Use Opioids Effectively to Control Pain and Reduce Health Risk

Live life to the fullest and pain free.

Last Updated: 3/15/2019, Marc Woodard

Scientific studies prove, pain relief decreases while pain sensitivity increases from excess use of opioids.

In other words, if you’re a chronic pain sufferer and have used opioids for long periods of time, greater sensitivity to pain will occur. Especially when patients ignore the doctors prescription program.

So you ask yourself, how could taking more pain killers cause greater sensitivity to pain?  “I thought pain killers were supposed to lessen the pain.” This is true if you are following the  doctor’s pain management program. When pain pills are over prescribed, or used in abundance – the body builds up tolerance to them and you feel more pain. The medical term for this relationship is referred to as Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia (OIH). Taking too many pain pills is the cause of more physical and mental pain addiction and increased health risk and accidental death.

Simply stated, OIH is “pain intolerance,” meaning: to become more sensitive to any pain stimulus. How does tolerance to pain killers cause more sensitivity to pain? The best way to describe this is your body produces a morphine like substance (via spinal cord secretions) known as endorphins to alleviate pain when you stub a toe, or slam your finger in a car door for instance.

This substance lessons the painful stimuli experience. If a person takes “too much for too long” morphine like drugs, then the spinal cord no longer secrets the body’s natural pain relief agent.

So when your body hurts really bad (chronic) you no longer have that supplemental “natural” pain killing agent in your body. Instead, you solely rely on your prescriptions.  The pharmaceutical prescription at this point is not enough to provide adequate pain relief. Taking “too many” pain killers results in an overall increase in pain sensitivity because the pain patient now blocks the body’s ability to dose/mask pain naturally for lack of the body’s natural morphine like defense.

In recent years the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) introduced REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies) guidelines to help manage the known risks for pain medication use. This is a program intended to improve upon patient safety, education and compliance to mitigate risk of abuse, addiction and serious side effects through smart physician-to-patient consults.

Once these guidelines became known to the pain patience, there was fear (amongst some) REMS would result in limiting their access to needed prescriptions. This is simply “not” the goal of the FDA REMS guideline program.

Why would pain patients fear such a thing? If your addicted to pain killers and you have a risk evaluation (REMS) by a pain managing specialist, it may be determined the best course of pain alleviation may be to switch pain medications, or reduce the dose, etc. For example, a patient prescribed transdermal fentanyl medication may be reduced dosage by 25%. [Note: Fentanyl is only prescribed for the most serious chronic pain cases and is reported as one of the most lethal drugs an addict could put in their body unmonitored. Death has occurred simply through skin absorption and inhalation]. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic (man-made) narcotic]. A 100g dose of fentanyl is approximately equal to 10 mg of morphine. Fentanyl stimulates receptors on nerves in the brain to increase the threshold to pain.

So when a pain patient has been using Fentanyl to alleviate pain, a reduction of dose by 25% will appear odd to a patient, but necessary to get pain under control. It takes a bit of education and understanding on how to use high dose pain killers safely and effectively.

After REMS application during a 4 week period – with reduced dose – patients report overall improved coping ability with pain sensitivity.

Click on the book image and learn how to control pain naturally.

If pain is not managed effectively, secondary health risks can and do occur.  The list below targets the health risks. If you are a patient on pain medication and experience any of the symptom and signs listed below, contact your primary care physician immediately to get help.

1. Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia – Ineffective pain relief.

2.  Respiratory Depression – Slow rate of breathing, loss of urge to breathe.

3.  Central Nervous System complications – Dizziness, euphoria, drowsiness, etc.

4. Cardiovascular – Decreased blood pressure, edema (swelling), slow heart rate.

5.  Musculoskeletal System – Osteoporosis, muscle rigidity and contractions.

6.  Skin System – Itching, “this may not indicate allergic reaction.”

7.  Immune System – Data suggests long-term use, indicates immune suppression.

8.  Pregnancy & Breastfeed-Neonatal depression, avoid opioid use during feeding.

9.  Ocular System – Constriction of pupil.

10.  Gastrointestinal System – Constipation, nausea, vomiting, bowel problems, etc.

11.  Genitourinary System – Urinary retention.

12.  Endocrine System – Hormonal and sexual dysfunction.

13.  Withdrawal Syndrome – Runny nose, shivering, diarrhea, gooseflesh, etc.

14.  Constipation – Increase fiber intake, and/or use stool softeners will help.

The FDA REMS guidelines are now required within all pain patient-physician consults; providing the patient an excellent opportunity to learn about the benefits and risks of using pain killers. This program will no doubt reduce prescription addiction and secondary ill-health risk factors that also decrease accidental deaths and lawsuits.

Enjoy life with family pain free.

If you now have a problem with addiction and/or your pain is getting worse, or out of control – ask for help and get a referral to see a pain management specialist [Physiatrist].

Through smart pain management consults, education and timely/applicable self-referrals your pain alleviation program will work safely for you. Taking a self interest in your chronic pain and addiction circumstance is important if you want to continue living life to the fullest with loved ones.

MirrorAthlete Reveals Fitness Consulting Trade Secrets

20 03 2018

Updated: 20 March 2018

Marc beginning a 10mile walk in Central CA.

A former client Sid asked specific questions regarding information I posted on MirrorAthlete’s first web site back in 2007. His queries provided an opportunity to share more of the company’s history with readers and reflect on how we got into publishing our first book.

[Sid’s Questions] … I can’t seem to locate your MirrorAthlete pain chronicles I read back in the early years.

“I remember it as a unique informational pain management and personalized chronicles website. Have your memoirs been moved?  ‘Where can I find them?”

“And do you still take on clients for fit healthy lifestyle consultation and customized fitness and assessment programming?  ‘I’m also interested to learn more on how you improved your fitness levels after injuries and chronic pain story.”

A friend of mine coincidentally lives in your neck of the woods. She also recalled like I did, “you produced and sold nutritional supplements under the name of Dynamic Dimensions in Tigard and surrounding cities, while offering 1:1 services in fitness assessments in the 90’s for a consulting fee.”

I’m looking to become more fit and increase muscle mass and lose weight naturally.  But now feel I’m losing ground because of lower body joint pain.  Although I’m working with my doctor and yet another fitness trainer, ‘they don’t have that unique fitness trainer – pain management perspective I understand you’ve mastered.  I see you’re on LinkedIn, FaceBook, and Twitter and now a City councilor in your home town since 2011. ‘You’ve not slowed down a bit – especially after what I remember of your 5-year mobility challenge.”

I do walk miles daily. Best aerobic activity one could perform daily

Marc walks on ave 50-60 miles walking per week.

I also hear you walk on average 7-10 miles daily on a regular basis and no longer take on clients.  ‘would you consider taking on a former client?”

Sincerely,

Sid.

From the Desk of Marc Woodard,

Sid, thank you for considering to put your trust in me once again. You and your friends memory of what I was doing years ago is impressive.

Unfortunately I no longer take on clients.  I found it more productive to put that knowledge and energy into a soon to be released ‘Very Unique’ fit healthy lifestyle book – A fitness and health book like no other… sorry I can’t be a personal coach for you at this time in your life. However once published, the book will be like me being right there with you. Once you begin reading it – some parts of the consulting logic will be very familiar to you – and a comfort for others looking for similar information.

I’ve included the personalized fitness and healthy lifestyle programming processes and practices I used during past client consultations; including industry secrets, client cases and stories; and my personal physical adversity challenge not published anywhere else.

