cultural-geographic, genetic, environment and/or a combination of various lifestyle risk factors.”

Initially when I wrote on this topic in 2009, I wasn’t able to deduce the exact cause that led to Swayze and Landon’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis. However today I feel the cause has narrowed down to a handful of likely possibilities relevant to behavior, habits and environmental health risk factors.

After Jobs death I became more aware of certain habits, genetic predisposition, stress, diet and environment that may hold the answers to identifying likely causes of cancer in general.  Today I’m more confident in saying, “pancreatic cancer is ‘likely’ related to a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors, whereas risk dramatically increases when genetically predisposed to acquire it.”

Steve Jobs lifestyle was different from the two actors [he wasn’t a smoker or drinker].  But had a dietary obsession with certain foods. Aside from this distinction all three of them lived in a dense area population… Los Angeles California, “the #1 cancer producing state (American Cancer Society, 2017).”  These famous people also appeared to be Type-A personalities [workaholics, competitive drivers and short fused, etc.,].  Type-A people are more likely to develop obsessive behaviors and habits to cope with stress which doubles the risk of coronary heart disease.

What is it about Alaska that makes it the 3rd lowest cancer producing state?  Number 1 – Wyoming, Number 2 – District of Columbia.

“Apparent links between psychological stress and cancer could arise in several ways. For example, people under stress may develop certain behaviors, such as smoking, overeating, or drinking alcohol, which increase a person’s risk for cancer [National Cancer Institute, 2017].”

Next I wanted to know how could anyone prevent, or remit cancer naturally from the body once it took hold?

First I needed to know a little more about these famous people lifestyles and could they have done anything different to prevent or change their cancer story?

California has the highest cancer cases… and significantly higher than the three other highest cancer producing states: FL, TX, NY

First, we’ll look at the two Hollywood legends to see what habits they had in common. Then compare lifestyles with Steve Jobs – Man behind Apple computers and iPhone.

Thereafter, review past and current national cancer statistics to draw a conclusion based on likely factors that contributed to their cancer and shortened lifespans.

Like most of you I was an avid follower and admirer of Michael Landon. My favorite childhood shows were Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven series.

Michael Landon was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma at the age of 54 – on 5 April 1991 and immediately underwent chemo therapy. His cancer had spread to his liver at first causing stomach cramps. Thereafter his pancreatic cancer was diagnosed 7 weeks later. The cancer became inoperable due to spreading within the liver and lymph nodes. Only 1% of patients with a metastasized cancer combination like this survive a five year period. He died in Malibu, CA on 1 July 1991. It was reported he drank heavily and had a four pack per day smoking habit.

“Pancreatic cancer is one of the faster spreading cancers; only about 4% of patients can expect to survive five years after their diagnosis (Park 2011).”

I also followed Hollywood legend Patrick Swazye. Three movies and one series in particular that memorialize his acting and physical abilities, “Dirty Dancing, Next of Kin, Roadhouse and the Beast series.”   Swayze was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in March 2008 and underwent chemo therapy with new experimental drugs (vatalanib/gemcitabine) to shrink the tumor and prevent the development of new blood vessels that would otherwise nourish it.

“He’s a strong guy, and he’s got a great attitude,” says Ron Wise, a Cedars-Sinai spokesman, “in my experience, that has a lot to do with how things go.” Patrick Swayze’s biggest regret was his smoking which he continued to do until his death. Doctor’s agreed, even if he quit at the time of diagnosis would have no bearing on his outcome …

High-temp charred foods especially meat absorb carcinogens from fuel source.

After more than a year of cancer, Swazye completed 13 episodes of the beast without pain medication.  Swayze Died, 14 Sept 2009 at the age of 57. The cancer ultimately spread to his liver. His life expectancy after diagnosis was 5 months.  He lived 20 months after diagnosis.

Steve Jobs founder of Apple Computer and arguably one of the most brilliant innovators and businessmen of all time had an uncommon form of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Oct 2003 (Park 2011).

It was reported throughout his life he was a vegan with an addictive and obsessive fructose [fruit] habit that rarely included the macro-nutrient protein [exception – he infrequently ate sushi and eel]. His food obsessions often limited him to apples, carrots, smoothies and fruit drinks for extended periods of time.

[He named the company after his fondness for apples.

“Research published in the November 2007 issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded there was “evidence for a greater pancreatic cancer risk with a high intake of fruit and juices but not with a high intake of sodas.”

“Although the UCLA findings are preliminary and more research needs to be done, the Reuters headline “Cancer Cells Slurp Up Fructose” is fair warning to all of us addicted to fruit and fruit juices (Daniel 2012).”

It was also reported he smoked marijuana and used LSD during his college years. It is likely he smoked weed during his battle with prostate cancer. This was not acknowledged by Jobs, but suspect by colleagues. Whether these things had anything to do with his cancer, I could not make that connection.

Nine months after diagnosis, Jobs underwent surgery to remove a tumor. In 2009 he underwent a liver transplant, a procedure appropriate for only a small number of patients with this type of rare pancreatic cancer. On October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated islet-cell – neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer … at the age of 56, Jobs died at his Palo Alto, California home around 3 p.m. (PDT).

There was an Interesting Self-Treatment Decisions Made by Jobs – He postponed surgery to remove a neuroendocrine tumor against his doctors advisement. Instead his controlling obsessions, including bazaar dietary habits led to self-treatment using alternative medicines. Had he chose to go through surgery 9 months earlier – it is likely the cancer would’ve been removed [as in other similar cases – Early removal of this type of cancerous tumor often cured the cancer]. His form of cancer was not as deadly or aggressive as the most common form.

Not until the cancer reached the late stage 9 months later did he agree to use conventional treatment to stop it from spreading. Unfortunately by this time the cancer had spread to other surrounding tissues. He also never quit his obsessive high fructose dietary habit after diagnosis. Even after being warned by his personal physician – the body would have a better chance of fighting cancer by adding more protein to the diet – THIS was the opinion of medical experts. Many believe Jobs would still be alive today if he had the surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy immediately after diagnosis. For whatever reason, Jobs believed alternative medicines was his best bet to beat cancer.

Later in his autobiography, it is mentioned he regretted the decision to self-treat his cancer.

Can location be a cancer causing factor?

I believe “unhealthy lifestyle factors which include environment increases the risk of  DNA gene string mutation and cancer cell growth and metastasis.”

