Recreational and Medical Marijuana Use Perspective

23 07 2014
Life is full of many potential roads that can be traveled. Which life roads will you choose?

Life has many potential roads to travel. Which lifestyle path will you choose?

It is very interesting to learn how attitudes have changed about  marijuana use since I was a kid. After speaking with local youth in two states (California and Oregon) regarding marijuana use… there is a nonchalant attitude regarding medicinal and recreational use of this natural weed.

The common answers to my questions, “don’t you think marijuana will harm you in any way if you continue to use it?”  Or more to the point, “if you keep smoking the stuff, aren’t you afraid of addiction and associated health risks?”  Much like laying a bet, are you assured you are not gambling with your future life potential, relationships and health?

The common answers in reply, “Marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes.” “Alcohol unlike marijuana use is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths, broken families, job loss etc., where cannabis use does not appear to be the case.”  Other common answers I get from adults, “I can quit anytime I want to, it’s not addicting, it’s not a gateway drug and I don’t drink; I choose this drug as my recreational drug or pain management program of choice.  ‘I prefer this vice opposed to drinking.”

Others simply state, “For me there are no problems regarding the use of this drug, therefore, no harm to career, health, family or other future endeavors.” Much or our youth and many adults don’t appear to see recreational or medicinal cannabis a harmful substance derived from mother earth.  They see man-made pharmaceuticals and other illicit drugs to be worse compared to a natural weed habit or medical use.

It is interesting to note, they mostly compare weed within the same legal recreational drug class as tobacco, spirits, wine and beer. In other words, “on the street,” cannabis use perception is that weed is an  acceptable recreational and medicinal drug choice that is a right and should not be outlawed from such use.  However, there are risks of potential drug addiction and health problems from smoking marijuana just like any other toxin that needs to be filtered from the body.  Such as respiratory and carcinogenic risks from carbon monoxide inhalation.

My sampling of these queries is rather small, around 50 discussions on this topic where 80-90% concede (teenagers and adults), cannabis is probably the least harmful of the illegal drugs.  Almost all adults I spoke with acknowledge the medicinal properties and benefits for chronic pain sufferers and cancer patients.

Consumers today are very educated because of the Internet.  Allot of the paranoia over this natural weed has been removed from society.  Through demographic and cultural studies consumers see how various peoples have used marijuana socially, spiritually and medicinally for thousands of years without any documented deaths caused from an overdose.

I can see the medicinal benefits from scientific studies, however “all” drugs have the potential to addict the user and cause respiratory, or other secondary health and social problems similar to alcohol and tobacco overuse. Science does show in research studies where cannabis can have a negative impact on growing minds and bodies especially if one becomes addicted during the developmental stage of their lives [18 and younger].  This physiological fact alone can destroy a life before it begins.  This is why sales and regulatory controls must be put in place once State medicinal and recreational laws are passed.

I felt it was very important to add two addiction articles back in 2009 that support this updated article “Medical Marijuana Use; Part 1 (pain benefits) and “Lay your Bet” 2 (scientific support data) for chronic pain sufferers.”  As you read those two earlier articles, there is a very good case to continue THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) research and medicinal benefits.

There is some very good science based around severed or damaged nerve endings where only the THC and other cannabinoid receivers at the nerve endings provide pain relief through cannabis use.  Science also shows these damaged nerve endings do not respond to the typical opiate prescription; hence pain alleviation through the pharmaceutical prescription gold standard has little to no effect in many chronic pain controlled studies.  Read Part 2, Pain Relief Benefits. Regardless of the medicinal benefits, we must be very vigilant with our children while our states continue to relax marijuana use laws for patients and now recreational use in some states.

I’m in favor of legalized marijuana use for chronic pain sufferers and other ill-health conditions.  My concern over Recreational use legalization is controlling the substance distribution on a large commercial scale and keeping it out of the hands of our children. I’m very aware and concerned about our children’s access to marijuana should it become fully legalized for recreational use.  This would add an additional drug within hundreds or retail outlets and thousands of households that requires the same protections as prescription drugs, liquor and tobacco.

If and when recreational use of marijuana is approved by voters, it must have similar controls and penalties as our states liquor laws. In preparation for recreational marijuana legalization, parents must not and cannot depend on any school, or government agency to protect children from abusing any drug.  It is our responsibility as parents and educators to teach them to know differences between right and wrong and consequences of any form of substance abuse.

As part of this educational messaging, confusion can be mitigated amongst your youth if our federal government fully recognizes states rights per voters approved marijuana use laws and conflict of their drug laws.   Regardless of the voter approved marijuana use  consumers should not have to fear Federal prosecution because State and Federal laws differ.  Our kids and young adults should not be confused over Federal and State rights conflicts where incarceration may occur from an outside agency having no right to interfere with States Voters rights.  So long as its use and distribution stays within the legalized States boundaries.

Until DEA controlled substance laws relative to marijuana use become reclassified as less then a scheduled 1 controlled substance or recreational drug use, then cannabis users may be prosecuted over States rights by the FEDs.  These legalities must be resolved as cannabis will eventually be legalized in many states for medical marijuana and/or recreational use.  To not resolve this State’s right issue can only ruin young lives through unjust incarceration.

Here’s an interesting conflict within our DEA drug schedule classification.  THC the psycho active ingredient in marijuana is already legally sold as Marinol & prescribed by HMO medical providers.  However, most consumers don’t know this information.

Marinol is listed and classified by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), as a scheduled class III drug under the same physician prescription controls as Tylenol pain relief medication.  This is very easy for the patient to get their hands on. So instead of smoking the cannabis, or eating it which is the illegal part, you are legally able to ingest the THC oil [psycho active ingredient] prescribed by most HMO’s for almost any type of pain and/or disease.

Maybe our government within its infinite wisdom determined it would be easier to control marijuana distribution through legal pill prescription so children couldn’t get their hands on it.  Since Marinol must be refrigerated, it seems to me, it would be easier for our children to get their hands on these tiny capsules, conceal and consume.  So do they really have our children’s best interests in mind?