‘Once I became my own client’ – I also became ‘forever MirrorAthlete’ with a renewed life purpose. ‘My job now is to manage personal health and maintain sustainable mobility so I can be there for my family and community for years to come.

To answer your question directly, the pain chronicle link at the old web site contained memoirs throughout 2007-08; I ran that journal for just over a year as I was rehabbing my way back to good health and walk-ability after disease and injury took it away for awhile.

And through that rehab process, I also contemplated sharing that knowledge and much more through a unique fit healthy lifestyle book… useful for just about anyone at any age.

I jotted down those ideals initially in a notepad during a 1999 Mexican Rivera cruise – Four years before injury and disease came knocking at my door.  Little did I know ‘those notes’ would be useful 10 years later to begin writing an impossible book concept.  It was larger than any project I’ve ever undertaken, even in graduate school… and harder to put into words than ever imaged.  I began chipping away at it in 2011.  But really got serious about the ideal of publishing a book in 2012-14.

Now 2018 – “God willing, it will be published this year.”

In early 2008 I decided to pull the MirrorAthlete Pain Chronicles from the original site and placed some of that context into the original manuscript.  But the original manuscript outlined in 1999 read more like a bunch of short stories. At that time I was not well versed in story telling and integration of factual information with personal stories. The project at first was a writers nightmare… “one I dreaded chipping away at most days.”

“I wrote many manuscript versions after the first one, but still lacked an interesting story line that would capture the heart, mind and spirit of anyone looking to self-improve themselves physically, mentally and spiritually – And ‘would want to refer back to the chapters content time and time again as lifestyle changes occurred.”

Unfortunately for me I was more or less a skilled technical writer… not a creative story teller. Two very different and distinct writing styles and skill sets. Learning how to integrate the two, including narration is not something I learned in any school.

So there you have it. It took years of failed manuscripts and grammatically incorrect article writings to learn how to develop an interesting story telling and factual writing style that ‘I NOW know from editorial and publishing experts – the manuscript is near ready for book publication. There are just a few more minor tweaks: editorial, book cover design and reference and citation details to refine.

I look back at those Chronicle posts and early article publications from 2007-2012; my writing style and grammar wasn’t good.  I’m still slowly but surely updating the article archives within our current website. I’ve rarely as of late written any new MirrorAthlete articles.  The latest articles I’ve written is strictly City related and published within our community newspaper once per month. After it is published and released through Tigard Life Community Paper, a week later I publish it at MirrorAthlete for the archives.

My focus is to update older MirrorAthlete articles, write for the community paper [city recreation, fitness and health related topics]; and complete the 10-year book project.

Initially I didn’t plan to start a fitness and health information and articles publication web site based business…  And still wasn’t sure I wanted to write a book since I didn’t consider myself a good writer. Even today it’s still a challenge to write well… the passion that drives me – “I want to reach out to help others that need help losing weight, want to get more fit healthy ‘NATURALLY;’ and are going through a physical or mental adversity challenge and need help with those things.” Including to provide solutions to reverse childhood obesity within K-12 schools. The book is something I know peopled need and want now; and will benefit future generations – It’s really about customized fitness and healthy lifestyle programming for all walks of life.

Marketplaces are globally connected.

Living Life to the Fullest in Portland OR

In 2012 I nearly quit writing after my first manuscript submission to a publishing company.

The publisher liked the content and unique fit healthy lifestyle concept; but recommended I make ~550 changes. At that time the book was a 25 chapter manuscript.

Well hell, “I might as well have just thrown it in the garbage.” The whole thing was marked up in red – “What an Ego-Defeating blow!”

I almost quit writing at that point because the task of learning to write well – “quite frankly was ‘intimidating and overwhelming.” It literally SUCKED if I can say that… guess I just did – “Senior editor has its perks.”

Like many new authors doubting their ability to write well, I was no exception. Eventually I put my pride aside. I had to make a decision, “Quit or press on, ‘thankfully I pressed on.”

Jefferson Library within Congressional Library Washington DC

Jefferson Library within Congressional Library Washington DC

“Oh well 18 years later is better than never.”

… Once I incorporated the principled fit healthy lifestyle philosophy into the umpteenth revised manuscript… “I don’t know – I lost count…”  Everything began to fall in place. I knew I had something special and different than anything else out there in the marketplace.

A book so unique and timely for those desperate to change their lives and live it agelessly to the fullest – even for THE mobility challenged; ANY literary agent would want a stake in marketing it and now I know it.

“This is when the real work began – polishing and revising and modifying it to perfection before publication.”

I chose a specific publishing company to help me through minor book editing, styling and grammatical polishing process. I was finally ready to submit a new and improved manuscript unlike the one marked up in red. This manuscript was markedly and significantly improved from it’s 25 Chapter to a lean 18 Chapter version; with a whole lot more bang for the consumer buck.

The new and improved manuscript fully incorporates MirrorAthlete 18 principled fit healthy lifestyle philosophy based on unique lifetime experiences, client cases, industry knowledge, fitness consulting trade secrets revealed and lifetime education and client case lessons learned, etc..  Now I’m providing this information so it can be applied by anyone. Even those going through a tough physical or mental adversity or mobility challenge that need help in achieving a state of well-being.

MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle Philosophy is based on 18 principled fit healthy lifestyle beliefs [Some of these Principles have been Revised within the 2018 Editorial Process and manuscript soon to be published].

1   “Optimize fitness results by defining and relating to applied fitness practices”

2   “Ill-health prevention through health literacy education can save a nation in pain”

3   “Working muscle metabolism prefers specific fuel mixtures to optimize fitness results”

4   “Due diligence relative to unnatural consumer product use reduces health risk”

5   “Balanced food nutrients support optimum health and fitness levels”

6   “Consumer needs and wants determine marketplace supply and demand”

7   “Removing a bad habit may require a substitute practice to achieve the goal”

8   “Man adds hyper-palatable ingredients to foods that addict and harm health”

9   “Relating to lab results can influence lifestyle change and consumer choice”

10 “Successful Weight Loss does not Require Abstinence from the Foods you Love to eat”

11  “Select Cooking Fats that Benefit Weight Loss, Health and Fitness Goals”

12  “Childhood experiences influence adult habits and behavior”

13  “Commit to healthy habit change & achieve Weight loss goals”

14  “Chemically and genetically engineered foods increase health risk”

15  “Physical activity releases natural body chemicals that support fitness and health goals”

16  “Oxygenate the body, burn more fat and reduce illness and disease risk”

17  “Nature provides what we need to live happy, healthy and productive long lives”

18  “Relative exercise programming optimizes fitness & healthy lifestyle goals”

In ending each chapter I’ve included my Personalized Fitness Challenge Story relative to each chapters content, including client stories and the programming processes and practices I used for years. Which are backed by hundreds of professional referred citations throughout the book.

And to make it even more appealing for visual readers [like me] – there are ~50 unpublished and unique satirical cartoons, including useful tables and forms similar to what I used during my 1:1 client consults. Our Cartoonist John Fiedler does not disappoint. Please feel free to learn more about John and his lifetime work by clicking on Ole Fuzz Cartoons.

Sid, “you won’t have a long wait to hear the rest of the story… and get the consulting information you need and want now!”

Marc at the capital.

Marc as a City Delegate at the capital.

My wife often asks when the book will be released.

I simply reply, “It’ll be ready when it’s ready and not before.”

I’ve also had other writer’s say, “You know Marc it will never be good enough in your eyes.  ‘Just submit it, let the publishers tweak it through the editorial process and get it published… and consider a ghost writer if you need to.

