The long awaited 10 year book project and publication is now in final editorial review with planned release date scheduled, 1st quarter of 2017.

Insight into the books content,

Our book reads like no other fitness and healthy lifestyle competitor book in the marketplace.

It is loaded with unique personal, fitness consultant and client perspective, relative people stories, etc., self-help tool kits, forms, tables and satire graphic depictions that support each chapter’s unique content and so much more.

These illustrations, stories, lessons learned and teaching points provides the reader with an enjoyable, entertaining and interactive experience while learning consumer and fitness trainer and health consultant wisdom.  And healthy living techniques that can be used to improve quality of life for decades to follow.  In many ways the content was developed and designed to be a timeless fitness and healthy lifestyle book of how to live life to the fullest.  And applicable to all demographics within any environment or culture.

MirrorAthlete has evolved through an exercise science discipline applied within a fitness consulting practice throughout the years.  I’ve taken multiple client and personal lifetime experiences and fitness programming successes and defined, related and applied these things with a very unique perspective understanding Westernized cultural habits and behavioral impact on health.  Our principled fitness and healthy lifestyle doctrine is based on MirrorAthlete® Principled Fitness and healthy lifestyle Philosophy .

The knowledge within this book allows anyone to succeed in creating a customized fitness and healthy habits lifestyle program without the cost of a professional trainer or specialized fitness and health consultant service or products.   The information you need to know is broken down by easy to understand principles, multiple professional citations, consumer safety awareness, client examples, consumer weight loss; strength, endurance and competitive training knowledge and wisdom, to include how to identify physical enhancement fad and scam services and products; medical referral insight and so much more.   And most important how to build a customized fitness and healthy habits lifestyle plan and implement it relative to your lifestyle needs.  Then gets you to the next fitness level naturally if you’d like to take that challenge.

If you lack motivation to break a bad habit, addiction or get started with a basic healthy habits program, or advance your fitness and healthy lifestyle goals, we shown how to overcome low motivation by increasing will power to stay the course.    As you work towards your fitness goal, you’ll do so without worry of applying a restrictive diet plan, or purchase of expensive physical enhancement product, service or gimmick to reduce body fat, build muscle, etc.  We don’t sell hype, only information on how to achieve natural fitness and healthy longevity change results which are backed by hundreds of professional citations and client story examples.

The marketplace is littered with manmade products and services that promise fast results… some appear to work short term, while others don’t work at all and in both cases increase health risk.  In the long run addiction to manmade consumables loaded with unnatural chemicals increase health risk.  Consumers need to know, they don’t have to go the unsafe route to achieve these goals at the expense of health.

We know the marketplace won’t provide consumers the entire health risk picture regarding unhealthy, addictive and dangerous products for good reason.  There’s no money in it for them.  Half truth testimonials that promise quick fitness and health results sell.  The other half truth is man manipulates and injects addictive chemical and genetically engineered ingredients into consumer foods and supplemental products known to cause health problems and as previously stated “not popular selling points.”  We expose these consumer and marketplace truths.

If you’re tired of paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for fitness and diet products and services that don’t work long term, or don’t work at all and tired of being overweight and unfit, look no further.

MirrorAthlete Inc., is uniquely positioned through years of practical and scholastic healthy lifestyle experiences and consulting services which enables us to easily expose these hard to find industrial and marketplace secrets.    It is for good reason these consumer industries hope the majority of you never discover what’s revealed in this book.  Our unique principled philosophy as applied to our K-12 schools and healthy community plans threatens to fundamentally change the fitness, health and medical marketplace supply and demand and profit margins model and governmental organizations.

Candida Free

22 07 2016

When the body feels good, enjoying a day in paradise is the icing on the cake.

Last Updated:  7/22/16

Candida is no longer the diagnostic mystery and treatment challenge it once was in the past. But if you suspect you have it or suffer from Candida, in order to relate and apply appropriate treatment, it first must be defined.

Wikipedia and other on-line dictionaries alike define candida as “a genus of yeasts and is the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide.” Whereas gut bacterial imbalance occur and infectious fungi culminate with potential to cause any number of illness and disease within the body. Thankfully many yeast and bacteria species are harmless commensals [i.e., different organisms that co-exist without harm or benefit to the other].