State Cancer Statistics 2002 – 2017

State cancer statistics show an increasing and concerning rise in cancer cases over the last 17 years.  Note: Per Capita [population] as a percentage of state cancer cases have not been evaluated within this article.

States with highest cancer population diagnosis during year 2000  (California 113,200), Florida (88,100), Texas (76,100), NY (81,500), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,220,100

States with highest cancer diagnosis during year 2008  (California 156,530), Florida (101,920), Texas (96,320), NY (97,130), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,437,180.

States with highest cancer diagnosis during year 2017 – (California 176.140), Florida (124,740), Texas (116,200), NY (107,530), US diagnosed “All” Cancer Totals – 1,688,780.

“In 2017, there will be an estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases diagnosed and 600,920 cancer deaths in the US (American Cancer Society, 2017).”  Get All Cancer Stats Now.

Comparing 2009 – 2017 Pancreatic Diagnosis and Cancer Deaths

Pancreatic Cancer estimates in 2009 ~42,700 people will be diagnosed resulting in ~35,420 deaths will result making it the fourth deadliest cancer (American Cancer Society).

Pancreatic Cancer estimate in 2017 ~53,670 people will be diagnosed resulting in ~43,090 deaths will result making it the fourth deadliest cancer (American Cancer Society).  Deaths are evenly split between male and female. See Pancreas Statistics at a Glance

Pancreatic Cancer Risk factors,

“Factors that may increase your risk of pancreatic cancer include:
Chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), Diabetes, Family history of genetic syndromes that can increase cancer risk, including a BRCA2 gene mutation, Lynch syndrome and familial atypical mole-malignant melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome
Family history of pancreatic cancer, Smoking, Obesity, Older age, as most people are diagnosed after age 65.

A large study demonstrated that the combination of smoking, long-standing diabetes and a poor diet increases the risk of pancreatic cancer beyond the risk of any one of these factors alone (Mayo Clinic, 2017).”

Conclusion

It’s interesting to make comparisons of national cancer statistics to see if research and treatment progression has been made in reducing cancer cases nationally – Most specifically pancreatic cancer deaths.

Eight years later after my first article on this topic, I find it alarming – medical science has not identified the exact physiological cause of pancreatic cancer, or any other form of cancer for that matter. All types of cancer are on the rise. However medical research is narrowing down connected lifestyle, genetic, environment and other illness causing identifiers that increase risk.

Hawaii places 9th in the lowest producing cancer states. Hawaii is also known to have a consistent 73-80 degree days year round.

I believe, “anyone can improve the odds of activating cancer cells within the body – even if genetically predisposed. Simply by making better lifestyle and environmental choices.T

CONSUMER HEALTHY LIFESTYLE KNOWLEDGE IS POWERFUL – Apply Healthy Lifestyle Habits to Reduce Cancer Risk

  • The four states with the highest cancer cases increased significantly from 2002-2017.
  • Pancreatic Cancer is still the 4th deadliest cancer.
  • National Cancer cases are on the rise.
  • No one [male/female] is immune from pancreatic cancer, or any cancer for that matter.
  • Genetic predisposition [BRCA2 gene mutation]and Lynch syndrome increases cancer risk.
  • Prevent or Manage diabetes – it increases cancer risk.
  • A high body mole-count may be symptomatic of gene mutated cells. See a dermatologist or oncologist.
  • Bad cancer causing habits: alcohol, smoking, restricted-fad diet and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Avoid high fructose diet as research has exposed a likely cancer connection.
  • Balanced diet include all 3 macro-nutrients: proteins, carbs and fats to nourish the body.
  • If you have a dietary obsession with any food(s) or fads, seek behavioral therapy.
  • There are no conclusive studies that show pancreatic cancer is caused by any specific food type [high-fructose diets are suspect].
  • There are studies that show processed food chemicals have cancer causing agents.
  • Unhealthy relationships & environment alter hormone & Cellular DNA & function and cause physiological stress which can cultivate cancer cells.
  • Sedentary lifestyle often leads to obesity, diabetes and heart disease and known to increase cancer risk.
  • Low-impact aerobic exercise at minimum is needed to sustain healthy immune system and remove toxins that would otherwise nourish cancer cells.
  • Whole foods diet reduces processed food chemical intake and cancer risk.
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners, especially hyper-palatable sodas, syrup & coffee creamers.
  • Bad air environments have high Pro-Oxidants [toxic CO pollutants] – Dense city development with high smog levels is toxic to respiratory-immune systems.
  • Barbecue – high temp smoke and char temps – are known to be carcinogenic.
  • High-energy radiation from the sun, x-rays, gamma rays, alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons, can damage DNA and cause cancer.
  • Breast cancer tops Prostate Cancer in top 4 cancer states by ~135-190%.
  • Melanoma cancer cases is higher in top 4 cancer states, which are also sunshine states.
  • If cancer runs in family within any of the top 4 cancer states – location may be a factor.
  • If diagnosed with cancer the best odds of beating it – aggressive surgery regardless of stage of cancer – seek chemotherapy and radiotherapy upon medical recommendation.
  • 10 Lowest-Cancer Producing States in Order: Wyoming (1), Dist. of Columbia (2), Alaska (3), Vermont (4), North Dakota (5), South Dakota (6), Delaware (7), Rhode Island (8), Montana (9), Hawaii (10). Note: Per Capita [population] as a percentage of state cancer cases have not been evaluated within this article.

MOST RECENT PROSTATE CANCER MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

“One huge step forward was the use of radiation to reduce the impact of prostate cancer that spreads to bones. Another was the development of better diagnostics, including PSA tests, which mean that most men are diagnosed while their prostate cancer is still curable (Elster 2017).”

CONCLUSION

“Bottom line: There is no definite technique to prevent pancreas cancer. However, not smoking, exercising, and eating a proper diet is the best lifestyle choice for overall health (WebMD, 2017).”

Moderation in everything we do is key to healthy longevity, living life to the fullest and staying well.

In order to understand how unhealthy Trans Fats are it is necessary to first define and relate to them and how this unhealthy fat got into our food in the first place.  And why the FDA agrees it’s not fit for human consumption.

Hydrogenated Trans fats were invented in the 1890s.  What took the FDA so long to put a ban on the hydrogenation of vegetable oils?  And even with a ban does this keep Trans Fats out of our diet?