But if I let anyone write any part of it… well it wouldn’t be written by MirrorAthlete.

I’ll admit I’ve become a much better writer and editor now than those early years.  I know the book quality and competitive writing style and consumer value is there. At least the last editorial review I received from the current publisher was more than positive… They inspired me to get it published this year.

It seems I’ve read each chapter a hundred times.  And to tell you the truth the content is captivating to a point where I look forward to a reading it again and again… as I know others will. Often as I read, I still don’t believe I’m the creative and technical writer and author – It’s almost as if someone else wrote it “I have to pinch myself… ‘Yep it’s me.”

I guarantee – The reader will often refer back to it as I have; a lifetime reference to receive timeless professional fit healthy lifestyle advise, guidance and behavioral-habit directional change when its needed to sustain a state of well-being.

And for those struggling with physical, mental and spiritual adversity… I believe the “Personal fitness Challenge Stories” at the end of each chapter will resonate on a personal level; and of great comfort; especially those struggling with mobility challenges, disease, injury, the aging process, body weight, self-image, anxiety and depression, etc.

Now thousands of consumers like you [Sid] will have my 1:1 consulting services without paying a consulting fee and continue to live life to the fullest regardless of fitness or health condition, or age.

By having access to my ‘timeless’ best-in-class principled fit healthy lifestyle insider consumer and fit healthy lifestyle programming truths – “especially the ones the mega-industries hope you never discover, ‘you will experience greater well-being and body image satisfaction never thought possible without paying hundreds of dollars to find these hard-to-find insider consulting truths.”

Sid,

Thanks so much for the memories and opportunity to share MirrorAthlete history and update our readers in search of this hard to find fit healthy lifestyle consumer information – ALL available in our first book publication soon to be released.

I assure you… “I know when the book is published, everything you and others looking for NATURAL diet, weight loss, health, well-being, physical performance, increased fitness and activity levels, and anti-aging information, etc., you’ll not be disappointed.”

“Good health to you and your family!” And thank you for thinking and believing in me throughout the years.

Sincerely,

Marc.

MirrorAthlete Fit Healthy Lifestyle – Book Release Update

3 02 2018

Face Rock, Bandon OR inspires the imagination.

 Updated: 3 Feb 2018

The long awaited 10 year book project and publication is now in the second phase of quality review process by the publisher.  With a planned book release date scheduled in 2018.

Insight into the books content,

Our book reads like no other fitness and healthy lifestyle book in the marketplace.

It is loaded with unique personal, 1:1 fitness consulting and client perspectives; including relative people stories, self-help tools, forms and tables, etc.  Including – I know everyone will enjoy the humor of the cartoons and caricatures so artfully created by cartoonist John Fiedler within each chapter.  If you’d like to see samples of John’s creative works, or contact him click on the olefuzzcartoon link:  http://olefuzzcartoons.com/Welcome.html

The illustrations, stories, lessons learned and teaching points provide the reader with an enjoyable and entertaining introspective and interactive experience while learning how to live life to the fullest through natural and truthful anti-aging principles.

In many ways the content of the book was developed and designed to be a timeless fitness and healthy lifestyle roadmap book.  And best of all – “applicable to all demographics within any environmental culture.”

MirrorAthlete evolved through an exercise science discipline and application within a fitness consulting practice.  We’ve integrated multiple healthy habits and fitness programming concepts integrating and connecting real people stories backed by scientific studies and citations.  Then defined, related and applied these things within a very unique principled fitness and healthy lifestyle perspective.  Our principled fitness and healthy lifestyle doctrine is based on “MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and healthy lifestyle Philosophy.”

The knowledge within this book will allow anyone to succeed in creating a customized fitness and healthy habits lifestyle program without the cost of a professional trainer or specialized fitness and health consultant services or products.

The information you need to know NOW is broken down within an easy to understand format that includes: Best-In-Class fitness and health principles and includes:  how to program a customized fitness and healthy habits plan relative to your lifestyle needs. To include: how to identify consumer fitness and performance enhancement fads and scams in the marketplace that increase health risk.

If you lack motivation to break an addictive habit or behavior; or want to advance your fitness and healthy lifestyle goal to the next level, we shown how to do it naturally while increasing will power to stay the course.

As you work towards achieving the fit healthy anti-aging goal, you’ll do so without worry of applying a restrictive diet plan, or purchasing expensive services, products or gimmick to reduce body fat, build muscle, increase physical performance and get more mobile etc..  We don’t sell hype – only information on how to achieve natural fitness and healthy lifestyle goals to live life to the fullest.

The marketplace is littered with manmade products and services that promise fast fitness and performance enhancement results… “some appear to work short term, while others don’t work at all… And in both cases ‘likely’ increase health risk.”  Consumers will soon learn they don’t have to go the unsafe route to achieve fit healthy anti-aging results at the expense of health – compromised by illness and disease.

We know the marketplace won’t provide consumers the entire health risk truth relative to their unnatural fitness and enhancement performance products for good reason.  “There’s no money in it for them.”

The consumer truths soon to be shared… “man manipulates and injects addictive chemical and genetically engineered ingredients into foods and supplemental diet products known to increase and cause health problems.”  We know the fitness, diet, performance enhancement and anti-aging industries won’t share these truths with the consumer – but we do – we know better.  It is for good reason the consumer industries hope the majority of you never discover what’s revealed in this book.

If you’re tired of paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for fitness and diet product  and services gimmicks that don’t work long term, or not at all… and tired of being overweight and unfit – look no further.

Also our unique principled philosophy is especially relative to K-12 schools.  And if applied within our children’s school curriculum on a national level – It would fundamentally change the fitness, health and medical marketplace supply and demand model for future generations.  This book is a must read for educators, city recreation personnel, coaches, school officials and board members.

The book is an informative, interesting, energetic, optimistic and exciting read in itself.

But more so by way of each ending chapter – there’s an ongoing personal fitness challenge and personalized message by ‘yours truly’ relative to chapter content.  By connecting each chapter principle with real world happenings it is also possible to heal and improve any physical adversity scenario, e.g., illness, disease, limited mobility.

Also those who experience physical and mental adversity challenges can relate and use the same tools provided within the book to help advance any desired fitness or health goal to live life to the fullest.  The author provides a “secondary and continuing personal adversity challenge back-story at the end of each chapter” relative to the books content. Which also covers limited mobility and health challenge improvements through expedient primary care referrals and fit healthy principles knowledge covered within the book.

We ask that you and your friends consider supporting our mission  “Saving a Nation in Pain,” by taking the following actions.  Visit our web site and support us by purchasing a book once released and sharing this information with your friends, family and community.

We’d truly appreciate the outreach support to expand our educational message to put an end to childhood obesity plaguing our youth and saving a nation in pain.

Acupuncture a PsuedoScience or Not – Baffles Many

18 05 2017

Hike the great outdoors – stay fit, meditate and connect with nature.

Updated: 18 May 2017

At one point in my life I sought alternate treatment for severe back pain.  I only did so after all other conventional treatments had failed.

It’s true physical therapy, diet, ideal body weight, prescriptions and exercise do help with weight bearing, pre-post surgery pain relief and the healing process.

But when you have substantial structural and neurological damage in/around bone and soft tissue which includes tendons, ligaments and muscle, you’re most certain to experience varying levels of acute and chronic pain for long periods of time.