And where these microorganism colonies are often referred to as endosymbionts [i.e., microorganisms or bacteria that live in cells or body]; or gut flora [gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota].

When mucosal barriers are disrupted and produce mucous: e.g., inflammation of digestive, genital…vaginal tissue, urinary tracts and mouth; or immune system becomes compromised health risk increases.

Mucosal “Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts that belong to the genus Candida. ‘There are over 20 species of Candida yeasts that can cause infection in humans, the most common of which is Candida albicans. Candida yeasts normally live on the skin and mucous membranes without causing infection; however, overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop. Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected. (CDC 2015)”

When Candida yeast microorganisms overwhelm our immune system it is likely the result of an alkaline environment caused by an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the gut. This often leads to overgrowth of a fungal colony species that can inflame and infect tissue at its origin, or spread somewhere else in the body, or infect others.

For example, when the fungal infection of thrush overgrows on the mouth, tongue or throat the slightly raised patches on the mucous membrane and beneath it are usually raw and bleeding.

Eat less processed foods and more whole foods.

Eat less processed foods and more whole foods.

Thrush is defined as “Oral thrush — also called oral candidiasis (kan-dih-DIE-uh-sis) — is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth. ‘Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. Sometimes oral thrush may spread to the roof of your mouth, your gums or tonsils, or the back of your throat (Mayo Clinic 2016).”

Even a newborn can get the disease if the mother had a vaginal yeast infection during delivery. Since newborns have an imperfect and immature balance of bacteria; and elderly with suppressed immune systems and medical conditions are more susceptible to infection of tissue.

Although not typically contagious between toddlers, if a child with thrush has put a toy in mouth and another shares that toy in the same way, then the risk is higher of contracting the disease. Or if an adult handles dentures for example. Whereas that object is handled by someone else and put into their mouth.  (WebMD 2014).  Or you share a toothbrush or drink out of the same cup, etc.

If the Candida albican yeast overtakes the bacteria balance of the stomach and small intestines and then becomes present in the large intestines, this is a sign your system is fighting a battle it can’t win unless something changes. If lifestyle change and treatment course are not applied at some point systemic bodily infection may occur. And when the immune system is suppressed or in a weakened state any number of ill-health condition(s) may manifest.

Below are 18 illness and disease risks with connection to increased Candida yeast through unhealthy bacterial gut balance and increased fungi growth preceded by inflammation and infection.

“1. Acne or psoriasis 2. Allergies 3. Diabetes 4. Digestive disorders that cause gas, bloating, colitis or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) 5. Ear infections 6. Emotional upsets and depression 7. Energy imbalances or insomnia 8. Hormonal problems 9. Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) 10. Hypoglycemia 11. Hypothyroidism 12. Lung problems 13. Obesity 14. Pollen allergies 15. Reproductive Organ Disorders 16. Sensitivities to foods, chemicals, and/or molds 17. Susceptibility to viruses, bacteria, and other infections. 18. Thyroid.” “Some practitioners believe that Candida overgrowth can lead to onset of chronic illnesses: Chronic fatigue symptom (CFS), fibromyalgia, Epstein-Barr virus, lupus, multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, cancer, and autism (Jordan 2016).”

Kayak Pose

When free of Illness and disease we live life to the fullest.

Simply by examining one of these diseases in a study, it is possible to see how a fungi infection starting in the gut could cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), or any other ill-health condition. This is explained by Professor Maureen Hanson, of molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y.

She states, “Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have a different profile of bacterial species in their gut microbiome than healthy individuals,” “In the small study, she and her colleagues found that people with chronic fatigue syndrome had less diversity or different types of bacteria, compared to healthy people without chronic fatigue syndrome. People with chronic fatigue syndrome also had more species of bacteria that promote inflammation and fewer bacteria that dampen inflammation, the researchers found (Doheny 2015).”

Professor Hanson describes balance of certain bacterial species is essential at keeping inflammatory and anti-inflammatory bacterial colonies and infectious fungi concentration under control. And one way to do this is by adding probiotics to the daily diet. Normalizing and sustaining an acidic gut environment helps to keep candida yeast at bay.

IMG_20130405_174935

Choose fresh poultry, meat and fish over processed foods to support balanced healthy gut bacteria.