Much of the hydrogenated Trans Fat story has to do with low product cost and hyper palatable fat that addict consumers to purchase those products repeatedly. Which in turn generates huge profits for the food processing companies.  These basic facts explain the longevity of Trans Fats in the marketplace.

The FDA ban of trans fats occurred after decades of studying the effects of it on human health.

“Although saturated fat is the main dietary culprit that raises LDL (Low Density LipoProtein), added Trans Fat and dietary cholesterol also contribute significantly to increased LDL’s [which represent unhealthy blood chemistry and related cause to cardiovascular disease].  Trans fat can often be found in processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils such as vegetable shortenings, some margarines (especially margarines that are harder), crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, and baked goods (FDA 2017).”

In the past consumers sought low cost, tasty and convenient processed foods and praised the hydrogenation process because of cost and exceptional flavor. But now the FDA agrees with consumer safety advocates – banning this fat completely over the next few years would be best for consumer health and health care industry.

To learn why the FDA is now taking action it is necessary to define Trans Fats, hydrogenation, poly hydrogenated oil and how this man made fat causes disease.

Adding more hydrogen to oil is simply the process of man infusing more hydrogen atoms (hydrogenation) to a vegetable oil(s) mono-poly unsaturated fatty carbon molecule chain.  The vegetable oil than becomes a “Partially” or fully hydrogenated (fat saturated) “Trans Fat.”  i.e., Listed on food labels as Partial hydrogenated and/or Trans Fats are the same thing of varying atomic degree.

But not obvious to most consumers…  through hydrogenation the oil becomes a more solid Trans hard fat that’s very unhealthy for us.  That is vegetable oils are artificially hardened to achieve “firm” convenience soft spreads with long shelf life e.g., margarine, cooking oils and shortening.

To identify Trans Fats in food products, manufacturers list these values on ingredient labels.  Note the words Partially Hydrogenated soybean Oil (PHO) on margarine and butter labels below.  This is code for Trans Fats. You can find PHO listed as an ingredient in many snack, dessert foods, vegetable oils and even health supplemental products, etc.   And when you see 0g Trans Fats on the label, food manufacturers are allowed up to .5grams Trans Fats per serving and can list this value as zero while simultaneously displaying PHO.

The good news for consumers as previously stated, the FDA now requires food manufactures to follow more stringent Trans Fat label laws.  For instance if a food product has .5g Trans Fats or more, that value has to be listed on the label (FDA 2017).

This means all Trans Fats in foods must be identified.  Even if the words Trans Fat equals 0 grams, the food product is allowed up to .499grams per serving when PHO is listed.  Many don’t know Trans Fats are also in organic wholefoods.  Ever wonder how they get into animal and vegetable products?

Live stock graze on vegetation which contain a certain amount of poly unsaturated oil in them.  Through animal grazing PHO’s (Poly Unsaturated Oil) are digested and some of this oil is stored in saturated fat cells.  Hence all products have varying amounts of naturally stored PHO or Trans Fats in them.  Just like humans.

Unlike organic dietary fats, hydrogenated Trans fats are not essential to the diet and significantly increase health risk when consuming too many of them.

I know conscientious consumers remove animal fat before eating a steak, or  ladle the fat from broth to reduce fat intake calories.  This is easy to do because it is easily seen.  However Tran’s fats blend into processed baked and convenience foods and can’t be seen or removed.  This is why it’s important to understand where Trans Fats come from and how to identify them in the foods eaten daily.   This knowledge becomes even more important if you now suffer from obesity, diabetes or heart disease.

Over consumption of fatty foods in general is bad.  But far worse when too many deceptive Trans-fats are mixed into baked goods.

In the past hydrogenation of cooking oils was used excessively by food industries until it was determined Tran’s fats were worse for you than natural occurring organic fats.  Early 2006, companies began removing the Trans fat hydrogenation processes from foods and labeling “0” amounts of Trans Fats as required by the FDA.  But as you now know “0” does not mean “0 Trans Fats and there a connection to organic food PHO chemistry.

In 2015 the “U.S. Food and Drug Administration finalized its determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not “generally recognized as safe” or GRAS for use in human food.  Food manufacturers will have three years to remove PHOs from products (FDA 2015).”

Even through the FDA recently determined Trans Fats are not safe for humans the end to manmade Trans Fats won’t end until 2017-18…  this will not ban all Trans Fats from all foods because of the natural occurring PHO found in livestock and plants.  But food manufacturers will be required to continue listing Trans Fats, mono-poly and saturated fat values.

Is this a win for everyone?  I guess it depends on individual and company perspective.

For the health conscious consumer and those suffering from obesity, diabetes and other related illness and disease these changes could be of great dietary health benefit.  For those on fixed and low incomes it may cost more and limit choice of healthy foods in the marketplace.  For a manufacturer it may increase the cost of doing business.  Unfortunately his increase in cost is usually passed onto the consumer.

There will be winners and losers no matter how you look at this thing.

The Thyroid a Powerful Weight Regulating Gland

22 09 2018

Updated 22 September 2018

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck no bigger than a buckeye butterfly.  But this glands hormone also influences other hormone producing glands which have much to do with our weight and other important metabolic interactions and bodily functions.  Just because these glands are small, does not mean they are insignificant.

Walk More to Burn Additional Calories

It is seen through patient and animal research that hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) can cause many types of problems:  weight gain, depression, sluggishness, fatigue, bad mood, unhealthy appearance, impotence, water retention that adds to excess weight and cellulite, pear-shaped figure, infertility, PMS, hardening of the arteries, cystic breasts/ovaries (including breast/ovary cancer), irritability, bad complexion, puffiness under the chin, forgetfulness, irritability, apathy, dry skin, intolerance to cold, enlargement of the thyroid and unhealthy hair, nails and teeth.

If you have hypothyroidism to the degree where one quarter of the thyroid hormone thyroxin is produced, you may also suffer from chronic fatigue.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, hyperthyroidism causes an overactive thyroid gland condition that has the opposite effect on the body’s metabolism.  The “hyper” condition speeds up the metabolic process, causing underweight and hyperactive tendencies.

A more serious disorder from an underactive thyroid is a goiter (swelling in the neck area).  This occurs because the thyroids enlarge to compensate for lack of iodine in the diet.  However, a goiter can occur, even if you’re not iodine deficient.  This swelling or enlargement of the thyroid glands is also known as Graves Disease.  Regardless of whether you have a hypo/hyper thyroid condition, both conditions untreated can become a life threatening situation.