For those that go under the knife to correct and alleviate pain, risk of complications do occur.   Under the best case surgical scenario, repair with significant pain relief is experienced – but not guaranteed.

Because of my unique pain story, I preferred to work around the pain centers throughout the body using alternative pain relief methods.  Since there’s no guarantee surgeries could provide a pain free experience… “I ventured into acupuncture.”

At one point in my life I would have tried any type of pain relief modality opposed to surgery.  Whether I believed it would work or not.  And at that time acupuncture was something I didn’t have a lot of faith in “but I was running out of options and desperate to reduce pain spikes.”

My current thoughts on acupuncture – “Ultimately I became a believer.”  I’m not exactly sure how it physiologically improves function and heals at a cellular level.  BUT I do see how it can relieve pain through stimulation of chemical and electrical transmitters in the body.

I also understand our bodies have this “Chi” energy force that travels throughout our neurological or meridian highways.   Where electrical-chemical energy flow can become blocked through illness, disease and injury and creates inflammation and neurological pain.  And when acupuncture needles are inserted at various points along these highways, energy flow that was once blocked can become unblocked.  And when that happens pain is relieved.

Self healing occurs by-way of many life energy and brain, body and spirit activation and lifestyle choices.

In various cultures the energy flowing through our neurological highways is not only known as Chi.  But can be seen or understood as life energy and cross-compared, or liken to Prana, life force, Spirit, subtle and vital energy, etc.  If you want to know more about these things simply google those terms on the Internet.

For me acupuncture worked, “However at first, I was baffled on exactly how.”

I can only explain it in the following manner.  “I think of my body with millions of electrical circuits where one has shorted somewhere, or was inflamed through illness or disease or injury and sending pain signals to the brain.  Whereas the pain signal can be temporarily or permanently relieved through a by-pass, or neighboring circuit… in effect – pain signal to the brain can be removed or neutralized.”  This does not mean your free of cellular disease or neurological damage.

“A relatable analogy would be similar to an electrical circuit that powers a lightbulb.”  If you take electrical current to earth ground instead of sending it to the brain-bulb or switch-ON for pain – In essence the circuit is dead, “SWITCH-OFF” and pain gone.

Western medicine defines, relates and applies acupuncture treatment in the following manner.

“Approximately 2,000 different acupuncture points lie along the body’s meridians. The idea behind acupuncture is that stimulating these points with acupuncture needles or pressure relieves obstructions in the flow of energy, enabling the body to heal.”

“In the Western view, acupuncture likely works by stimulating the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals called neurotransmitters and hormones. These chemicals dull pain, boost the immune system and regulate various body functions (Watson 2017).”

These concepts and principles are easy to visualize through my mind’s eye.  Since I have an electrical-mechanical background and physiological knowledge through undergraduate studies… my mind accepts both Eastern and Western acupuncture healing and pain relief relationship logic.  Regardless of whether Western medicine can fully explain through empirical data the exact healing agents on brain and body function… I accept it’s healing principles and believe in it.  “Belief is half the battle to curing what ails the mind, body and spirit.”  At least I believe this like many others.

Many scientists consider acupuncture a pseudoscience because it cannot be proven through a controlled lab environment why it works for some, not others and why it works at all.  I can completely understand the difficulty of creating a blind study where trial subjects wouldn’t know whether a needle was sticking them for example; while another group in the study was actually stuck.  Plus cause and pain level sensitivities is often subjective and not substantiated through medical diagnosis.

Exercise helps us to heal, stay fit and healthy. Yoga and Tie chi are said to provide similar benefits.  Trying something outside the mainstream to feel well is worth the endeavor.

I believe if you believe something is possible the psychosomatic (mind/body) meridian highway healing connection can be made to greater degree.  That is the portion of brain during meridian stimulation effectively releases electrical-chemical healing agents to a target area.

Understanding these connections and relationship allows those like myself (meditative-alternative medicine believer) to channel the acupuncture stimulant point to target and heal damaged cell tissues, including nerve pain.

I can tell you there are different techniques used by acupuncturists when getting stuck with tiny micro-thin needles.

Many years ago, I experienced two different styles of Chinese acupuncture.  A hard and soft style.  “Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the most common form of acupuncture studied and practiced in the United States.  Japanese style acupuncture takes a more subtle route than TCM.  Fewer and thinner needles are used with less stimulation (Acufinder.com 2017).”

For me, “during TMC treatment the needles were inserted deep into my low back and caused discomfort and aggravation during treatment.”  They were inserted fast and hit damaged nerves frequently with precision.  After needle insertion an electrical pulsating current was sent through wire leads attached to the needles – then stimulated the damaged neurons under the skin.  Eventually this treatment would reroute the pain signal away from the brains central nervous system.

During Japanese style acupuncture the needles were more delicately inserted and didn’t penetrate deep into the skin.  I didn’t feel any discomfort during these treatments.

When I first experienced acupuncture, the TMC needle insertion technique although painful seemed to turn-off a lot of pain centers in the brain for me.  After 10 sessions I called it good.  Although I considered TMC a success, it was during the tenth session a needle hit a sensitive nerve in the low back that caused me to jolt.  This was followed by a back spasm and a bit of cussing “Don’t judge… God that hurt bad.”  I did finish the session gritting my way through it and refrained from further cussing.

Thereafter and understandably so, I had fear of going back for more treatment.  I didn’t ask for another referral from my HMO.  Instead I sought out Japanese style acupuncture to help alleviate a little more pain – as I didn’t finish the referred 25 TMC sessions.

I increased fitness levels and further minimized pain aggravation during acupuncture treatment through aerobic pool exercise.

If you have a lot of nerve damage and areas of the body are pain-sensitive to touch – Japanese style preparation prior to needle insertion is a very good treatment protocol.

The preparation and process works like this: Very light massage, relaxation and suction cup may be used.  They are heated cups placed on skin surface and along meridian pathways.  When cooling cause a suction [or vacuum] – draws oxygenated blood to damaged tissue area to increase blood circulation and expedite healing process.

Thereafter electro stimulation via inserted needles may be applied.  This technique worked wonders to remove more back pain.  Needles were not only inserted in the low back, but other parts of the body to help relieve radiating nerve pain.

To this day my total body pain is very manageable and allows me to live life to the fullest.  I’ve not seen an acupuncturists for years.

I’ve read a few blogger sites on the benefits/to no benefits of using acupuncture.  The feelings on it is a mixed bag.  It’s considered by many who believe in Eastern medicine a natural science that can heal and alleviate pain and may/may not cure disease.  To Western medicine practitioners, many professionals and lay persons at best believe it’s a pseudoscience that’s falls into categories more like magic and faith healing.

Instead of trying to convince you acupuncture may work for you, I think it is best to leave the following thoughts and insight.

What secrets will mother nature reveal next.

Like Pranic healing – modern science does not understand and has no way to prove how acupuncture and life “Chi” energy actually heals and alleviates pain for some and not others.

Or how technique or application  could be improved to be effective 100% of the time for all.  Some would challenge brain capacity, function and control over the body’s self-healing connections have something to do with its effectiveness.

I’d agree “maybe some lack the connective brain function or capacity to accept or believe an alternative healing method outside of Western medicine could help.”  Therefore self-healing through meditation or acupuncture or Pranic healing, etc., won’t work.

Unfortunately unless science can unequivocally prove something… it is open to public scrutiny, personal disbelief and a failed opportunity for whom it could work if they simply believed.

But this should not limit people to reason how the impossible can become possible than believe.  Simply reflect on a few of man’s unbelievable achievements throughout history.