So it stems to reason, the medical community understands the medicinal use of THC and also enjoys the profits from this high cost prescription drug.   If the government was truly concerned about a chronic pain or cancer patient wellbeing the DEA would cooperate with States rights to fully legitimize the use of cannabis for pain patients.  They could do this by simply declassifying the DEA drug schedule to list medical marijuana as a Class III prescription similar to Marinol; and remove the fear of a patience medicine being taken away and prosecuted.

Recreational marijuana use on the other hand is a different ball game which requires a different set of rules to protect our children from drug abuse and addiction.  If and when medicinal and recreational use in your community occurs, it will be up to all parents to get involved within home town politics and tell elected officials your expectations of how local government will create home town policies to protect our kids from those that don’t want to play by the rules.

A Pill That Could Extend Life beyond 100 Years

23 11 2012

Could the Hands of Time Stand Still?

One type of pill currently being studied shows promise of extending life span well over the centurion mark while reducing disease.  The ideal that our “average” life spans could be extended over 100 years of age; well that would be miraculous.  But more so, one must wonder what would the “new” oldest living person recorded age become?  Currently the oldest recorded number sits right around 122 years.  And the average life expectancy is now 79.

Science has been experimenting with resveratrol concentrates in mice that show extended longevity, weight loss and decreased disease results.  However to receive the same benefit seen in the mouse studies, a human would have to consume the equivalent of a 1000 glasses of red wine daily.    I know, you’re thinking, I’ll just drink a lot of red wine, or find a high concentrate phenol (plant) substance pill to receive the same benefits as these studies purport.  Let’s be realistic, how many glasses of wine can you drink in a day?  And what type, how many and at what dosage of supplements are safe to consume daily?

Remember, the alcohol content and sugars in wine are not considered the healthy components when consumed in excess.  It’s the trace phenol substance resveratrol from the grape skin, seeds and vine that is the healthy component after harvesting and processing the red grapes to wine.

Let’s recall what is important to understand here.  Nutritionists and health experts mostly agree that red wine is heart healthy for us if we don’t exceed two 6-8oz glasses per day.  This is because this particular phenol (plant) substance is known to defend against harmful bacteria and fungi pathogens.  The most abundant source of resveratrol comes from vitis vinifera, labrusca, and muscadine grape sources used to make red wines.  The highest concentrate source is from the skin of these grapes.  There is ~50-100 micrograms (millionth/gram)/of a red grape source.  And ~.30 – 1.07 milligrams (thousandths/gm)/ resveratrol in a 5oz glass of wine.

Resveratrol is a natural occurring heart healthy plant stilbenoid (a metabolite) and naturally occurs in a variety of plants (red grape wine, hops in beer,  peanuts, Japanese Knotweed, melinjo fruit, mulberries, eucalyptus, spruce and lily).   The phenol substance from the grape stilbenoid falls under the classification of flavonoids.   Flavonoids are mainly found in fruits and vegetables which also provide anti-oxidant (super food) healthy benefits.  High concentrate flavonoids can also be found in seeds, nuts, green tea, buckwheat and pine bark.  The best sources of anti-oxidant flavonoids that can easily be incorporated into the diet are found in onions, tea and apples and of course red wines.

It appears through scientific animal studies this high concentrate phenol substance found in red grapes has the potential to slow down the aging process and reduce body fat.  As well as significantly protect against cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, etc.  For example, there are studies that show mice served an over saturated high fat diet and with 22mg resveratrol/kg of body weight/daily had a 30% lower risk of death as opposed to mice consuming the same high fat diet without the concentrate.  This shows us that somehow resveratrol normalizes risk of death and disease when one prefers a high fat diet opposed to one that doesn’t.  Prominent medical professionals state that these types of health results efficiencies in mice provide the same effects as a restricted diet [without diet restriction].

Disagreement of these types of positive efficiencies in metabolism as relevant to humans has been immediately challenged by opposing scientific views.

Of course animal experimentations that attempt to prove life extension, reduce health risk(s) and weight loss relative to humans is something of major controversy to say the least.  This is because there must be clinical controls acceptance for these studies across the scientific communities before one can make “any” claim relative to humans.  As of today, there are no published clinical trials for resveratrol study efficiencies in humans.  And coincidentally, there is no data available with regard to long-term safety for humans when ingesting high dosages of “like” supplement products.  And if animal protocol efficiencies “could” be designed relevant to human trials what would the study truly reveal?

For example, to make an equivalent subject comparison for a 175lb person, it would actually take 400mg resveratrol/kg of body weight/daily to achieve the same efficiency claims made in the mouse studies that used 22mg resveratrol/kg of mouse weight/daily.  This difference in dose adjustment requirement for the human metabolism is necessary because our metabolism is much slower than a mouse.  Therefore the studies using 22mg resveratrol/kg of mouse weight/daily was not relevant if applied to a human.

Here’s why.  To prove a comparative efficiency benefit, risk or claim as applied to humans using mice as the test subject: instead of 22mg resveratrol/kg mouse weight/daily the subject (mouse) would have to be fed a diet concentrate equivalent of 30,000mg’s resveratrol/kg body weight/daily!  And that comparable concentrate for a human “as stated above” works out to ~400mg resveratrol/kg of human weight/daily; which “likely” would present a toxicity problem.   This means to be comparable to the mouse daily supplement of 30,000mg’s resveratrol; an average subject (human) would need to adjust to the “controlled study” a daily dosage of ~4000mg/day of this phenol supplement!  [References: Wade/Baur, et al.]

There have been no studies on mice using anywhere near a 30,000mg’s resveratrol/daily concentrate.  However, there are more recent studies on mice using concentrates as high as 300 mg resveratrol/kg of mouse weight/daily for up to 4 weeks with no adverse effect.   To understand the efficiencies on humans as a result of these types of mouse studies will presently remain inconclusive.  And this will continue to be the case until “the” metabolic differences and dosages can be resolved and applied through an accepted concentrate equivalent relative to humans.

It will be interesting to see further animal studies that closely relate to the 30,000mg resveratrol human dose equivalent and what efficiencies/inefficiencies will be revealed once this occurs.  Currently in the marketplace you can purchase resveratrol 10-50mg supplements.