Before I get more into the meat of the matter let’s first understand what trace mineral stimulates the thyroids hormone “thyroxin” secretion.   A very important mineral is iodine.  There is also another one needed that works with iodine to manufacture the thyroxin hormone.  And that mineral is Tyrosine, an amino acid.  Luckily Tyrosine can be consumed through many types of high-protein foods such as chicken, milk, cheese, beans, bananas, soy products, peanuts, almonds, fish, turkey, etc.  Iodine, along with tyrosine is required to produce a normalized balance of the thyroxin hormone to stabilize our caloric burning furnace.

Spoil your children in moderation. Walk and share fun exercise activities with them.

There is a TSH (Thyroid-Stimulation Hormone) test that tells a treating physician if your thyroid is producing proper amounts of thyroxin hormone to keep your metabolic system balanced.  The test determines if your thyroid is working correctly through reading TSH levels in the blood.   This stimulator hormone is produced by the pituitary gland.  So as the pituitary gland slows down within the metabolic system it releases more TSH to signal “speeding” up the thyroids production of thyroxin.  This test can determine proper levels of TSH hormone in the blood.  The TSH hormone release is directly related to many interconnecting metabolic processes.  If all other metabolic processes are working correctly, the thyroid hormone release stimulated by TSH should normalize all metabolic functions which impact weight loss/gain and mitigate other disorders.  But if too little, or too much TSH is produced than the test will show ranges from under/over active and normal thyroid gland.

Normal TSH test scores will be between 0.4 and 2.5.  A low score of 0-0.4 is hyperthyroidism.  And if the score is between 2.5 and 4, this means there is risk for hypothyroidism.  Anything higher can lead to a major health concern.  Many doctors will resist treating patients until they hit a 10.  This is basically due to the delicate balance and interactions these hormones and chemical exchange relationships have on the entire metabolic system.  Nevertheless, if your measurement is at 4 or above, or below 2.5, you should discuss a treatment course with your medical specialist.

Although your thyroid only requires a hundred thousandth of a percentage of your body weight in iodine (150 micrograms daily – the best sources of iodine comes from seaweed, onions, seafood and salt); without it the thyroid cannot function.  If you don’t have enough of this mineral, you gain weight.  But if you get enough of it in your diet, adding more through supplementation will do absolutely no good because the glands function is balanced, or better known as “normalized effect”   That is, if your thyroid is functioning normal, iodine will not help because the thyroid is already normalized and functioning correctly.

If you must take an iodine supplement for an underactive thyroid, kelp is the best organic source.  It appears to have “the best “normalizing effect on the thyroid gland.  However, if your iodine dose is incorrect, it is possible to supplement with too much, or too little.  Some of the symptoms of iodine over supplementation include:  Severe acme, become underweight, emotional imbalances, hyper-activity, mental and emotional instability, negative effects on thyroid glands, skin irregularities (welts on arms/face, rough skin) and problems with focus, or spaced out feelings.

Getting enough iodine in the diet should not be a problem since we get it in our everyday table salt, processed and fast foods and through its presence in crop fertilizers.  However, the key issue with our iodine in our everyday diet is, most of us do not get organic iodine (e.g., seaweed, “kelp”).  Homeopathic doctors have prescribed kelp, vinegar, B6 and a lecithin diet for treatment of obesity and other types of preventative disorders for years.  The diet is also beneficial to brain tissue, sensory nerves and spinal cord.

However the normalizing effect of iodine benefits for an overweight problem gets lost in translation within the market place for those desperate to lose weight.  That is, consumers are lead to believe if iodine is good for the thyroid, than more is better whether you need it or not.  But there could be nothing further from the truth.   There is another way to look at this statistically.  Eighty percent of all thyroid cases are diagnosed as the hypo-type.  But this percentage does not equate to eighty percent of those that are obese have a thyroid problem.

Aerobic workouts good for the cardio Muscular endurance

Let’s also not forget those who choose “not to exercise, or eat healthy diets,” but have healthy thyroids with plenty of iodine in the diet.  They will not lose more weight by increasing iodine intake.  Also, 8 times out of 10 thyroid disorder diagnosis are more prominent in women than men.  And as a natural progression of aging, increased risk of thyroid disease occurs naturally.  And if you have an autoimmune disorder, type 1 diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis your at higher risk for thyroid disease.  These diseases and other factors are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to diagnosing whether or not your thyroid needs stimulation to help you manage your weight.

If you do supplement your diet with iodine, it is important to understand it is also important to get enough vitamin A as well.  Vitamin A allows the thyroid gland to absorb the iodine.  If absorption of iodine through the gland does not occur optimally, then the production of thyroxin will occur relative to the glands absorption rate.  Recall, with reduced thyroxin hormone production, you have a lower BMR that does not help your weight loss and overall health goals.

One last point I’d like to touch on regarding a hyper-thyroid condition.  There are many cases documented where speeding up the thyroids function will cause weight loss.  But there are also cases where speeding up the thyroid function causes weight gain.  You ask how this is possible.  Because, by increasing the metabolic function, you also increase appetite.  Here is another truth, for those that lost weight during hormone treatment, once the hyper-active treatment stopped the weight came back.

Dogs need exercise as well to keep their body weight healthy.

Therefore, it appears that thyroid treatment to treat obesity does not appear to be real useful in many obesity cases.  This is why you should seek a treating physicians advisement to get help identifying the cause of your weight gain problem.  If you are diagnosed with thyroid disease, then you’ll likely be prescribed a synthetic thyroxin to replace the hormone your thyroid can no longer produce.

By working with your doctor to adjust to the necessary doses, you’ll begin to look and feel better.  In other cases some of you may need a combination of treatments to regulate, or lose body weight that include thyroxin prescription, diet and exercise.  And in other weight loss/gain situations – relative to disease and disorder(s) diagnosis…

Varying medical treatment strategies may be necessary as opposed to thyroid treatment. The point being, your thyroid may not be the problem. It may be one of several other connecting hormone functions dependent on the thyroid hormone that has malfunctioned and needs treatment.

Disease Scientifically Linked to Genetic Engineered Food Crops

22 09 2018

Fast food’s consumed likely contain GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms)

Updated:  22 September 2018

I remember long ago our family would plant hundreds of vegetable seeds in mid May on the family farm.  This annual planting would produce a multitude of organic vegetables for meals.