For example, it was impossible for man to fly, let alone sore through space and land on the moon.  Or, until Penicillin as an effective antibiotic was discovered.  Many with serious disease through infection were doomed to die with no hope of a cure.  During historical times, cultural and scientific positions based on beliefs could not think out side of any box.  But todays anti-aging and healing science appears to know no limit of possibilities.

“For the self-healing and alternative medicine believer – Meditative and Spiritual untapped brain function has the healing energy capacity necessary to cure what ails us.”  [MirrorAthlete]

I agree like many of you “science does not know everything about brain capacity and function and self-healing.”  It has long been said people on earth only use 10% of their brain capacity.   This too is controversial due to opposing views of natural selection.  Since the brain tissue has metabolically evolved throughout time, to lose 90% of capacity would have catastrophic consequences on the human regulation of body function…  What if brain capacity increased 1-2% up to, or over that 10% without body function affliction.  I believe this has already been accomplished by faith healers, spiritual mediators and protégées to name a few?  “Think outside that box!”  There’s no scientific proof using more brain capacity to increase IQ or self-heal is harmful to health.

In relating to this line of reasoning – acupuncture and panic healing may open a 2% healing mind-body-spiritual opportunity to increase brain capacity and bodily function to heal damaged cellular tissue and get well.   Just because science can’t prove how brain capacity and body function coordinate above and beyond what natural selection scholars, the medical community and scientists can prove – doesn’t mean self-healing and alternative medicine doesn’t work.

Since most aren’t educated and trained in meditative and alternative medicine and therapeutic practices, if open to the wellness and healing possibilities allow someone schooled in it to help.

Do what you enjoy pain free. Believe!

If you have acute, chronic or severe pain regardless of what the cause, what have you got to lose?  Give acupuncture a try?  What doesn’t work for others may work for you?  You may have the ability to unlock the Chi force hidden within part of your untapped brain capacity reserve and make use of it like I did to restore pain free mobility function.

I believe one day science will prove through empirical trials how and why acupuncture works for some patients and not others.  Then hopefully educate everyone on how to tap this self-healing power.

Like Einstein’s Theory of Relativity “Time was no longer uniform and absolute.” Physics could no longer be understood as space by itself, hence space and time was also dependent on velocity.  Until this time Isaac Newton’s physics and astronomy stood as a 200-year-old theory of mechanics.

Acupuncture is thousands of years old.  But has only been accepted in Western medicine and studied for decades.  What has Western medicine yet to discover about the practice as applied to individual life force healing energy?  Will it take 200 years or more to discover all of it’s secrets?  Who knows.

If you want to try acupuncture and your primary care physician won’t refer you, or it’s not covered in your health insurance there are 3 things you can do.

During your employer annual health insurance selections – pick a provider or policy that covers acupuncture [most HMO policies offer it].  Or, if you have coverage for this service, but a physician won’t refer for whatever reason, request a new primary care physician.  Or request of your primary care physician a referral to a physiatrist.  A physiatrist is a pain management medical [doctor-specialist] and will likely refer you to an acupuncturist if you request it.

MirrorAthlete Book Release Update, Principled Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle Philosophy

18 08 2016
Life's Journey knows no limitations.

“Life’s Journey knows no limitations.” Marc Woodard hiking through the Nevada Desert.

Updated: 18 August 2016

The long awaited 10 year book project and publication is now in final editorial review with planned release date scheduled, 1st quarter of 2017.

Insight into the books content,

Our book reads like no other fitness and healthy lifestyle competitor book in the marketplace.

It is loaded with unique personal, fitness consultant and client perspective, relative people stories, etc., self-help tool kits, forms, tables and satire graphic depictions that support each chapter’s unique content and so much more.

These illustrations, stories, lessons learned and teaching points provides the reader with an enjoyable, entertaining and interactive experience while learning consumer and fitness trainer and health consultant wisdom.  And healthy living techniques that can be used to improve quality of life for decades to follow.  In many ways the content was developed and designed to be a timeless fitness and healthy lifestyle book of how to live life to the fullest.  And applicable to all demographics within any environment or culture.

MirrorAthlete has evolved through an exercise science discipline applied within a fitness consulting practice throughout the years.  I’ve taken multiple client and personal lifetime experiences and fitness programming successes and defined, related and applied these things with a very unique perspective understanding Westernized cultural habits and behavioral impact on health.  Our principled fitness and healthy lifestyle doctrine is based on MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and healthy lifestyle Philosophy .

The knowledge within this book allows anyone to succeed in creating a customized fitness and healthy habits lifestyle program without the cost of a professional trainer or specialized fitness and health consultant service or products.   The information you need to know is broken down by easy to understand principles, multiple professional citations, consumer safety awareness, client examples, consumer weight loss; strength, endurance and competitive training knowledge and wisdom, to include how to identify physical enhancement fad and scam services and products; medical referral insight and so much more.   And most important how to build a customized fitness and healthy habits lifestyle plan and implement it relative to your lifestyle needs.  Then gets you to the next fitness level naturally if you’d like to take that challenge.

If you lack motivation to break a bad habit, addiction or get started with a basic healthy habits program, or advance your fitness and healthy lifestyle goals, we shown how to overcome low motivation by increasing will power to stay the course.    As you work towards your fitness goal, you’ll do so without worry of applying a restrictive diet plan, or purchase of expensive physical enhancement product, service or gimmick to reduce body fat, build muscle, etc.  We don’t sell hype, only information on how to achieve natural fitness and healthy longevity change results which are backed by hundreds of professional citations and client story examples.

The marketplace is littered with manmade products and services that promise fast results… some appear to work short term, while others don’t work at all and in both cases increase health risk.  In the long run addiction to manmade consumables loaded with unnatural chemicals increase health risk.  Consumers need to know, they don’t have to go the unsafe route to achieve these goals at the expense of health.

We know the marketplace won’t provide consumers the entire health risk picture regarding unhealthy, addictive and dangerous products for good reason.  There’s no money in it for them.  Half truth testimonials that promise quick fitness and health results sell.  The other half truth is man manipulates and injects addictive chemical and genetically engineered ingredients into consumer foods and supplemental products known to cause health problems and as previously stated “not popular selling points.”  We expose these consumer and marketplace truths.

If you’re tired of paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for fitness and diet products and services that don’t work long term, or don’t work at all and tired of being overweight and unfit, look no further.

MirrorAthlete Inc., is uniquely positioned through years of practical and scholastic healthy lifestyle experiences and consulting services which enables us to easily expose these hard to find industrial and marketplace secrets.    It is for good reason these consumer industries hope the majority of you never discover what’s revealed in this book.  Our unique principled philosophy as applied to our K-12 schools and healthy community plans threatens to fundamentally change the fitness, health and medical marketplace supply and demand and profit margins model and governmental organizations.

I personally show how to apply these healthy lifestyle concepts by detailing these 18 Powerful Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle Principles [MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle Philosophy ]These principles provide the building blocks you learn to master in order to customize your own fitness or healthy habits program without breaking the bank or your body.

The book is an interesting, energetic, optimistic and exciting read in itself.  But more so by way of each ending chapter there’s an ongoing personal fitness challenge and personalized message by ‘yours truly’ relative to each chapters content.  By connecting each chapter principle and content dots this way, I further show how MirrorAthlete principled philosophy can also be applied to improve any physical adversity scenario, i.e., illness, disease, limited mobility.  Those with physical and mental adversity challenges can relate and use the same tool box’s provided within the chapters to help advance any desired fitness or health need improvement.  Thereby allowing one to take control of their health and immobility predicament and continue to live life to the fullest in the best way possible.