“So returning your stomach to its normal acidity helps to restrain the Candida overgrowth.” A gut acidity environment is essential for healthy balance of gut flora. Healthy diet and “Probiotics are a great supplement to take whether you have a Candida overgrowth or not. They help with digestion and maintain a healthy balance of gut flora in your digestive tract, so you should consider making probiotics a part of your routine (Perfect Health 2016).

“Compelling new studies are showing how probiotics can help keep healthy people healthy. One study showed a decreased incidence of common infectious diseases among kids in day care.”
— Dr. Mary Ellen Sanders,
Probiotics Specialist

“Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes disease. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy (DiLonardo 2014).

Evidence from clinical research demonstrates that adding ‘good’ bacteria to the diet promotes a healthy digestive and immune system.”
— Dr. Allan Walker,
Professor of Nutrition and Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School

Dietary Recommendation

Avoid the following foods that create an alkaline gut environment where Candia yeast can thrive.

IMG_20130405_175411

Remove sugar from the diet

All sugars, baked goods, breads, refined flour, alcohol, vinegars, pickled vegetable, dried fruits, cheeses, mushrooms. Candida depends on sugar to survive. Cut off the food source and you’ll starve-kill the fungus. Also check food labels for fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, mannitol, sorbitol and sucrose. Avoid honey, maple syrup and molasses. Remove processed and packaged foods from your diet (high in sugars).

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts and seeds, eggs, yogurt,

Chose to consume more fruits and vegetables

meats, fish, poultry, oils such as olive, sesame, flaxseed and sunflower, butter and lemon.

Supplemental Protection

Consider taking probiotic supplements as previously stated beneficial to good health by the experts.

“Taking probiotics is a habit that can really benefit the digestive system, which is intricately connected to our overall health.”
— Dr. Michael F. Roizen,
New York Times best-selling author, Chief Wellness Officer, Cleveland Clinic

Healthy Immune System through Exercise

“Exercise stimulates the lymphatic system, which is responsible for removing waste products from your cells. When it is functioning poorly, viruses, bacteria and fungi can accumulate in the system, creating a great breeding area for

Exploring a beach is fun and adventurous exercise activity and gets the blood pumping.

Candida. Moving your body increases circulation of the lymph fluid, eliminating these pests quickly before they become a problem (Perfect Health 2016).

Treatment for itching, irritation and inflammation

Although there are many remedies and treatments listed on the Internet and books, I highly recommend you seek treatment for symptoms by a Digestive Health Specialist (Gastroenterology), or board certified Internal Medicine physician with a specialty in Candida diagnosis, treatment and other medical and dietary referral experience.

If you don’t apply relative treatment you may cause more discomfort and exasperate or hasten a state of infection to acute or systemic chronic disease.

Once diagnosed and treating Candida, it can take months to years to remove it. And it may take a combination of specific medical treatment, diet, exercise, and pre/probiotic supplementation, etc.

Candida can be treated and reversed. However what may work for others may not work for you. This is why it’s so important to receive accurate diagnosis and timely treatment prescription from a licensed and board certified medical doctor.

Consumer Plastics and Child-Adult Health Risk

24 02 2016

Wear protective masks and circulate fresh air into construction work space.

Last Updated:  24 Feb 2016

I know just about everyone has experienced a funky taste when drinking out of a plastic bottle and familiar with odors produced by a new car smell.   Not only should consumers be aware of health risk associated with the plastics we store foods in, but also the off-gases polymer plastics emit from home furnishings, remodeled homes and during construction.

If you’re not aware, virtually all plastics and polymer products have an absorption effect on the body when consumed or when concentrated in the air we breathe.  The two key chemicals from these plastics that leach into stored food, drink containers, or off-gas into our air environment are “Phthalates” (pronounced “thalates”) and “bisphenol A” (BPA).

IMG_0055[1]

Many are unaware new furniture and carpet are made of polymer fibers that off-gas.

Off-gassing of products occur from many types of plastics and rubber compounds and products our comforts have become dependent upon.  A study in 2004 by Silent Spring Institute, Newton, Mass., and Harvard University’s School of Public Health found phthalates in the dust and air of every 120 homes they tested.  This is not so hard to believe since homes are furnished, remodeled and built using a large variety of polymer plastics, synthetic fabrics and solvent compounds of organic and bonded polymer resin blends.