Also one of our main crops (pumpkins) would be sold at the local market in October.

What we didn’t sell or consume would then be canned as a provisional food source that would last until next years crop was harvested. Times have definitely changed from when I grew up.

For as long as I can remember the foods farmed by American families were the most nutritious and healthiest throughout the world.  However, that distinguished honor is no longer the case.  A major factor for the decline of nutrition within the food industry has to do with escalating costs of farming foods-to-table.  This has led to farming foods in labs before it hits the shelf.

Most consumers don’t know food industry’s are made up of 8-10 major food chain monopolies.  But for the sake of simplicity I’m going to use a few examples of how  reengineering of lab farmed foods is harming health.  In this way it is easier to understand why it’s so hard for consumers to remove harmful foods from the diet… especially when labels don’t disclose GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) information. Monsanto has been producing man made GMO crop seeds and chemical food sweeteners (e.g., Aspartame brands: NutraSweet, Spoonful and Equal-Measure) for some time now.

Artificial Sweeteners in Nearly all non-concentrate.

Many food products consumed from the local grocery store now contain more engineered ingredients than one can imagine.  The likes of Procter & Gamble (P&G) foods corporation is one of the largest producers of products that are petroleum based and comprised of Genetically Modified (GM) crops produced from GMO’s seeds resistant to herbicides and pesticides as was the case in the popular Pringles potato chip product.

Not so long ago, some 800,000 cans of Pringles potato chips had been recalled in Japan because the potatoes used to make the chips had the “gene-altered NewLeafPlus and NewLeaf Y components developed by Monsanto in the vegetables DNA!  This gene altered potato is approved for consumption in the United States but not in Japan!  So one has to wonder, why is the gene altered potato still sold within American markets and not the Japanese markets?  And should this ban mean something to the American people?  I think it should and the proof is in what P&G did next.

They sold its Pringles business to the Diamond Foods Snack Company for $2.35b in 2011.  Then in 2012 the Diamond deal fell apart and the Kellogg Company bought Pringles for $2.7b in cash. Thereafter P&G decided to focus more on its house hold cleaners and beauty products. These products have know carcinogenic ingredients [i.e., household cleaners, pet foods, cosmetics and personal care products].

Could it be that P&G and Diamond Foods Snack Company’s didn’t want the consumer backlash? Could it be that the new shareholder coalition “Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility” and GMO health risk connection is making sense to the 40 plus food companies [i.e., Safeway, Sysco, Whole Foods, Kellogg, Kraft, Heinz, Hershey’s, Starbucks, etc.]. The shareholder coalition message to these companies reports how Monsanto and GE foods are bad for Investors. Could these decisions to bail out have anything to do with  consumer health and liability risk.

GMO Corporations have been criticized for funding anti-labeling attempts to prevent disclosure laws from becoming public knowledge, while also working to weaken Europe’s laws regarding toxins in household products. And now these messages have spread to the largest economies in the world!

California field ready to plant.

California consumer advocates continue to supports mandatory GMO labeling as attempted during a Ballot initiative in 2012.  Over 80% of polls support GMO labeling for consumers.  Since California is the 8th largest economy in the world if the initiative passed it would have had a dramatic effect on changing consumer packaging and ingredient decisions nation-wide.

“The California Senate rejected on Wednesday a bill that would require labels on genetically-engineered foods. This is the second time in two years that labeling legislation has fallen short in the most populous and agriculturally-productive state.” [RT.com, May 31, 2014]

“Now Colorado and Oregon have ballot measure out to the voters to determine if their states will support the labeling of GMO’s on food ingredients.” [MirrorAthlete, 23 Oct, 2014]

“While state-level initiatives continue, other groups are focusing their attention on passing labeling legislation at the national level. Among them is the Just Label It (JLI) campaign, a national coalition of more than 600 diverse organizations working for the mandatory federal labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods (JustLabelIt.org 2018). In time I believe GE labeling laws will become a mandatory federal law.

It’s interesting to note Monsanto and Procter & Gamble have the same institutional corporate owners.  The top institutional owner of P&G foods is “Warren Buffett’s” Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., holdings, which owns ~$4.9b in P&G stock (NYSE: PG).  Proctor and Gamble current revenues (ttm) are ~$83.68b.  Also Bill Gates invested and purchased 500,000 shares of Monsanto Stock (NYSE: MON) and supported the use of GM crop technology [data reviewed – Oct 2014]. I’m not sure about their positions to date.

It’s very difficult to make change to consumer product laws when windfall profits for investors, employee jobs, market economies and corporate holdings are at stake.

Regardless – No matter how much money these moguls have and what interests they control – They can’t hide the animal studies that tell consumers truths about GMO’s and potential impact on human health. Animal studies show how Monsanto’s GMO corn is likely linked to organ damage and Aspartame as a cause of diabetes and obesity.

Food carts – Serve some of the most unhealthy foods one could consume.

There are reported toxicity reactions divided by the estimated reporting rate and where scientific studies corroborate that chronic aspartame ingestion and health damage has affected well over one million consumers in the U.S.   This is not so hard to fathom especially when you think of all the sodas and processed foods consumed on an annual basis.  Artificial lab farmed sweeteners is one of the primary causes of diabetes and “near” childhood obesity epidemic in this country.

It is also not well known by consumers, Aspartame “Monsanto’s artificial sweetener” is 200 times sweeter than sugar per equivalent volume.  And is also one of the most taste altering addictions that stimulaties consumers taste preference for rich high fat calorie foods.  Science shows us Aspartame products are also responsible for Formaldehyde poisoning!  How’s that?  Aspartame is an unstable chemical when stored (warehousing) too long in warm temperatures, the chemical properties of the artificial sweetener within soda cans converts to another type of dangerous chemical.

Monsanto has contributed greatly to changing our entire food chain by genetically altering many food crops DNA molecular structure – through GMO technology and super sweetening of foods.

Genetically modified crops have never been an integral part of the human or animal diet prior to the mid-latter 20th century.  The health consequences for those who over consume GM crop products are currently unknown.  Various scientific animal studies reveal to us that GM livestock feed and processed food ingredients correlate a clear negative impact on the function of the kidneys and liver.  It is more important than ever that more research focuses on the toxicity and mutation GM crop varieties may have on vital organs and DNA.

Looking at Genetically Modified (GM) Crops a Little Closer.