We ask that you and your friends consider supporting our mission  “Saving a Nation in Pain,” by taking the following actions.   Visit our web site and look for the book publication release date.  Then purchase a book once released. We’d truly appreciate the support to expand our company resources and educational outreach message to put an end to the obesity epidemic plaguing our youth.

We also accept donations at our home site to further promote ill-health prevention and healthy lifestyle education for families and communities.

Marc Woodard Reflects on MirrorAthlete

24 04 2016
Marc Woodard Founder of MirrorAthlete

Marc Woodard
Founder of MirrorAthlete, Inc.

Sid asked specific questions regarding information I posted on our first web site in 2007.

This provided an opportunity to share more of the company’s history with readers and reflect on MirrorAthlete moving forward.

Question(s) from Sid,

I can’t seem to locate your MirrorAthlete pain chronicles I read back in the early years.  I remember it as a unique informational pain management website. I can’t find the chronic pain tab at your new site.  Have your memoirs been moved?  Where can I find them?  And do you still take on clients for consultation and customized fitness programming?  I’m interested to catch up and learn more on how you regained your fitness levels after injuries and chronic pain.

A friend of mine coincidentally lives in your neck of the woods.  He said you also produced and sold nutritional supplements under the name of Dynamic Dimensions in Tigard and surrounding cities, while offering 1:1 services in fitness assessments in the 90’s.  You also programmed specialized training routines for a fee.  I’m looking for answers to keep the muscle mass I’ve worked so hard to achieve.  But now feel I’m losing ground because of back pain.  Although I’m working with my doctors and yet another fitness trainer, they don’t have that unique pain management perspective and experience I remember you had.  I see you’re on LinkedIn, FaceBook, and Twitter and also a city councilor in your home town since 2011.

I do walk miles daily. Best aerobic activity one could perform daily

I average 55-60miles/week. Best aerobic activity for fat burning, body tone and muscular endurance and cardiac health at any age.

You appear to look fit, healthy and productive.  I also hear you’re walking over 8-12 miles daily on a regular basis.  I’d like to read the rest of your story and learn how I can get back on track with my strength training routine and other activities.

Sid, your memory of the site and what I was doing years ago is impressive.  This caused pause to reflect on the makings of a company and personal growth.  Thank you for providing an opportunity to share more history and update our readers.

I began MirrorAthlete as an informational site to show how to alleviate and manage pain and still achieve fitness goals.  At that time I was also learning how to write and become a webmaster due to injury and years of limited mobility.  I focused on pain management because at the time I was injured with weight bearing and radiating nerve pain and other issues you apparently recall.  Those Chronicle entries read like a memoir reflecting upon better days.  And how I’d apply pain threshold limits using unique exercise and range-of-motion technique to increase fitness levels.  Then eventually regain my former fitness levels and physical abilities.  We’ll leave it at that… Most of “how” I got through the mental, physical and spiritual pain challenges is now divulged in a ~350 page manuscript soon to be published.

Initially I didn’t plan to make what I started a business when I began the MirrorAthlete pain chronicles.  I only knew I wanted to reach out and help others that were going through a similar physical adversity challenge.   At the time writing gave me something to do, kept my brain working and to remain productive somehow with limited mobility.

I also understood the value and application of continuing education, self-referred physician consultations and medical research data and information.  If there were solutions to be found, maybe I could fix a broken body full of pain.  And through sharing others might benefit.  Then one day I could put that information in a book and reach more than a few clients.  These actions ultimately changed my career path and the way I viewed life and the world.

At the time, I didn’t reveal to most including family and friends the encompassing battle I faced for years working through painful and depressing disability…  Eventually I found natural solutions to heal and much more about our industries, marketplaces, consumers and world commerce.  I also know there are mega-industries that don’t want a majority of you to learn what I found to get well.  Why?  Because it would impact and change generational values, habits and behavior.  In short, eventually cripple their power and control over social, political and economic matters.

Marketplaces are globally connected.

Marketplaces are globally connected economically, socially and politically.

To answer your question directly, the pain center tab link contained the pain chronicle memoirs throughout 2007 and those entries remained until early 2008.  I ran that journal for just over a year.  The chronicles also conceptualized my thoughts on a unique fitness trainer-consultant book. I jotted down those ideals in a notepad during a 1999 Mexican Rivera cruise while on vacation.  A book was one of those bucket list items.  Little did I know ‘those notes’ would be pulled sooner than later to write a manuscript.  It would also become larger than any project I’ve undertaken and harder to put into words than ever imaged.

Love Cruises. Coming back from Alaska. Last stop Victoria B.C., Canada. I walked a couple miles to get the shot, then walked another 4 to the heart of the city.

Love Cruises. Coming back from Alaska. Last stop Victoria B.C., Canada. I walked a couple miles to get the shot, then walked another ~ 3 into the heart of the city.

In early 2008 I decided to pull the MirrorAthlete Pain Chronicles from the site to begin writing the manuscript in hopes a publisher might take interest.  “Why not, it wasn’t as if I was going anywhere soon stuck using a wheelchair, crutches and cane.”  I wrote many manuscript versions, but lacked a creative vision and writing style.  For the most part I was a technical and communicative writer throughout my military and corporate career, not a creative one.  Two very different and distinct animals.

So there you have it.  It took years of failed articles and manuscripts to learn how to connect the industrial consumer dots, share my expertise in fitness and health matters, while writing with a factual-narrative flare to capture reader interest and imagination.  I look back at those Chronicle entries and early publications from 2007-2010; the writing style and grammar wasn’t good but the content had competitive potential.

In 2011 I nearly quit writing.  Those early manuscripts literally went up in flames.  But not the hundreds of chronicle pages I saved in archive files.  Those stories represent everything MirrorAthlete could become.  I knew something was missing to make the connection and conversion from “original MirrorAthlete concept-to-chronicles-to-book.”  Eventually I’d figure it out and the result would be a fantastic educational and thought provoking fit-healthy lifestyle, trainer-consultant book for all demographics and generations.

Luckily one day in early 2012 while on a long walk, a light bulb went off in my head.  I figured out what was missing.  It was a principled philosophy of tenets I believed in, lived by and provided to my clients.  I should have seen this years ago, but I didn’t.

Jefferson Library within Congressional Library Washington DC

Jefferson Library within Congressional Library Washington DC

If I would have taken a philosophy course in college maybe I would have got it sooner than later.  Oh well, a decade later is better than never.  Once I incorporated those principles into the umpteenth manuscript “I don’t know I lost count.” I knew I had something a publisher might take interest in.  This is when the real work began.  The publisher sent it back, you know “my umpteenth manuscript” with 550 change requests.  What a defeating blow to my ego!

Putting my pride aside, I had to make a decision.  Quit or press on.  I’ve never quit anything I began without exceptional effort to achieve a win.  Of course we don’t win at everything in life.  However, I know without trying, you never know what you’re made of and what can be accomplished.  So it’s no surprise to anyone who knows me well.  I don’t quit easily, especially when motivation and passions run high.

Now 4 years later I’ve learned how to write a book, build and maintain a website, edit and publish articles online [a continuous learning process].  I’m now in the final stages of detail required for book publication.  The manuscript now fully incorporates our 18 tenets listed below.  These are the beliefs I lived by as a fitness trainer and instructor and used to develop customized fitness programs for clients.  Currently, my role in the company is a healthy lifestyle writer-consultant for MirrorAthlete Corp.

MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle Philosophy is based on these 18 tenets by Marc Woodard

1   “Optimize fitness results by defining and relating to applied fitness practices.”

2   “When kids value healthy habits future generations benefit.”

3   “Working muscle metabolism prefers specific fuel mixtures to optimize fitness results.”

4   “Due diligence prior to purchasing fitness product or services is wise.”

5   “Balanced food nutrients and activities sustain health and fitness levels”

6   “Consumer needs and wants determine the marketplace supply and demand.”

7    “Removing a bad habit may require a substitute practice to achieve the objective.”

8   “Man adds hyper palatable ingredients in foods that addict and harms health.”

9    “Relating to lab results can influence lifestyle change and consumer choice.”

10   “Successful Weight Loss does not Require Abstinence from the Foods you Love.”

11   “Select’ Cooking Fats Benefit Weight Loss, Health and Fitness Goals.”

12   “Childhood experiences influence adult habits and behavior.”

13   “Commit to healthy lifestyle and achieve fitness goals.”

14   “Chemically and genetically engineered foods are bad on health.”

15   “Healthy lifestyle releases body chemicals that support well-being.”

16   “Oxygenate the body, burn more fat and lower risk of illness and disease.”

17   “God’s universal design shows us how to live happy, healthy and long lives.”

18   “Relative exercise programming optimizes fitness and health and lifestyle results.”

I’ve included similar pain chronicle stories in the book manuscript never seen by anyone including my family.  They are documented at the end of each chapter under “Personal Fitness Challenge.”  The chapters’ content is also backed by hundreds of professional citations which substantiate MirrorAthlete unique principled philosophy.

And to make it a more entertaining read there are ~50 satirical cartoons and tables and charts.  Humor is good for the encompassing being.  And our cartoonist John Fiedler does not disappoint.  Reacquaint yourself with our home website and learn more about the book project and release date.

Sid, “you won’t have a long wait to hear the rest of the story.”

I’ve pushed off the publication of this manuscript for personal and family reasons throughout the last 3 years.  However I can say in all honesty the book is 95% complete.  I still need to perform one last editorial review before sending it back to the publishing house for their final editorial critique.  Also I have not written the conclusion, or finalized the front and back inner/outer cover text and art.

Send book interest and endorsement request to:  marcwoodard@mirrorathlete.com

The book release date was recently listed 2nd quarter 2016 at our website.  Now a new release date, 1st quarter of 2017 has been agreed upon per Corp., annual minutes of the meeting.  I’m very hopeful this new deadline will be met.

My wife often asks when it will be done.  I simply reply, “It’ll be ready when it’s ready and not before.”  I’ve also had other writer’s say, “You know Marc it will never be good enough in your eyes.  ‘Just submit it, let the publishers tweak it in the editorial process and get it published.”  I’ll admit I’m a much better writer and editor than those earlier years.  However the quality of content and terminology must be consistent, relative, interesting, up-to-date, and valuable to all consumers and thought provoking enough to stand the test of time.  These are my standards which I will not compromise and will ensure this book is second-to-none in class.

I know the quality and competitive writing style and consumer value is there.  I’ve read each chapter a hundred times over.  And to tell you the truth the content is captivating to a point where I look forward to a reading it again, as I know others will.  Why? I teach anyone how to apply the skill-sets I spent a lifetime learning through simplified, interesting topics and client and consumer examples anyone can understand and relate too.  Then readers will often refer back when healthy life choices and changes require guidance through timeless literary consultation.  And for those struggling with physical, mental and spiritual adversity I believe the “Personal fitness Challenge Stories” at the end of each chapter will resonate on a personal level and be of great support, motivation and comfort to all who need and want to improve an adversity situation and live life to the fullest.

To stay up-to-date on our book project and monthly articles publication, click on Book Project Details, or 1st Book Release Update links.  Also learn more about topics of interest within our publications repository and/or subscribe to our free self-published articles at MirrorAthlete Fitness Secrets.  Also visit MirrorAthlete FaceBook page and “Like” us and share this exciting book release news.  Follow us on Twitter.  You can also visit our home site.  To learn more on Marc Woodard Bio, visit LinkedIn.

Sid’s final question.  “Do you still take on clients for consultation and customized fitness programming on-line, visits or by phone?”

No I haven’t taken on any clients, instructed fitness classes or manufactured supplements for some time.  My focus in 2007 was to get back to my Exercise Science roots.  First help myself, thereafter find a vehicle to share the knowledge I’ve learned and show others how to live life to the fullest.  There is so little time in life to give something back to others.  I had a story of immense value to tell and I wanted to share it.  A book was the best way to spread these principled fitness and healthy lifestyle truths from a fitness trainer and healthy lifestyle consultant perspective.

Now thousands of consumers will have a 1:1 consultant guiding them in natural fitness, health, wellness, nutrition, well-being, longevity, consumer safety and anti-aging best-in-class practices.  Including hard to find insider secrets the mega-industries hope you never find.

After the book publication maybe I’ll venture into new MirrorAthlete business opportunities.  For now I’m grateful and content living life to the fullest while giving back to my community as a local politician, writer and family business consultant.  I hope you continue to follow us and chime in through social media, etc.

Sid, thanks so much for this opportunity to share more history in the making with our readers.  Also I know when the book is published, everything you’re looking for and more will be there.

If any subscriber has a unique question, or article ideal simply send email to: marcwoodard@mirrorathlete.com and it may be published in our monthly newsletter.

Good health to you and your family!

Sincerely,

Back Pain Relief Wisdom

24 01 2016
Don't let back pain prevent you from places you want to be.

Don’t let back pain prevent you from exploration and activities you enjoy.

Last Updated:  24 Jan 2016

The most common muscular skeletal weight bearing pain typically occur within the lower back for many.  Whereas soft tissue and bone, or musculoskeletal tissue becomes compromised.  Which include nerves, cartilage, disc, ligaments and tendons where localized swelling, soreness and aggravating and radiating pain occur.

Human studies and statistics have shown low back pain will account for more sick leave and disability time than any other single medical condition.  Nearly 80% of all adults will experience back pain some time in their lives.  It is for this reason it is important to understand how to take preventative and corrective measures to avoid, alleviate and timely treat weight bearing joint pain.  Also recognize the difference between common causes of back pain, severity of condition and treatment course options.

Weight bearing and repetitive physical work pain is often medically defined as an acute or chronic pain condition that may be caused by injury, postural imbalance, repeated physical activity and diagnosed as a strain or sprain, or compression injury, or Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).  A Repetitive Strain Injury is also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD).  Which has a compromised muscle-tendon relationship.  Some cause examples of these pain disorders may be a result of the following activities: administrative work, gardening, biking, walking, jogging, running, sports, commercial painting, plumbing, electrical and other laborious work etc.

“There are also chronic nerve compression injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, radial tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. In these cases, the spaces through which the nerves run are narrowed due to inflammation or fluids putting pressure on the nerves (Kriskarr 2012).”

Of course there are many pathological musculoskeletal compromise possibilities which could cause weight bearing or low back pain in vertebra joints.  Some of the more familiar diseases of the back are: degenerative discs [wear & tear on between vertebra space], herniated discs, [swollen, and irritated “overblown” discs], spinal stenosis [narrowing of vertebrae canal presenting sciatica radiating numbness and pain down the leg].

Off Road Trail Hiking Exercise.

Remove back pain and experience off road trail hikes, enjoy nature and get more daily exercise.