As of 2010 the market was still dominated by high-phthalate materials used in everyday consumer products including but not limited to: medical equipment, pharmaceutical pills, computer technology, food containers, cosmetics, vinyl upholstery, floor tiles and carpet, furniture, drapery, children’s toys, drink bottles, feeding containers, cleaning materials and adhesive compounds etc.

The good news is consumer awareness advocates, medical and health groups, including Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention continue to provide multiple epidemiological data points on phthalates absorption including respiratory concerns which has forced many producers to use non-phthalate plasticizers.  What is a plasticizer?  “Plasticizer is an additive used to make plastic more flexible.  Additives are chemical substances which when incorporated into polymer changes physical and bulk properties (Answers 2016).”  This is necessary because plastics require softening of the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) molecular chain to apply a desirable structural characteristic for a particular application.  This moldable or desired effect is also known as Polymerization of plastic.  This metamorphosis of rubber and plastic is possible by adding identical monomer resins that bond and strengthen a material from its organic petroleum or synthetic materials state (Plastics 2014).  The most widely used polyethylene plastics are within the packaging and plastic bags industries.

IMG_0045[1]

Some plastic containers are high in BPA and Phthalate. See Recommendations at end of article to determine the good from bad.

However the bad news show us how these chemicals can absorb and store themselves within adipose (fat) tissue.  And at some point “can” act as an endocrine disrupter.  “Because phthalate plasticizers are not chemically bound to PVC, they can easily leach and evaporate into food or the atmosphere.”  Stored products within plastic containers high in BPA and Phthalate concentrate are susceptible to this chemical leaching effect.  Especially “fatty foods such as milk, butter, and meats are a major source (Wikipedia 2016).”  As stated, these chemicals can have a negative impact on the endocrine (hormone) systems which are critical to (1) Total body metabolism (2) Growth, and (3) Reproduction.  These substances also appear to have a connection to obesity and diabetes, including any other number of ill-health effects.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have studied plastics leaching effects on the brains of fetuses, babies and children and determine there is some risk.  Whereas the chemical industry claims BPA poses “no threat” to humans.  However keep in mind both groups have their own interests at stake.  One way to put these opposing views into perspective, consumers simply need to recall a few consumer safety and commission reports on-topic not so long ago.

IMG_0051[1]

Yes their cute and cuddly but not necessarily safe for infants and toddlers.

For instance, “in response to a 1998 Consumer Product Safety Commission request, retailers including Kmart, Sears, Target, Toys “R” Us, and Wal-Mart stopped selling heavily mouthed baby products with phthalates and 7 manufacturers removed the harmful plastic compounds from production.  Recall phthalates found in toys are used as a plastic softener in polyvinyl chloride also known as PVC or vinyl to achieve the desired toy attributes.

Some PVC toys may be labeled with a V or #3 inside the chasing arrows triangle usually located on the bottom of a product.  Most won’t be labeled at all.  Generally, if a toy is a squishy plastic—like rubber duckies and baby dolls—or if it has highly flexible plastic as a component—like the clear pages in child “photo albums,” the clear plastic purses that some girl’s toys are sold in, or the plastic-like “fabric” used on some dolls—you should avoid it or call the manufacturer to ask if the product is made with PVC or phthalates (PBS 2008).

Also the rate of leaching effect of BPA into infant formulae from plastic baby bottles is of concern after heating it.  “We found that drinking cold liquids from polycarbonate bottles for just one week increased urinary BPA levels by more than two-thirds.  If you heat those bottles, as is the case with baby bottles, we would expect the levels to be considerably higher. This would be of concern since infants may be particularly susceptible to BPA’s endocrine-disrupting potential,” said Karin B. Michel’s, associate professor of epidemiology at HSPH and Harvard Medical School and senior author of the study (Harvard T.H. Chan 2009).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “show BPA is present in humans at levels found harmful in laboratory studies!”  Since BPA and Phthalates absorption and respiratory contact appear to be unavoidable in developed countries there are some preventative measures consumers can take to reduce exposure.