Consumers beware!  There are no accepted scientific peer studies and/or claim that indicate any related benefits for humans from these studies.  The phenol concentrate supplements you can buy in the market that claims high anti-oxidant, longevity, health benefits, etc., may have no benefit at all.  This is because purity of concentrate, safe product type and dosage relative to the human metabolism has not been determined.

Science truly cannot know the potential side effects and health risks if consuming a “high dosage” reservatrol (phenol) type, or like supplemental-herb diet product(s) to make any efficiencies or “safe” healthy claims.  And to this date the efficiencies seen in these animal studies do not equate to any benefit for humans.  In fact, to date these claims can only be made for mice.  And humans are not mice!

My recommendation:  Save your money on these types of phenol-herb supplements until science figures out how to determine a comparable animal-human study.  Eat balanced nutritious meals; cut out fast-baked-fried foods (high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar and salt), get plenty of daily exercise.  And supplement your diet with a “quality-high absorbable” daily vitamin & mineral supplement if you are not getting enough fruits and vegetables in the diet.  And drinking a couple of 5-8oz glasses of red wine daily appears to be heart healthy and an enjoyable way to spend your evenings.  Cheers!

Foods That Reduce Stubborn Body Fat

22 10 2012

Which Foods Will Help Us Burn Fat Instead of Putting it on?

Last Updated:  16 December 2017, by Marc Woodard

Now a natural and inexpensive self-help weight loss program that doesn’t involve exercise, only food consumption!

I thought it would be interesting and fun to list foods that support burning more body fat.

Often we don’t have time to exercise, but one thing we all do is eat.  And for those of you looking for a healthier food and weight loss plan try the fat burning foods listed below. These are great food substitutes as opposed to eating more processed foods that put on weight.

The foods listed below are known to increase body fat metabolism.

At the end of this article I’ve provided a 30 day weight loss program for you to try and lose weight simply by substituting these foods into your daily diet.

Any bean, or legumes help to burn fat, improve digestion and muscle building.

Berries are great anti-oxidants and help to curve food cravings.

Cinnamon a well known spice enhances blood sugar absorption into working muscles to burn more energy and fewer calories stored as fat. Use ½ o 1 tsp of the spice with your morning oatmeal, yogurt, cereal, tea, coffee etc.

Chili Peppers are not only a hot spice but a great metabolic accelerator. And any pepper you consume will boost to your metabolism and support a greater body fat burn.

Since coffee is a stimulant it is known that it will increase your metabolic system right out the gate first thing in the morning. And in doing so the process of lipolysis (break down of fat) is ramped up. Two cups of coffee per day is a great way to start this fat burning process.

Cooking oils such as Enova oil (soy and canola) does not easily store as fat and also supports the feeling of fullness.

Eggs are good. They assist in burning fat and building muscle.

Fish increases metabolism to begin the fat burning process and provide a sense of fullness.  Increase salmon, tuna and mackerel within your daily diet.

Grapefruit is a who’s who of weight loss enhancing super foods.  Not only a great anti-oxidant but aids in lowering insulin (fat store agent) and helps to better regulate blood sugar and increase metabolism for greater fat burning potential.  Be sure to also eat the white membranes for the best nutrient value.

Green Tea like coffee ramps your system in the same light. By drinking a caffeinated tea that has catechins.  Catechins are flavonoid phytochemical compounds mostly found in green teas.  They are considered potent anti-oxidants with great potential to prevent heart disease and cancer.  Small amounts of this substance are also found in grapes, wine, black chocolate and black tea.  Catechins are said to remove belly fat.  If you want to receive a two-for-one health benefit; increased metabolism and mid-body fat burning agent in the morning, drink approximately 3 cups of green tea per day.

Nuts with the skin intact and almonds are the best to assist in weight reduction. They help to reduce hunger and build muscle.  Peanut butter is a testosterone booster which builds muscle and boosts the metabolism.  Women have smaller amounts of testosterone then men but will also benefit from the fat burning aspects of this fantastic food.

Ensure you consume more Spinach and other green vegetables.  They help reduce the free radicals in the body and are considered an anti-aging food. Vegetables in general are included into many diets where weight loss is a fitness goal. Spinach and other greens also improve muscle recovery after workouts and help to build muscle.

Lean meats such as turkey, chicken (without skin) and lean beef cuts are known to build muscle and boost immune system.  These high protein meats also assist in providing a sense of fullness while suppressing appetite.

Whey helps to burn fat and builds muscle.

Whole grains (brown rice, whole grain cereal, and quinoa) such as those listed in parenthesis consumed in small dosages, i.e. 1-2 cups per day will help prevent the storage of body fat.

Yogurt has probiotic (friendly bacteria) in it where research shows a high correlation in reducing belly fat because the bacteria helps to absorb the fat and use the energy throughout the day as opposed to storing it.  Both low and regular yogurt types provide the same types of friendly bacteria and will do the job. 1-2 cups of yogurt per day should help reduce your body fat.

Dairy Products such as fat-free or 1% low-fat milk cheese also helps to enhance weight loss while building strong bones.

Self Help Body Fat Reduction through 30 Day Fat Burning Food Choices

Simply pick a few food types of these food selections as substitutes for other “unhealthy” foods (e.g., baked, fattening, high sugar/carbohydrate content, or processed foods) you’d normally consume at your normal meal times for the next 30 days [For snacks in between meals only select food types from this list].  As you begin this process ensure you weigh yourself on the scale starting day one and take a tape measurement at the hips and waist.

Don’t step on the scale or tape measure yourself until the last day of the month.  On the 30th day, weigh yourself and tape measure the hip and waist. Congratulations on the weight loss and reduced hip and waist size!  Not to mention the way your clothes fit.

And you can enjoy the way your clothes will feel as you near your 30th day. At the 30th day, weigh yourself and tape measure the hip and waist. Congratulations on the weight loss and reduced hip and waist size!