GM lab farmed products is an engineered process where a recombinant (genetic recombination) technology uses DNA molecules from different sources to combine and create a new set of genes within crop seeds for example.  This is done to make crops more resistant to decay, insects, chemical fertilizers, etc.  In this way farmers can mass produce volumes of what appears to be healthy food for consumer markets using less chemical sprays and fertilizers.

It’s not just the GMO corn and potatoes that the consumers should be aware of when purchasing product within the marketplace.  For example, corn is not only available off the husk, but also comes canned, as cooking oil, or processed corn starch, etc. Products such as cereals and baked snacks (as in seen in our Pringles example) are processed from the same crops which likely have artificial sweetener additives as well!  Let’s not forget about the livestock being fattened up by GM corn feed.  Now you can see how our food and personal use products have been reengineered and connection to health problems.

Hyper-Sweetened foods contribute to disease

Is it any wonder “Corporate controlled and protected artificial sweetener testing continues at Monsanto, torturing the ethics of academic medicine?” [Prevailing Winds, Issue 1, 1995].   They do so without fear of retribution because the FDA, “our consumer protection agency” turns a blind eye by accepting these corporate studies as safe consumer products.  [US Congressional Record, Volume 131, No. 106, August 1, 1985, pages S10826-S10827]

Why does this type of regulatory protection continue?  I believe it has a lot to do with corporate, institutional and governmental greed, power and control.  This marketplace dynamic is contributing to higher health care costs and more obese children and adult health problems than any other time in history.

I’ve listed the Top GM Food Crops that likely contain GM DNA.  If you want to know more about artificial sweeteners and GMO crops, simply see the referenced links below.

Corn – Monsanto revealed 50% of American sweet farm growers now use GMO seeds that have been modified to create its own insecticide.  Mice studies show when fed with GMO corn, offspring are smaller and there were fertility problems.

Tomatoes – GM tomato seeds prevent the vegetable from easily rotting and have been specifically engineered for longer shelf life.  Some mice fed these tomatoes after a couple of weeks died.

Dairy Products – Monsanto has created a recombinant (genetically modified) bovine growth hormone that’s injected into 22% of our U.S. dairy cows to increase insulin growth factor (IGF-1).  It is warned by scientists that increase in IGF-1 in humans have been associated with colon and breast cancer.

Potatoes – Mice fed potatoes with Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki Cry 1 had toxins in their bodies.  Although studies show stability of the Cry1 toxin in the mouse gut, there have been studies that show just the opposite results.

Peas – A gene from kidney beans was inserted into the DNA of peas to create a protein that functions as a pesticide.  This GM crop has been found to cause immune responses in mice.  However, it is not known the impacts on human consumption.

Rice – South East Asia’s rice is now GM to contain high levels of vitamin A.  It is not known if rice production in the U.S. in now GM rice varieties with human protein genes to help thwart infant diarrhea in 3rd world countries.  Unknown allergic reactions and other mutated gene transfers are now of a serious public health and environmental concerned as reported by an online journal, China Daily.

Soy – Products that are manufactured from the soy bean now have the GE resistive herbicide DNA structure within various foods (Soy products: flour, tofu, beverages, oil, pastries and baked products).  Hamsters that were fed GE soy products resulted in infertility and a high mortality rate.

Cotton – Cotton has been GM to resist pesticides like corn and soy.  Cotton is considered food because cooking oil can be extracted from the seeds and consumed.  Thousands of Indian farmers suffered severe rashes upon exposure to Chinese agricultural methods in order to kill the cotton bollworm.

Does organic without certification really mean organic?

Rapeseed – Canola is made from the edible Canadian Rapeseed crop; which most are familiar as a popular processed cooking oil and margarine.  Honey can also be produced from GM rapeseed.  As much as 1/3 of all pollen present in Canadian honey may likely be GM pollen.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact our health.

Papaya – Papaya crops produced in Hawaii was modified in 1999 to be virus-resistant.  Also, Monsanto provided Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India the GM technology to further develop a resistant ring spot virus papaya for India.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact health.

As consumers need more to worry about…  Research is also beginning to show links to Morgellon’s Disease correlated with GM recombinant foods.

This disease a few years back was a mystery, or something one conjured up in the head.  But the opposite is being shown to be the case.  Patients have presented strange skin irritations, skin anomalies and most specifically a mysterious tiny blue, red and black fiber growth that protrudes from an itchy skin lesion on areas of the body and where GM foods are concentrated, sold and consumed.  There appears to be a direct correlation with these fiber samples that are not of human DNA origins, but in fact when comparing these fiber samples, Ahmed Kilani (researcher) found they belonged to a fungus.  Then it was found by Vitaly Citovsky (biochemist) and determined that these fibers contained a substance called “Agro bacterium.”  This substance is used commercially to produce genetically-modified plant foods!

For now, the lack of national labeling requirements makes it hard to know which foods have GM ingredients.  You’re also now aware ~10 of our major farmed food staples may be partially or fully produced from GM seeds.  And other products such as dairy, fish, meats and processed snack foods could have GM ingredients.

Regardless of organic certification – local farmed foods are typically better than most store bought foods outside of local farms.

Recommendation – If you currently have immune, or other health, illness or disease issues, or are concerned about GM foods – consume more organic foods.  The best prevention to mitigate possible health risks from GM foods is to shop as organic as possible and purchase more foods labeled “certified organic.”

Be sure to vote for GMO food labeling disclosure laws when it gets on your states ballots as it is your right to know what your consuming!

How to Identify Home Products that Cause Illness and Disease

24 08 2018
Healthy longevity is important especially if we hope to enjoy retirement with our loved ones.

Healthy longevity is important especially if we hope to enjoy retirement with our loved ones.

Updated:  24 Aug 2018

I’ve known for years the chemicals in our consumer marketplace and environment has a direct correlation with disease and rising mortality rates. Through epidemiological, disease prevention and mortality rate studies and World Health Organization reports, etc., a direct connection with consumer products is found to have an effect on health and longevity. And that connection is the Westernized cultures who produce the pathological causing pollutant and chemical contaminants that attack cellular integrity by their oxidant agents.

Through the advancements of modern medicine a decline in mortality rates occurred – benefiting an increase in average lifespan during the early-mid-20th century. However the data today shows a reverse in trend. The marketplace in the later 20th and early 21st century changed by introducing thousands of toxic chemical contaminants into the food chain, water and air we breathe.