To mitigate health risk of plastics, rubber and sealant polymer materials made with “Phthalates” and “bisphenol A” (BPA) chemicals, the following preventative and proactive measures will help.

Recommendations:

-Baby bottles – Select bottles made from glass or a safe non-polycarbonate plastic.

-Avoid washing plastic dishware with harsh dish soap and hot water.

-Find “PVC-free” on the labels of soft plastic toys and tethers.  Choose wooden toys as another option.

IMG_0054[1]

Almost all plastic drinking containers are marked to show a plastics grade quality.

-Do not purchase plastic containers with “PC” stamp. Or plastics numbered, #3, #7.

-Choose plastics, #1, 2, or #5 in the recycle triangle.  Do not heat beverages in plastic containers.

-BPA can leach from metal cans lined with polymers.  Buy all baby food products in glass containers.  Use canned and bottled plastics food and drinks well before expiration date.

-Choose metal utensils, enamel, or ceramic plates for feeding that are also microwave safe.

-Avoid foods wrapped in plastics, such as meats and cheeses.  Buy deli products wrapped in paper.  Use stainless steel and glass drinking containers.

Plastic food wraps are used extensively to sell all kinds of fresh food products.

-Ensure home ventilation systems are clean and 10% outdoor air intake is circulated into the home or business environment.  For example, I have two windows in my house I leave open approximately 2 inches 24×7.  One on the lower and upper floor.  This reduces off-gas concentrations of home polymer plastic chemicals off-gassing within home environment.

-Consider buying used as opposed to new car.  Or keep windows down a quarter inch to remove new car smell when parked or driving.

IMG_0042[1]

Solvent and glue petroleum based products are essential to the home remodel and construction industries and off-gas chemicals.

-When using caulking, glues or installing new carpet, floor tile, siding or concrete pad ensure outdoor air circulation is abundant.  Then aerate space adequately during cure times.  Then get into the practice of the open window concept previously mentioned.

Back Pain Relief Wisdom

24 01 2016
Don't let back pain prevent you from places you want to be.

Don’t let back pain prevent you from exploration and activities you enjoy.

Last Updated:  24 Jan 2016

The most common muscular skeletal weight bearing pain typically occur within the lower back for many.  Whereas soft tissue and bone, or musculoskeletal tissue becomes compromised.  Which include nerves, cartilage, disc, ligaments and tendons where localized swelling, soreness and aggravating and radiating pain occur.

Human studies and statistics have shown low back pain will account for more sick leave and disability time than any other single medical condition.  Nearly 80% of all adults will experience back pain some time in their lives.  It is for this reason it is important to understand how to take preventative and corrective measures to avoid, alleviate and timely treat weight bearing joint pain.  Also recognize the difference between common causes of back pain, severity of condition and treatment course options.

Weight bearing and repetitive physical work pain is often medically defined as an acute or chronic pain condition that may be caused by injury, postural imbalance, repeated physical activity and diagnosed as a strain or sprain, or compression injury, or Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).  A Repetitive Strain Injury is also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD).  Which has a compromised muscle-tendon relationship.  Some cause examples of these pain disorders may be a result of the following activities: administrative work, gardening, biking, walking, jogging, running, sports, commercial painting, plumbing, electrical and other laborious work etc.

“There are also chronic nerve compression injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, radial tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. In these cases, the spaces through which the nerves run are narrowed due to inflammation or fluids putting pressure on the nerves (Kriskarr 2012).”

Of course there are many pathological musculoskeletal compromise possibilities which could cause weight bearing or low back pain in vertebra joints.  Some of the more familiar diseases of the back are: degenerative discs [wear & tear on between vertebra space], herniated discs, [swollen, and irritated “overblown” discs], spinal stenosis [narrowing of vertebrae canal presenting sciatica radiating numbness and pain down the leg].

Off Road Trail Hiking Exercise.

Remove back pain and experience off road trail hikes, enjoy nature and get more daily exercise.

Regardless, our focus is not to play doctor or learn all the possible causes of back pain.  But instead to understand how to recognize and prevent unnecessary pain through prevention and seek corrective medical treatment when needed.

Poor ergonomic posture or laborious repetitive work or sedentary lifestyle combined with weight gain almost always put undue stress immediately on the low back.  And when poor work and activity posture, footwear and overweight conditions are not addressed, it’s just a matter of time before weight bearing joints begin to ache, strain and become painful.  If left uncorrected that pain will worsen, slow you down and increase risk of injury and put you out of commission.