Tip: Do not weight or tape yourself in-between the 30 days. Body weight fluxes daily and a practice of daily measuring often stops healthy weight loss programs before they have a chance to take hold because too many of us expect instant results. If you lose weight the right way significant results can and do occur within 30 days. This tip helps to reduce the frustration that typically comes with daily measurements.

Low Testosterone, another Man-Made Risky Fix?

22 01 2012
To have longevity and healty active lifestyle is dependent on understanding the natural environment.

To have longevity and active lifestyle is dependent on understanding the natural environment

I’m sure most of you out there have noticed the “is it low-T” commercial ads.  The “T” is for Testosterone and defined as the male hormone that develops during puberty and maintains masculine characteristics throughout a man’s life. As men age testosterone levels tend to decline (hence “low”).  We’ll first cover testosterone therapy and then the herbs that are known to increase, or influence testosterone production.

The questions most men ask, is one type of treatment better than the other, how safe is it and is it right for me?

I recall about a year ago seeing a commercial on one of the big 3 networks stations that promoted, “is it low-T” asking questions like, “feel like something’s missing, don’t have enough energy, or want more romance in your life?”  “Seems harmless enough right?  Could fixing a low-T condition be that simple?  And is it for everyone?

Don’t be deceived by a great advertising spot that promotes a therapy and/or herb that offers a quick “safe” fix for your male symptomatic problems.  Androgen (steroid hormone) therapy has been around for a long time.  Whether or not this type of treatment is right for you can only be answered by a physician.  And the doctors that your primary care physician should refer you to that specialize in hormone replacement therapy are known as an endocrine physician.  An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor that specialize in diagnosing glandular disease.

I’ve often cited though my writings, “there is no way man could ever make a chemical product that “wouldn’t” have a health risk associated with it.  And just like weight loss diet formulas that promote fast results… when repeated too often will eventually ruin the body’s ability to lose weight naturally.  Raising testosterone levels “when not needed” presents similar types of metabolic challenges and other health risks associated with its use if not supervised and applied correctly.

Let’s first understand why testosterone in a man’s body is important and what happens to its production during the aging process.  Testosterone is produced by the testes and important for balanced metabolic body function, to build muscle, bone, lowering the voice and activates the sex drive and sperm production during puberty.

Science has confirmed that as a man age’s testosterone levels continue to drop after the age of 40, about 1-2% a year thereafter.  These numbers appear to vary slightly depending on the study.  As you age you should expect that your body will provide a proportionate amount of testosterone to maintain “healthy” male characteristics relative to age and throughout your life.  This is part of the “healthy” aging process, or aging gracefully.  There is no scientific evidence that shows by increasing testosterone levels for those that are “not low-T” or does not have an androgen deficiency that there will be a significant benefit.

There are a very “low” percentage of men that have lower than average low-T relative to age.  For those that do have unusual low levels of testosterone, this is the demographic that often receive a “quality of life” benefit from hormone therapy treatment says Karen Herbst, PhD., M.D., (an endocrinologist with the University of CA).

Little is known about the long-term effects of low testosterone and increasing those levels to normal range.  Science clearly understands that this hormone has an important connection to body weight and possibly cardiovascular health.  In other words, increasing testosterone levels may or may not be of health benefit for those that suffer with the following medical conditions:  osteoporosis – “thinning of bone,” diabetes, obesity, depression, heart health.  Andre Araujo, PhD, epidemiologist and researcher says illness that causes high blood pressure and diabetes for example “could” be the cause of low testosterone.  So for those that are diagnosed with low testosterone, some other illness, or disease may need to be treated first before the body can naturally elevate hormone levels.

Normal levels relative to age is important because a man’s overall health is dependent on these levels.  If testosterone levels fall below 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood than the general recommendation is to regulate toward mid-normal range.  This treatment can be accomplished through skin absorption patches, tablets, or injections.  This therapy provides those with below average testosterone production a quality of life benefit, as opposed to those that didn’t receive treatment.

If you are diagnosed with androgen deficiency (no other illness, or disease is the cause of your low-T condition), you “may need” testosterone therapy for life to correct the condition.  But if you start hormone therapy your testes will stop producing its own hormone.  This occurs once you influence hormone production with an enhancer because your body self regulates to maintain normal hormone balances.  Your body will gradually begin producing its own testosterone once you stop therapy to its previous levels.

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that testosterone therapy will be of benefit when not androgen deficient.  As a matter of fact, medical science indicates many types of health problems may occur if one participates in hormone therapy without a screening and not under a doctor’s supervision.  Also, you need to know that not all scientific data is in on the safety results of testosterone therapy.

However, Herbst states, “about 10% of men don’t get much of a response from therapy, while 90% see some sort of symptom improvement and 1 in 10 are ecstatic.  It is also stated that most of the men in clinical studies state improvement to erectile dysfunction and sex drive.  Primarily what these low-T marketers are selling is a quick fix for erectile dysfunction and sex drive.

Men diagnosed with the following conditions should absolutely not self administer, or participate “without supervision” in any type of testosterone enhancer program/product: men with metastatic prostate, or breast cancer.  This is because too much testosterone can cause these cancers to grow.  Other conditions that can be made worse when participating in testosterone therapy:  if you suffer from sleep apnea, severe congestive heart failure, severe benign prostatic hypertrophy, or high red blood cell count (erythrocytosis).

Outside of clinical testosterone therapy there are many herbs marketed as treatment to improve libido and muscle strength as advertised by marketers.  Beware, science tells us there are no known herbals that can be used to treat androgen deficiency.  Only that the herbals mentioned below and many more like them can “influence” higher levels of testosterone production.  These levels vary for each individual and relative to age.  And even if you use these products there is no guarantee that you’ll receive a benefit and in fact may be predisposing yourself to illness and disease with similar findings related to androgen therapy health risks.

If you’re thinking about a low-T product, it is recommended you discuss suspected low-T symptoms with a doctor who specializes in anti-aging and hormone therapy to address your concerns.  In this way you’ll ensure you’re not just trying various products that promise to:  improve sexual performance, improve mood or memory, increase energy, lower cholesterol, build muscle, lose body fat, and/or reduce high blood pressure (and anything else these marketers promise you).  If you know nothing about balancing hormones and you become sold on a product for which you now feel you are receiving a benefit; be suspicious and concerned and inquire about long-term use and health risks.  Herbs seem harmless enough to many consumers, but it’s what you don’t know that can cause internal metabolic harm.