The global data shows a direct correlation to man’s manipulation of our food chain for sake of profit. As a result cancer is on the rise and so is every other major medical problem including diabetes, arthritis, heart, circulatory and autoimmune disease to name a few. At this rate our children and their children will live shorter lifespans than previous generations and suffer unnecessary pain and costs that need not be.

Many of the statistical bullet points below were relative in 2007 when this article was first published. And just as relative and concerning today… mortality rates and disease is not decreasing. And occurring in an advanced culture where modern medicine should be reducing these things – It’s not.

Previous and Updated Consumer Statistical Facts,

It is a fact, cancer mortality rates throughout the globe have increased over the last decade. “7.6 million People died of cancer in the world during 2007.  13% of all deaths are due to cancer (American Cancer Society).”

Since then, cancer cases have risen globally. Unfortunately “Cancer is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths in 2012 [World Health Organization, 2015] and (Woodard, 2015).”

From 1965 to 1982 over 4 million distinct chemical compounds were formulated by corporations.  And at least 250,000 new formulations created annually since then.

Approximately 6,000 chemicals are added to our foods (Woodard 2015). And the FDA has no knowledge of 1000 of them or effect on cellular health. And fewer than half the other 4000 chemicals have not been tested by the FDA (Marler 2013).

700 chemicals have been found in drinking water.

Over 500 chemicals can be found under kitchen sinks or laundry rooms in American homes.

Over 800 neurotoxin chemical compounds are used in cosmetic-perfume industries.

How many store bought products are chemically influenced by man?

How many store bought products are chemically influenced by man?

Seventy percent of our daily calories now consist of processed foods high in trans-fat, sugar, salt, other strange chemical preservative and processing additives, etc., that lack organic nutrients.

“But if we care about people dying before their lives are really over or having to endure preventable suffering, and our neighbors racking up huge medical costs that we all share, then that space on our plates for processed food shouldn’t be anywhere near 70 percent. Perhaps closer to 20 or 30 percent. It’s only then that we can call our food supply truly safe (Marler 2013).”

310,000 Americans go to early graves due to processed food diets that cause heart and diabetes disease, etc., including cancer.

For example, food preservative BHA is a known carcinogen found in many processed foods we consume daily: McDonald’s sausages, an ingredient found in Gatorade, Tang, DiGiorno Pepperoni Pizza, breakfast steak, bread making, etc., (Marler 2013).

3000 annual deaths and 130,000 food borne illness are reported by hospitals.

Bottled water, how pure is it? Studies show not much better than local drinking water.

There’s a lot of manmade toxic chemicals in the air we breathe, water we drink from plastic containers and foods we eat.

Many health conscientious consumers don’t consider the cosmetic and hygiene products they use every day.

To provide awareness to common toxic home care products with known carcinogens, to identify them in your house you can perform a home toxic product identification challenge. Then you decide if you want to keep the products or replace them with an organic home cleaning, laundry and hygienic product line. When you remove known toxic chemicals from your home, less stress is put on the autoimmune system which mitigates and relieves ill-health conditions.

Look no further than your kitchen cleaning, or bathroom hygiene cabinets. Simply select a shampoo, toothpaste or common home cleaning product and look for 1 or all 3 toxic ingredients listed below. The 3 chemical and toxic ingredients I chose out of hundreds of unsafe chemicals consumers unknowingly consume daily: Propylene Glycol, SLS (sodium laurylsulfate) and DEA (Diethanolamine).

Replace toxic hygienic product with green products to reduce health risk.

Below I’ve provided a short descriptor of each disease causing chemical ingredient found within common home use consumer products. Keep in mind, I’ve only listed 3 absorbed through the skin, inhaled or ingested. Also I’ve barely scratched the surface or impressed upon the fact, there’s thousands of chemicals and toxins we take in daily found in our air, water and food.

Propylene Glycol – What’s Anti-Freeze doing in our shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, lotions, toothpastes and pet food, etc.?  Yes the main ingredient is Anti-freeze, Propylene Glycol.  “Topical application to injured skin or intravenous administration has sometimes been associated with lactic acidosis, Comas, Seizures & Renal Failure.  Linked to: Central Nervous System Effects, Metabolic Effects & Poisoning (Walker 2015).”

SLS (sodium laurylsulfate) – What are concrete floor cleaner, engine degreaser and car wash detergents doing in hundreds of other personal home care and cleaning products, such as bath & body products, etc.?  The main ingredient is SLS. “SLS (sodium laurylsulfate) acts as a detergent. Used in the laboratory as a membrane destabilizer & solubilizer of proteins and lipids, causing potential harm to skin and eyes. Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS because proteins are denatured (Walker, 2015)”

DEA (Diethanolamine) – What is a known cause, or contributor to cancer, or of being potentially dangerous or hazardous to our health doing in shampoos, conditioners, bubble baths, lotions, cosmetics, soaps, laundry and dishwashing detergents?

The main ingredient within many bath and body and cosmetic products is DEA, a known cancer causing ingredient. The California Center for Environmental Health (CEH) performed independent testing of 98 personal care products and found “products testing high in DEA and Cocamide DEA used to thicken hair, ‘was listed a known carcinogen last year.” Many personal care products with DEA in them is manufactured and sold by many major retailer brands consumers know and trust. Just to name a few Colgate, Palmolive, Colomer and Paul Mitchell.

Major retailers known to sell, or have sold products with toxic chemical ingredients include: “Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Pharmaca and Kohl’s and a store brand children’s bubble bath from Kmart and a children’s shampoo/conditioner from Babies R Us were also found with cocamide DEA. Falsely labeled organic products from Organic by Africa’s Best also tested for high levels of the cancer-causing chemical (CEH previously won a legal settlement with this company requiring it to end its use of phony organic labels) (Center for Environmental Health 2013).”

For a list of brands and retailers that sell DEA personal care products, click on CEH link below.

Still need more proof.  Check the back of your household cleaning, or hygiene product bottles. Pick an ingredient name you can’t pronounce or don’t understand its meaning. Type this name into an Internet search engine. You’ll see it is a manmade chemical product and it is not organic. I’m willing to bet you have at least 1 of 3 listed chemical ingredients in one or more of your favorite personal use and home cleaning products.  Most likely exposed daily to all 3 and other toxic chemicals too numerous list.