Regardless, our focus is not to play doctor or learn all the possible causes of back pain.  But instead to understand how to recognize and prevent unnecessary pain through prevention and seek corrective medical treatment when needed.

Poor ergonomic posture or laborious repetitive work or sedentary lifestyle combined with weight gain almost always put undue stress immediately on the low back.  And when poor work and activity posture, footwear and overweight conditions are not addressed, it’s just a matter of time before weight bearing joints begin to ache, strain and become painful.  If left uncorrected that pain will worsen, slow you down and increase risk of injury and put you out of commission.

The biggest difference between strains vs. “sprain” is the severity of injury and healing time.  For instance sprains are typically long-term injuries which may or may not require surgery and almost always require physical therapy and rest to alleviate the compromised soft tissue condition.

Most of us are familiar, or have experienced a strained [overstretched] or sprained tendon, ligament or muscle.  Sprains are often verified and substantiated using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) equipment to determine exact locality, severity and corrective treatment for tissue damage.  The technology can see the degree of partial or full tear of soft tissue sprain often associated with significant swelling and bruising of injury site.  Whereas x-ray typically cannot and is mostly used to confirm broken and fractured bone and observe bone density health.

Many who experience weight bearing pain of the foot, ankle, knee, hip, back or neck don’t make the pain origin or cause connection.  That pain cause is often the result of musculoskeletal postural misalignment.  Whereas misalignment of musculoskeletal weighted posture starting at the feet cause imbalance and joint instability while walking, working and during exercise activity.  And this condition often results in multiple radiating joint pain areas up the body’s trunk and can cause a painful limp.

Like pain free body posture, A tree is only as healthy as the foundation.

Like pain free body posture without compromised food mechanics… a tree is only as healthy as the root foundation system.

The sole of the foot is like a tree root system.  For instance, when the soil erodes from one side of a soil bank, the tree may begin to lean due to a breach of ground foundation stability.  Then the roots on the opposite side grow and strengthen and absorb the stress to keep the tree growing upright.

Through time the trunk grows slightly offset to relieve stress on the compromised root system, but may cause the mid-line tree trunk to crack or snap during a heavy wind storm.  Similar to upright walking posture, if walking with a painful lower back caused by a compromised foot foundation, if left uncorrected this condition will have an effect on an number of distal weight bearing joints [foot-to-knee-hip-back pain].      Whereas poor foot mechanics like the compromised tree root system make it likely to cause multiple joint pain and injury possibilities.

However it is possible with corrective insoles and supportive footwear to realign and balance body posture and completely alleviate stress and pain of other affected joints, even the neck and shoulders.  In this case the corrective lift at the insole, or bottom of foot may realign the low back and neck vertebrae simultaneously while removing a painful limp caused by sciatica for example.

If any type of acute joint pain condition appears more frequent and severe…. “Pay Attention!”  It is important to remember weight bearing pain is often a result of unconditioned physical body, sedentary lifestyle, overweight condition and improper footwear, or disease.  The good news is it can be corrected if timely action is taken.  Like a tire realignment, corrected foot mechanics can achieve the pain free goal.

Recommendations to treat weight bearing pain before it becomes chronic

  1. If experiencing acute weight bearing pain:  a) “Apply Ice right away.  Ice reduces inflammation and pain.  Be careful not to use ice for more than 15-20 minutes, every 2 hours.  Even though heat is used to ease tension & soreness, heat might cause more swelling in the first 2-3 days.  b) “Place the ice on the painful area in a fanny pack while you are up and moving around.  Apply ice consistently as long as you have swelling and pain.”  c) “If you have diabetes or circulatory problems, limit applying ice and heat to 8-10 minutes.”  d) “Take medication as directed.  Common medications are acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (such as Motrin) and naproxen sodium (such as Aleve).  In some cases, prescription pain medications may help.  It may take 10 to 14 days of taking it as prescribed to be fully effective.”

Note: If you experience any abnormal pain seek medical advisement, diagnosis and treatment from your doctor immediately.

  1. Maintain Ideal Body Weight.  Simply enter into any Internet search engine, BMI (Body Mass Index) use free calculator, enter your height and weight.  This will give you an ideal of whether or not you’re underweight, normal or overweight for your current body mass stature.  If too heavy over normal body weight for height, you’re at increased risk for weight bearing pain.  Most specifically:  foot, ankle, knee, hip, back.

Exercise comes in all fun forms and exciting playtime activities.

  2. Perform daily aerobic exercise to burn fat (e.g., bike, walk, aerobic dance exercise not less than 3/week @ 20-30min/day).  When heart rate is increased for extended periods of exercise, the body’s metabolism during aerobic activity burns more of the preferred fuel source from body fat.
  3. Balanced nutrition:  consume more fiber, drink more water and decrease total calorie intake daily.  Remove high processed fat and sugar foods and drinks.  Focus more on shopping and consuming fresh whole foods more in line with Mediterranean diet which contains plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables.  Avoid fried foods if possible.

Catch it yourself it does a body good.

  4. If your feet are in pain, the likelihood of sustaining daily aerobic exercise activity is greatly reduced.  Seek a referral from your Primary Physician to get a diagnosis and treatment from podiatrist (foot specialist).  See if your foot posture is the cause of your weight bearing pain.
  5. Realize:  a) In order to perform daily aerobic exercise activity will likely require good insoles and footwear to offset pain and lose weight.  b) Don’t pay $300-$1500/year for custom molded insoles out-of-pocket from your podiatrist if you don’t have to.  First try inexpensive insoles at a local pharmacy center if your health care situation is limited in services, deductions and co-pays are high.  Simply stand on a free foot analysis machine and receive corrective insole inventory selection based on the postural hot spot(s) imbalance foot imprint.  And if the insoles remove pain it is well worth the effort and cost.  However, do see your doctor to positively determine pain cause and origin.  If you do get a referral to podiatrist, decide if you want to try the inexpensive insoles before paying the cost of customized insoles, especially if you have to pay over $50.00.
  6. Do you need surgery or other treatment? Ask your doctor about Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS).  “Electrical nerve stimulation is a procedure that uses an electrical current to treat chronic pain. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) are two types of electrical nerve stimulation. In either case a small pulse generator sends electrical stimuli that interfere nerve impulses to alleviate the pain (WebMD 2014). Reports show SCS use results in: 84% reported that their quality of life was improved or greatly improved, 77% had good or excellent pain relief, and 82% decreased their use of pain medications (St. Jude Medical 2016).

  7. “Tens Therapy” electro muscular-stimulation can provide significant relief.  Ask your doctor about obtaining a Tens unit through health care coverage, or if covered to receive electro muscular-stimulation physical therapy sessions.  “Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy sometimes used to treat localized or regional pain. During TENS therapy, electrodes deliver electrical impulses to nearby nerve pathways — which can help control or relieve some types of pain. TENS is often used to treat osteoarthritis and chronic and postoperative pain (Thompson 2014).”
  8. Tens units can also be purchased on-line, or provided by HMO.
  9. Acupuncture – “May also reduce chances of chronic back pain from occurring.  “One of the largest studies to date on acupuncture and chronic pain — a meta-analysis of 29 well-conducted studies involving nearly 18,000 patients and published in October 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine — found that acupuncture is effective for treating chronic pain and therefore is a reasonable referral option (Palermo 2015).”

If acute back, or any joint pain seems abnormal or Intolerable, or you’ve recently experienced an injury consult your physician immediately for diagnosis and treatment.