The most popular herbs sold in the market boast claims that their products influence testosterone production naturally and perceived to be safe.  Four popular herbal enhancer products mixed into blends, or sold individually in high dose concentrations:   Horny Goat Weed, Mucuna Pruriens, Tongkat Ali and Ginseng.  If you want to know more about these herbal products, simply type the word into your Internet browser.

If you do not have a testosterone deficiency problem, it is not recommended you engage in influencing testosterone production without medical advisement and supervision.  Simply put, it is wise to consult with your physician before you engage in any hormone therapy/enhancer program regardless of whether it’s chemically synthesized or a marketed herbal product.

Just from the shear fact each one of the herbs listed, including those that are not, stimulate the release of testosterone by influencing the pituitary gland and testes should raise concern.  These hormonal metabolic functionalities within the body also have a huge influence on many other regulatory metabolic mechanisms.  For example, to increase testosterone production without understanding the risks, especially if you have an undiagnosed medical condition could manifest itself into a chronic medical condition.  However, as stated, it is also true that men need to be within a specific “safe” testosterone range to stay healthy.  Being too low or too high appears to create unhealthy medical conditions and then disease risk for men.

The most common types of illness and disease may occur if testosterone levels are too high, or too low:  rapid heartbeat and rhythm disturbances, anxiety, fatigue, overstimulation, irritability, restlessness, impatience, easily angered, increased blood pressure and body temperature.  Additionally, some herbs can have adverse effects on those suffering from breast and prostate cancer; heart, kidney, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea and liver disease and also weaken the immune system.  Other side effects:  nausea, diarrhea, nose bleeds, low blood pressure, breast pain, depressive mania when mixing product with antidepressants.  Gross overdose: Seizures, convulsions and delirium.

Another question you should ask yourself; if you self administer how do you know you’re not too high in blood testosterone?  Or low when you stop dosing, because the natural production of testosterone shuts down between starting and stopping doses?  Manipulating the start and stop of self administering and producing natural body testosterone is hard on the metabolic mechanisms and overall health if not supervised correctly.

I stand by the statement I made at the beginning of this article.  There is no way man could ever manipulate nature and create a quick results product that would not have some adverse health risk.  To manipulate the physiology through “quick results” products is to potentially break the metabolism, thereby causing other ill-health conditions.

There is only one caveat to low-T therapy treatment for the sake of good health.  That unless supervised by a medical doctor, I don’t believe the benefit of self treating would out weigh the potential health risks that may occur if not monitored.  This is an important observation in caution since a “very low” percentage of men are actually diagnosed with androgen deficiency.  Also, science simply doesn’t understand what damage will occur through long-term dosing especially “if not” androgen deficient because long-term statistics don’t yet exist.

Here is a simple example and something to think about if you’re administering low-T supplementation to enhance your sexual performance.  If you acquire and use low-T enhancing products to fix a sexual dysfunction through a local distributor, or mail order, are you sure that some other ill-health problem is not the cause of your dysfunction and you’re not masking a circulatory/organ disease, or the dysfunction is not caused by another possible chemical reaction from diet, bad food, drug, etc., habit or prescription?

By administering an overriding circulatory enhancer to correct erectile dysfunction for example… How do you know you’re not masking a serious prostate, urethra, testicular disease?  Unless you’re a specialist in hormone replacement therapy (endocrist), or an urologist (one who specializes in male/female urinary tracts), how can you be sure?  The answer is you can’t.  Millions of men will continue to put their health at risk because the market manipulators will not error on the side of caution.  Instead, they’ll promote the benefits and down play the risks.  Why’s that? Because it is a lucrative business model and is not illegal!  Read “41 drugs to die for” and then you’ll be able to see the marketer “method-to-the-madness” for the sake of a buck.

If you do choose to self administer low-T products to resolve a problem, at a minimum pay attention to the side effects listed and get monitored by a doctor.  If you or your loved ones note aggressive personality changes, or any of the listed side effects, immediately consult your doctor.

Alleviate Pain Through Nutritional & Herbal Remedies

21 08 2009

For those of you seeking to alleviate pain through nutritional and herbal remedies there seem to be a significant benefit for those with pains and aches caused through degenerative and progressive pathogen illness and disease.  Certainly, it is well founded through scientific studies that healthy and nutrient strong foods (visit our health repository and read MAE articles on super foods) intake contributes greatly as a preventative measure against illness and disease that lead to and cause pain.  If illness and disease can be defeated before it ever gets the opportunity to become a pain disorder within the body then one has a good chance minimizing and managing normal aches and pain while aging.  Healthy cell development and maintenance of the body at the molecular level requires proper nutrients and is of great importance in keeping the body pain free and/or alleviating pain once a pain disorder is present.

In order to determine a nutritional or herbal remedy course of action that would work for you, you first must understand the concept of a customized pain management program.  My premise is “what remedies work for others may only work in part, whole or not at all for what is causing your particular pain disorder.”  That’s right, what nutrients and herbal remedies work for me in my pain management program may not work for you at all, or have insignificant pain alleviation benefits.  Within my chronicles “Mirror Athlete with Chronic Pain” located within the Chronicles Repository, I discuss customized pain management programs in detail and how you can begin to apply this knowledge to your particular “unique” pain program regardless of pain disorder.  You must learn to educate yourself in such matters in order to find natural cures, super food quality supplements and whole foods that will work for you providing a better quality of healthy life experience.  I’ve also written articles, “Man Made Foods Bad, Natural Foods Good,” which you can also find in the health repository.