If you are using products with ingredients you can’t pronounce, or understand their origins, these almost always are manmade chemical ingredients.

Take advantage of seasonal farmers markets.

The best advice I can give you is to begin replacing all home cleaning and personal care products with “clean green home and hygiene products” and eat as fresh organic foods as possible. Also cut down on processed and convenience food consumption.

The chemicals we use to clean our homes and foods we consume are at war with our bodies.  And I’ve not even brought up the air we breathe and water we drink. To get more insight on these consumer topics of interest please click on the following MirrorAthlete article links: How Sick Buildings Effect Lives and Is Fluoride in Our City Water Needed or Safe.

It is more important than ever to remove the toxic household products and heavily processed foods from our plates. Consume as many fresh fruits and vegetables daily as possible. As a health insurance policy add a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement to provide an anti-oxidant boost to immune system. This will help shield cellular health by protecting it from free radical damage caused by product and environmental oxidant damage and environmental stress taken in daily.

Without preventative health measures in our Westernized culture the aging process will advance with insidious disease and shorten lifespans.

Alzheimer’s Disease Contributing Factors

20 07 2018

Do processed and cooked foods have any connection to this disease?

Updated:  20 July 2018

Why is Alzheimer’s disease the 4th leading cause of death among our elderly, only behind heart disease, cancer and stroke? It also happens to be the 3d most common mineral element on the planet we’re exposed to with frequency.

The World Health Organization to include many other research teams has determined there’s a correlation with aluminum and elderly mental health risk and mortality.  “According to Washington DC’s Department of the Planet Earth, United States and Canadian regulatory agencies, acknowledges a potential risk factor in elderly cognitive impairment. It makes sense, research shows aluminum can produce toxic, oxidative stress in the brain and a brain autopsy study of elderly persons found them to have aluminum levels 20+ times higher than a middle-aged group” (Edward 2013).

But not all research institutions are on board with this cause and disease relationship. For instance, “People exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer’s disease, but other studies have not found this to be true. “We do not know for certain that aluminum causes Alzheimer’s disease.”  The ideal being the possibility those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or genetically predisposed to get it, have brain tissue that absorbs and stores more aluminum to greater degree than others when exposed” (ATSDR 2008).

However it is certain “eating large amounts of processed food containing aluminum additives or frequently cooking acidic foods in aluminum pots may expose a person to higher levels of aluminum than a person who generally consumes unprocessed foods and uses pots made of other materials (e.g., stainless steel or glass). The consensus of this particular study finds aluminum levels found in processed foods and foods cooked in aluminum pots are generally considered to be safe” (ATSDR 2008).

Aluminum is so common within our consumer products it’s also found in city water and everyday hygiene and beauty products.

Other research shows us you are 3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s through the use of arousal anti perspirants and hair spray containing aluminum.  Both entrants into the body are absorbed easily through consumption and may be easily absorbed by the brain through the nasal cavity (Public health reports, Natural health, University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter).

Aluminum cookware such as pans, pots and thermal beverage holders present absorption of mineral risk into foods. And for a pan lined with a Teflon nonstick surfaces this may present a separate health risk concern. It is suggested by consumer safety advocates Teflon may present health risk. However, M3 and DuPont research, show no conclusive proof that Teflon puts your health at risk.

Cookware sealants became a consumer health issue because 3rd party research shows when you get into varying chemical sealant composites to bind-bond-seal the aluminum or copper cookware as “THE” protective “HEAT” barrier may present other known & unknown health risks.  ‘To minimize the amount of aluminum that dissolves into your food from cookware, avoid cooking acidic foods like tomatoes and rhubarb in aluminum pans. Don’t store leftovers in aluminum, because the longer the food sits, the more aluminum it can absorb from the pan. Since more aluminum will dissolve out of old, pitted and worn pans, throw away your aging aluminum cookware. When you replace your old pans, consider upgrading to anodized aluminum pans” (LivingStrong 2015).

How does one find out “how much” alum, or aluminum sulfate is added to our water?  The amount necessary to reduce algae and turbidity creating crystal clear drinking water from our city utilities dictates the amount of aluminum sulfate required.  If you drink city water, you are ingesting alum.  Due to the unanswered link between Alzheimer’s and aluminum, (some scientists) are urging water treatment facilities use ferric sulfate, or calcium as opposed to aluminum sulfate to accomplish the job. Call your city treatment facility, or water provider how they treat the water source.

Aluminum is also an occupational hazard, “Exposure to aluminum, unfortunately, is common with some occupations like mining, factory work, and welding. Welding can be especially worrisome because it produces vapors that, when inhaled, send aluminum directly into the lungs in a “super absorption” status where it is released to the blood and distributed to the bones and brain. Researchers have repeatedly examined the consequence of inhaling aluminum vapors and the results are grim” (Edward 2013).

Regardless of all past studies and research on topic… aluminum-to-Alzheimer’s cause and effect may be triggered, or activated through a gene. “For a minority of Alzheimer’s victims, an identified gene that produces a detectable protein makes them vulnerable to develop this disorder. But in most other cases we don’t know the cause. Suspected causes have included environmental toxins, such as metals (remember throwing out those aluminum pans?), infections, and autoimmune reactions in which the body’s immune system attacks one of its tissues” (Baker and MediResource Clinical Team 2017).

There are no definitive studies to show aluminum absorption is the primary trigger, or cause of Alzheimer’s disease. But instead it appears likely the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is derived from a combination of genetic, environment or lifestyle factors.

Recommendations to Decrease Alzheimer’s Risk,

  1. Medical research correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and aluminum is very compelling in many studies. So much so a prudent person would remove “all” aerosol or cosmetics to include deodorants made of, or containing aluminum. Especially if Alzheimer’s runs in the family – as a preventative measure.
  2. If you see the word alum (aluminum), on any consumer product, or consumable in aluminum container or cookware, or aerosol – seriously consider an alternative product.
  3. If you drink beverages made from aluminum cans, it would be prudent to switch to glass bottled or other container type.
  4. The greatest risk of aluminum exposure at a super absorption rate is an occupational hazard where inhaling vapors presents a serious health risk potential. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should always be worn during working with or around aluminum vapors and where PPE is inspected with frequency for breach or defects per manufacturer safety use instructions and inspection standards.
  5. Contact your local municipality and ask about aluminum sulfate in your drinking water and do check the bottled water to see if it’s simply bottled city or natural spring water with alum.