The biggest difference between strains vs. “sprain” is the severity of injury and healing time.  For instance sprains are typically long-term injuries which may or may not require surgery and almost always require physical therapy and rest to alleviate the compromised soft tissue condition.

Most of us are familiar, or have experienced a strained [overstretched] or sprained tendon, ligament or muscle.  Sprains are often verified and substantiated using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) equipment to determine exact locality, severity and corrective treatment for tissue damage.  The technology can see the degree of partial or full tear of soft tissue sprain often associated with significant swelling and bruising of injury site.  Whereas x-ray typically cannot and is mostly used to confirm broken and fractured bone and observe bone density health.

Many who experience weight bearing pain of the foot, ankle, knee, hip, back or neck don’t make the pain origin or cause connection.  That pain cause is often the result of musculoskeletal postural misalignment.  Whereas misalignment of musculoskeletal weighted posture starting at the feet cause imbalance and joint instability while walking, working and during exercise activity.  And this condition often results in multiple radiating joint pain areas up the body’s trunk and can cause a painful limp.

Like pain free body posture, A tree is only as healthy as the foundation.

Like pain free body posture without compromised food mechanics… a tree is only as healthy as the root foundation system.

The sole of the foot is like a tree root system.  For instance, when the soil erodes from one side of a soil bank, the tree may begin to lean due to a breach of ground foundation stability.  Then the roots on the opposite side grow and strengthen and absorb the stress to keep the tree growing upright.

Through time the trunk grows slightly offset to relieve stress on the compromised root system, but may cause the mid-line tree trunk to crack or snap during a heavy wind storm.  Similar to upright walking posture, if walking with a painful lower back caused by a compromised foot foundation, if left uncorrected this condition will have an effect on an number of distal weight bearing joints [foot-to-knee-hip-back pain].      Whereas poor foot mechanics like the compromised tree root system make it likely to cause multiple joint pain and injury possibilities.

However it is possible with corrective insoles and supportive footwear to realign and balance body posture and completely alleviate stress and pain of other affected joints, even the neck and shoulders.  In this case the corrective lift at the insole, or bottom of foot may realign the low back and neck vertebrae simultaneously while removing a painful limp caused by sciatica for example.

If any type of acute joint pain condition appears more frequent and severe…. “Pay Attention!”  It is important to remember weight bearing pain is often a result of unconditioned physical body, sedentary lifestyle, overweight condition and improper footwear, or disease.  The good news is it can be corrected if timely action is taken.  Like a tire realignment, corrected foot mechanics can achieve the pain free goal.

Recommendations to treat weight bearing pain before it becomes chronic

  1. If experiencing acute weight bearing pain:  a) “Apply Ice right away.  Ice reduces inflammation and pain.  Be careful not to use ice for more than 15-20 minutes, every 2 hours.  Even though heat is used to ease tension & soreness, heat might cause more swelling in the first 2-3 days.  b) “Place the ice on the painful area in a fanny pack while you are up and moving around.  Apply ice consistently as long as you have swelling and pain.”  c) “If you have diabetes or circulatory problems, limit applying ice and heat to 8-10 minutes.”  d) “Take medication as directed.  Common medications are acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (such as Motrin) and naproxen sodium (such as Aleve).  In some cases, prescription pain medications may help.  It may take 10 to 14 days of taking it as prescribed to be fully effective.”

Note: If you experience any abnormal pain seek medical advisement, diagnosis and treatment from your doctor immediately.

  1. Maintain Ideal Body Weight.  Simply enter into any Internet search engine, BMI (Body Mass Index) use free calculator, enter your height and weight.  This will give you an ideal of whether or not you’re underweight, normal or overweight for your current body mass stature.  If too heavy over normal body weight for height, you’re at increased risk for weight bearing pain.  Most specifically:  foot, ankle, knee, hip, back.

    IMG_1061

Exercise comes in all fun forms and exciting playtime activities.