Good nutrition is one of the “key” preventative means to a healthy mind and body in order to have a fighting chance at combating unhealthy cell mutations that cause pain.  In my opinion, stressed cells that cause “pain symptoms” should not be confused with long-term illness leading to “pain disease and disorders.”  This is because sick, or stressed cells that cause acute pain, may, or may not propagate other cells to become permanently damaged leading to chronic “long-term“pain disease.  The point is, don’t let the acute pain get out of hand to become a chronic pain disorder that will not go away.  One of the best ways to combat cell illness causing pain is to feed it God’s natural foods provided on this earth.  Note – When I refer to foods I’m also referring to herbs.

The premise that good nutrition and herbal remedies will stave off increased pain disease in all cases, or cure pain illness, regardless of medical situation is not all inclusive, but certainly can’t hurt for a hopeful health or pain alleviation outcome for a terminally ill patient.  For example, there are terminal pathological diseases, regardless of treatment will not abate the damage done to the internal immune, muscle, skeletal, nerve or organ systems, etc., within the body.  Even if a patient has terminal disease with significant pain a holistic customized pain management treatment approach appears to provide a better quality of life outcome than not implementing such a treatment.  When I refer to customized pain management treatment, I’m referring to treating the mind, body and soul of an individual.  The predominant healthy activity components of a pain management program include, but not limited to:  Nutritional-herbal, exercise, spiritual, physical therapeutic, alternative medicine, social and healthy activities.

You can live a better quality of life as opposed to a never ending treatment program that fills your life with inactivity, or doctor’s visits that only seem to appease the aggravating pain for moments in time.  You can also accept the never ending supply of pharmaceutical prescriptions to dull the aches and pains while battling frequent depression, weight gain and other illness symptoms as a result of medicated body rejection.  Or you can become proactive in your pain management program and expand your pain alleviation efforts by adding good nutrition and herbal remedies to the mix.  Also stop bad consumption habits, e.g., smoking, drinking, consuming enriched package-can foods, drinking diet sodas, to include high fat and other sugar enriched foods (read Aspartame the Silent Killer, MAE Health Repository).

Through much research, pain modality and alleviation experiences; I have treated almost every major muscular-skeletal articulation in my body.  I’ve learned to customize a pain program for myself where I believe anyone that applied my pain management principles would experience a better quality of living while significantly alleviating, or eliminating pain.  Although I’ve been successful at customizing my own pain management program, I cannot guarantee what works for me will work for you one hundred percent.  However, I can guarantee if you apply my principles you will be able to enjoy a better quality of life.  This is because I teach you how to use my 25 years of pain management experience and education to apply to your specific pain program using sound & tried principles!  Some of my techniques use healthy daily nutrition, supplements which include herbal remedies.  Of course, you should know by now proper nutrition is a key ingredient to alleviating pain.  As mentioned, the holistic pain management approach must address the whole being; mind, body and soul.  Proper nutrition and herbal remedies (natural cures and super foods) is a big component of the healing and healthy being maintenance program.

The cold hard truth, “You must learn how to become your own pain management advocate!”  But you don’t have to go it alone.  I can teach you how to do this.  The point here, if a doctor prescribes a specific treatment and you don’t receive a significant pain relief benefit and/or the treatment is impacting your mood… Search for alternative treatments to discuss common sense referrals if possible.  Find a course of pain alleviation that works well for you!  If the mind is depressed so will be the body.  Although your body may receive pain alleviation “at first” regardless of pain modality therapy, if you don’t consider incorporation of a sound nutrient program, your illness, or disease “most likely” will continue to degenerate and may accelerate the disease progression.  This is because the body and mind are complicatedly interlinked (psychosomatic).  Our Western medicine and insurance policies and procedures are so decentralized and complicated in terms of pain modality treatment and practice, it is no wonder chronic pain issues are so difficult for the patient to find resolve.   For example, does the patient advocate for the mind, body, or soul?  Or is the best course of pain alleviation treatment a combination of the entire being?  Do our Western medicine practices treat the whole being when dealing with pain management?  The answer is simple, No.

You must strive always to improve and make preventative and corrective pain management modifications especially as you age, or pain intolerances and depression occur.  A customized pain management program is “almost always” in a state of flux.  This means you must be proactive with the management of your pain program making modifications to daily activity based on pain tolerance and intolerance.  What I mean by this statement, you must develop a pain program that addresses all changing workloads, exercise, activity, nutritional & herbal requirements for your particular lifestyle while living with pain.  I address this work load pain prescription in detail, see (http://www.mirrorathlete.com/ChroniclesRepos.html ) within “Mirror Athlete chronicles and mentioned within many articles and home site (http://www.mirrorathlete.com/HealthRepository.html).

It’s what you don’t know that creates much more pain and depression than is necessary to experience.  I started out by saying that there are nutritional and herbal remedies that will be of benefit for your pain alleviation.  I’ve also made some presumptions for you.  Such as, with the correct natural super food and herbal remedies it is certainly possible to prevent illness and disease that would cause pain in a progressed state, slow down pain disease, or abate the pain pathology.  It is certainly possible to reverse or mitigate disease and illness through applicable super food and herbal consumption as case studies have been verified throughout the medical community.  Use any search engine on the Internet and type in Natural Cures, or Supplements and/or Herbal pain cures, etc.  I cannot possibly list all the combinations of potential cures for all ailments.  Only that you should highly consider implementing after researching a nutritional super food, or herbal remedy that may help your pain disorder situation if you have not done so.

There are a lot of personal testimonials, medical controlled studies that show positive results by those that have incorporated these super foods and herbs into their diet while consulting their medical providers.  Primary care physicians that don’t subscribe to natural cure herbs or foods may only provide you pharmaceutical prescriptions.  Pharmaceuticals are man-made and not necessarily in your bodies best interest in all cases.  If in doubt as what to do, pharmaceuticals, or natural cures decision…  Have discussions with your medical providers about taking both herbal and prescription medications simultaneously.   In many cases, supplementation of super food and herbs with pharmaceuticals does not create, or complicate pain, or health conditions.  Instead, pain patients state dramatic pain alleviation results where prescription use declined, or were no longer necessary.