  2. Perform daily aerobic exercise to burn fat (e.g., bike, walk, aerobic dance exercise not less than 3/week @ 20-30min/day).  When heart rate is increased for extended periods of exercise, the body’s metabolism during aerobic activity burns more of the preferred fuel source from body fat.
  3. Balanced nutrition:  consume more fiber, drink more water and decrease total calorie intake daily.  Remove high processed fat and sugar foods and drinks.  Focus more on shopping and consuming fresh whole foods more in line with Mediterranean diet which contains plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables.  Avoid fried foods if possible.

Catch it yourself it does a body good.

  4. If your feet are in pain, the likelihood of sustaining daily aerobic exercise activity is greatly reduced.  Seek a referral from your Primary Physician to get a diagnosis and treatment from podiatrist (foot specialist).  See if your foot posture is the cause of your weight bearing pain.
  5. Realize:  a) In order to perform daily aerobic exercise activity will likely require good insoles and footwear to offset pain and lose weight.  b) Don’t pay $300-$1500/year for custom molded insoles out-of-pocket from your podiatrist if you don’t have to.  First try inexpensive insoles at a local pharmacy center if your health care situation is limited in services, deductions and co-pays are high.  Simply stand on a free foot analysis machine and receive corrective insole inventory selection based on the postural hot spot(s) imbalance foot imprint.  And if the insoles remove pain it is well worth the effort and cost.  However, do see your doctor to positively determine pain cause and origin.  If you do get a referral to podiatrist, decide if you want to try the inexpensive insoles before paying the cost of customized insoles, especially if you have to pay over $50.00.
  6. Do you need surgery or other treatment? Ask your doctor about Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS).  “Electrical nerve stimulation is a procedure that uses an electrical current to treat chronic pain. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) are two types of electrical nerve stimulation. In either case a small pulse generator sends electrical stimuli that interfere nerve impulses to alleviate the pain (WebMD 2014). Reports show SCS use results in: 84% reported that their quality of life was improved or greatly improved, 77% had good or excellent pain relief, and 82% decreased their use of pain medications (St. Jude Medical 2016).

Seek adventure, explore, get excited about life and move the body.

Seek adventure, explore, get excited about life while moving and exercising the body.

  7. “Tens Therapy” electro muscular-stimulation can provide significant relief.  Ask your doctor about obtaining a Tens unit through health care coverage, or if covered to receive electro muscular-stimulation physical therapy sessions.  “Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy sometimes used to treat localized or regional pain. During TENS therapy, electrodes deliver electrical impulses to nearby nerve pathways — which can help control or relieve some types of pain. TENS is often used to treat osteoarthritis and chronic and postoperative pain (Thompson 2014).”
  8. Tens units can also be purchased on-line, or provided by HMO.
  9. Acupuncture – “May also reduce chances of chronic back pain from occurring.  “One of the largest studies to date on acupuncture and chronic pain — a meta-analysis of 29 well-conducted studies involving nearly 18,000 patients and published in October 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine — found that acupuncture is effective for treating chronic pain and therefore is a reasonable referral option (Palermo 2015).”

If acute back, or any joint pain seems abnormal or Intolerable, or you’ve recently experienced an injury consult your physician immediately for diagnosis and treatment.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Aluminum Absorption Risk

21 10 2015

Do processed and cooked foods have any connection to this disease?

Updated:  22 Oct 2015

Why is Alzheimer’s disease the 4th leading cause of death among our elderly, only behind heart disease, cancer and stroke? It also happens to be the 3d most common mineral element on the planet we’re exposed to with frequency.

The World Health Organization to include many other research teams has determined there’s a correlation with aluminum and elderly mental health risk and mortality.  “According to Washington DC’s Department of the Planet Earth, United States and Canadian regulatory agencies, acknowledges a potential risk factor in elderly cognitive impairment. It makes sense, research shows aluminum can produce toxic, oxidative stress in the brain and a brain autopsy study of elderly persons found them to have aluminum levels 20+ times higher than a middle-aged group” (Edward 2013).

But not all research institutions are on board with this cause and disease relationship. For instance, “People exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer’s disease, but other studies have not found this to be true. “We do not know for certain that aluminum causes Alzheimer’s disease.”  The ideal being the possibility those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or genetically predisposed to get it, have brain tissue that absorbs and stores more aluminum to greater degree than others when exposed” (ATSDR 2008).