It is scientifically proven your body requires specific nutrients to maintain optimum health.  Imagine if you could find a pain treatment that cures what ails you, to include remove your pain regardless of pathology!   Well folks, it is possible and it happens every day.  Some like to refer to terminal disease remission as a miracle, because in most cases, complete chronic pain abatement in my opinion “is a miracle regardless of disease.”  One must never rule out the soul’s spiritual positive power of healing.  To do so would be a grave mistake in the pain healing and terminal illness remission process.  Without necessary nutrients the body begins a degradation phase prematurely regardless of age!  Think of your body like a car engine.  Without a good air, or oil filters (body equivalent – kidneys, liver, lungs) one might experience tenderness, irritability, pain irregularity in the liver, kidneys, intestines, stomach, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, skin discoloration, etc., due to poor eating habits where toxin builds up in the body.  Through time, without consideration to toxic food consumption the body becomes less efficient at removing the toxins.

The car experiences poor performance, iritic operations and poor start, or out of tune characteristic when oil, gas and air filters are not maintained making it more difficult to remove pollutants from the car engine.  The engine parts like the body begins to experience degradation when organs begin to fail due to toxic consumption habits and improper preventative health practices.  Like the body’s internal organs, the car’s engine components eventually break down due to poor fluid filtration characteristics, air and fuel quality circulation, etc., causing erratic operation.  This breakdown uncorrected within the body creates illness and disease, hence pain!  Your car may still run for many years.  But unlike the car you feel pain and discomfort.  The cost of car repairs at some point to keep the vehicle on the road soon outweighs the benefits of corrective maintenance costs and you eventually replace the car.  Since our body is not a car, we simply cannot replace or remove parts in most cases to alleviate the pain and make the body whole!

It is for this reason; you must look to incorporate proper nutrition and possibly herbal remedies into your diet!  At the molecular level regardless of pain disease, or illness one must understand the benefits of a holistic pain management approach while customizing a pain management program.  If your expectation is to reduce pain through a customized pain management program, you also need to consider the body’s molecular nutrient requirement!   Nutrition, herbal remedies and exercise should be incorporated if possible within a pain management program to have optimal chances at cell repair, or win a fight against any illness or disease!  You may also avoid going under the knife and possibly creating a worse pain, illness, or disease scenario while incorporating such practices within your pain management program.  Surgery should be your last recourse!

Marijuana Addiction, Government & Industrial Greed

23 07 2009

When you digest the information I’ve provided within “Marijuana Addiction “Lay Your Bet! Part 1,” See MAE HealthBlog, www.mirrorathlete.com.  One can only assume, the government is more concerned about retaining control and power over the people.  Let me provide you some interesting information with regard to Marinol (HMO Legal cannabis oil prescription).  A month supply costs the patient, or your HMO health provider $300-500 per month.  Also, the 13 states that allow medical marijuana scripts with a state approved medicinal marijuana card allow patients to grow a specified number of plants per year for harvest and personal use.  If you do not want to grow your own script, you can purchase the THC in food products, or purchase cannabis by the ounce for a fraction of HMO legal Marinol through state sanctioned medical marijuana distribution centers.  Currently, our federal government does not recognize “voter approved” states rights to distribute medical marijuana.  I believe this is because the federal government has not figured out how to control the revenues, which not done correctly will have a diminishing impact on their power and control base.  Or is it our government is concerned about our children’s potential addiction through access of our parents legalized medical marijuana scripts, or recreational health risks, or is it more in line to say, “It’s all about the money!”  Let’s continue the money, control and power assessment of what’s really going on here.

Marijuana consumption does not appear to be dwindling in use, per “The Street and journal reviews.”   I’ve talked with many parents about this issue, received mixed reviews, but on the whole parents accept the notion that legalization of marijuana for use by chronic pain patients should be a voter approved statewide mandate recognized by the federal government as intended by congress passing of the Compassionate Use Act, 1996 and revisions thereafter (see MAE Marijuana Use, Pain Benefits, Part 1).  Aside from state legal medical marijuana use many believe marijuana should be legalized for recreational use, much like alcohol (a social drug with NO medicinal property and HUGE health risks).   Then those that did become addicts could receive help and support much like an alcoholic and prescription addict receives state and health insurance covered rehabilitation and cessation services.

Alcohol and cigarettes have caused more damage to families and societies overall health than our government will ever admit.  To allow a drug to enter the market legally without full government control would begin “a shrinking” of the federal power base by giving too much control back to the people, such as we see in the struggle to bring medical marijuana to market.  Be patient, I will explain this concept very soon.   Please do take a little time and do your due diligence to see what’s going on in the world around you with regard to the legalization of marijuana.  Don’t take my word or insight as gospel with what you are about to read, instead use this insight to “incite” your curiosity and further educate yourself on these matters.  If marijuana was legalized as a recreational drug much like alcohol, I fear much crime, unnecessary deaths, overcrowded jails, addiction, etc., to include tax payer burden for rehabilitative support programs would still occur, “but I believe significantly less than if the drug was fully legalized!”  Yes, you heard me right.  My educated insight tells me if marijuana was legal and regulated much like alcohol many problems in our country would be significantly reduced.  And if you are wondering, as I stated in my medical marijuana MAE video, “I have not requested a medical marijuana card from my Oregon physician as part of my pain management program, although I could; I see no reason at this time to do so.

You see if an individual is bent on self destruction, or is predisposed to become addicted to a drug… This will occur regardless of whether cannabis is widely accepted and legalized as a recreational drug, or solely legalized and distributed as medical marijuana.  This is because children and adults will find a legal or illegal drug when they need to find relief from their stress realities and justify bad behavior through intoxication.  The biggest problem in self medication with recreational drugs (legal, or not), we don’t know whom among us is genetically wired to become addicted to any specific substance, “including prescription medications, tobacco or alcohol!”

Let’s not mince words here, although I’m speaking from a pain patient perspective where I see benefits based on science, the fact is cannabis medicinal properties have been known for thousands of years.  However,   have the potential for addiction, much like our prescription pain killers, alcohol, or tobacco.  Why our federal government released prohibition of alcohol in the early twentieth century as a social recreational drug as opposed to cannabis, which has medicinal properties, one can only speculate the interest in one legalized social, or prescribed drug versus the other, which I feel I know the answer to my own question.  Quite the opposite health effect is true of alcohol; it causes much illness, disease and destruction within our minds, bodies, employment, family and society at large where much statistical information proves this fact.  Marijuana use statistics on the other hand are literally unknown since this is not a general population “legal” consumption drug.  Recreational Marijuana negative impact on society and personal health can only be statistically known once legalized for the general population.

I believe alcohol like cigarettes and marijuana can be very addicting, very profitable and can be easily controlled by our state and federal agencies, “with the exception of cannabis.”  “With all the scientific evidence regarding alcohol and cigarette use health risks, addiction, societal and family harm, why are they not banned from public consumption?” “Or better yet, why not controlled like our legal pharmaceuticals if there is a health benefit-risk aspect?”  After all, when you pick up drug prescriptions at a pharmacy, why are they so concerned about how much you take, while consulting the risks and symptoms to watch out for if you experience a negative reaction?  Since you are not asked specific health questions before you purchase alcohol and cigarettes, does this mean there is no immediate health risk?

Do you get these kinds of questions when you walk into a liquor store to pick up your products… Or when you’re in a bar, does the bar tender ask you if you have a heart, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol condition, etc., before he/she pours your drink?  Is it just me, or is this all fickle?  And why is it so easy for our children to become alcoholics, or pot heads?  I believe this is an easy question to answer. Alcohol in general is accepted as the gold standard recreational drug while marijuana is tolerated as a recreational closet drug.  Remember, there’s big potential money here for our government if they can figure out how to control recreational use marijuana, much like what’s happening with medical marijuana.  Why do you think marijuana possession and confiscation of miniscule amounts have very low conviction and mostly civil penalties?  Or do you honestly believe just because one drug is accepted by our government for sale to the general population it’s better for you?

Many of our high school and college students are allowed by many adults to party hardy to relieve stress.  Don’t parental and societal role model actions speak louder than words?  What do most American adults and teenagers consume in one form or another as a recreational drug of choice (prescription drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana).  Since this appears to be the case, it is very important to understand marijuana will eventually receive full regulation and control by our state and federal governments as they are drooling over a potential multi-billion dollar industry to fatten their coffers, much like alcohol and tobacco has done to grow government services (jobs).  Does it not sound like a money thing to you yet?  “If it doesn’t, it soon will.”  Does it not sound like a nice budgetary balance sheet and debt reducer catering to thousands of government jobs and/or more tax revenues that are controlled by our legislators leading to bigger government?  Examples, FDA (Food & Drug Administration), DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), FTC (Federal Trade Commission), ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives) to name a few and countless other government organizations in existence that want a piece of the action.  Or better yet, new jobs yet to be created by the government.

Come on, let’s be real and smell the money trail.   If cannabis was legalized “wholly” many government jobs would disappear and new ones would appear, hence government control and power shift.  Does it appear our government cares about our children’s marijuana addiction and health probabilities?  No, unfortunately it appears our government is concerned about programs to fatten coffers, grow government jobs, control, regulate and provide penal and other tax-based industrial services while lining pockets of our politicians and special interest groups!  How else am I supposed to see our government’s activities and behaviors regarding any government sponsored, or controlled program, or service?  Think about it, if we become addicted to any drug, legal or not, we pay a price through our societal government controlled systems.  Who pays for the addiction, criminal and penal services?  We the tax payer!

Reviewing addiction studies, predictable behavioral patterns are statistically derived in part from alcohol, tobacco, prescription drug sales, DUI arrests and fatalities, AA support group attendance, incarceration, cessation programs, depression medications, battery drug related arrests, etc., we “the consumer” unknowingly provide the government annual data to forecast a budget.  Many state and federal appropriated dollars are used and paid by the tax payer for these governments owned and controlled services.  This is not so easy to accomplish with cannabis as statistics cannot forecast and justify government tax paid marijuana services to regulate and control recreational marijuana.   In part, this is true because medical marijuana users can grow their own prescription taking away the government’s ability to control and regulate the proceeds of a multi-billion dollar industry.  And if they cannot figure out how to capture and control the revenues, they will not fully legalize marijuana because some government tax payer services may become unnecessary, may be reduced in scope, political power shift wars within government, or shift a balance of power back to the people!

If voters and legislation fail to pass other tax increases to keep government growing and states out of debt, the marijuana lobbyists will continue to capture the attention of politicians, the tax payer and voter.  California is now considering the legalization of marijuana as it nears bankruptcy.  So you can’t honestly tell me you still believe our government restricts recreational marijuana because it is concerned about our children’s health and addiction possibilities!  Or medical marijuana has no medicinal benefit and pain patients should be thrown into jail.  This is ridiculous!  If you believe this, then you should believe anyone in the possession of alcohol should be incarcerated as well!  Remember, in the early 20th century both were used as recreational drugs.  The biggest reason alcohol made the recreational drug use cut is because our government figured out how to control and regulate the money while growing government (Legal history of cannabis in the United States, “Prohibition of cannabis arose in many states from 1906 and onward,” www.wikipedia.org ).

A multi-billion dollar cannabis industry will create less need for “status quo” government services (e.g., fewer incarcerated jail services, policing,  border drug trafficking-smuggling activity, reduced deaths & investigation related to drug trafficking; including less government cash cow industry sales: Alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals, less DEA & ATF services etc.).  These shifts are certain to happen as our government is slowly losing power and control over states rights.  I believe the cannabis industry and Universal health care must be controlled by the federal government in order to maintain its power base due to an inevitable global power base shift.  The legalization of recreational marijuana without federal control would definitely create a downsizing of federal services; while increasing the size of state power and control back to the people!

I believe the governments interest to control and gain power over the cannabis industry has nothing to do with concern for any child that may become addicted, or suffer from any illness, or disease caused by marijuana, “this I’d lay a bet I’m right.”  Instead the governments concern is “how can we control and regulate a product that can be grown on the resident’s property?”  If this is the case how will the government fully legalize recreational marijuana when it understands this means reduced government taxed based dollars, fewer required federal government services, hence power control shift back to the people and state?