However it is certain “eating large amounts of processed food containing aluminum additives or frequently cooking acidic foods in aluminum pots may expose a person to higher levels of aluminum than a person who generally consumes unprocessed foods and uses pots made of other materials (e.g., stainless steel or glass). The consensus of this particular study finds aluminum levels found in processed foods and foods cooked in aluminum pots are generally considered to be safe” (ATSDR 2008).

Aluminum is so common within our consumer products it’s also found in city water and everyday hygiene and beauty products.

Other research shows us you are 3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s through the use of arousal anti perspirants and hair spray containing aluminum.  Both entrants into the body are absorbed easily through consumption and may be easily absorbed by the brain through the nasal cavity (Public health reports, Natural health, University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter).

Aluminum cookware such as pans, pots and thermal beverage holders present absorption of mineral risk into foods. And for a pan lined with a Teflon nonstick surfaces this may present a separate health risk concern. It is suggested by consumer safety advocates Teflon may present health risk. However, M3 and DuPont research, show no conclusive proof that Teflon puts your health at risk.

Cookware sealants became a consumer health issue because 3rd party research shows when you get into varying chemical sealant composites to bind-bond-seal the aluminum or copper cookware as “THE” protective “HEAT” barrier may present other known & unknown health risks.  ‘To minimize the amount of aluminum that dissolves into your food from cookware, avoid cooking acidic foods like tomatoes and rhubarb in aluminum pans. Don’t store leftovers in aluminum, because the longer the food sits, the more aluminum it can absorb from the pan. Since more aluminum will dissolve out of old, pitted and worn pans, throw away your aging aluminum cookware. When you replace your old pans, consider upgrading to anodized aluminum pans” (LivingStrong 2015).

With regard to city treatment of drinking water how does one find out “how much” alum, or aluminum sulfate is added to our water?  The amount necessary to reduce algae and turbidity creating crystal clear drinking water from our city utilities dictates the amount of aluminum sulfate required.  If you drink city water, you are ingesting alum.  Due to the unanswered link between Alzheimer’s and aluminum, (some scientists) are urging water treatment facilities use ferric sulfate, or calcium as opposed to aluminum sulfate to accomplish the job. Call your city treatment facility, or water provider how they treat the water source.

Aluminum is also an occupational hazard, “Exposure to aluminum, unfortunately, is common with some occupations like mining, factory work, and welding. Welding can be especially worrisome because it produces vapors that, when inhaled, send aluminum directly into the lungs in a “super absorption” status where it is released to the blood and distributed to the bones and brain. Researchers have repeatedly examined the consequence of inhaling aluminum vapors and the results are grim” (Edward 2013).

Recommendations,

  1. Medical research correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and aluminum is so convincing a prudent person would remove “all” aerosol or cosmetics to include deodorants made of, or containing aluminum.
  2. If you see the word alum (aluminum), on any consumer product, or consumable in aluminum container or cookware, seriously consider an alternative.
  3. If you drink beverages made from aluminum cans, it would be prudent to switch to glass bottled or other container type.
  4. The greatest risk of aluminum exposure at a super absorption rate is an occupational hazard where inhaling vapors presents a serious health risk potential. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should always be worn during working with or around aluminum vapors and where PPE is inspected with frequency for breach or defects per manufacturer safety use instructions and inspection standards.
  5. Contact your local municipality and ask about aluminum sulfate in your drinking water and do check the bottled water to see if it’s simply bottled city or natural spring water with alum.

How Sick Buildings Affect Lives

Best Fabrics of the Day found in old Victorian style shops

Best Fabrics of the Day found in old Victorian style shops

Updated:  23 July 2015

I first experienced the effects of sick building off-gases within fabric warehouse places with my mother as a child. But never understood the cause of those early “bad feeling” symptomatic effects until working as a corporate building services, maintenance and project manager years later. The full context of my personal story will soon be shared after defining “what constitutes a sick building.”

“Sick Building Syndrome” coined by WHO (World Health Organization, 1986) is caused by toxic materials-products, molds, and fungus from associated gas by-product found in many homes and workspace. Whereas the enclosed space becomes highly concentrated with toxins and bad for respiratory and body health. And/or the air intake and building exhaust air handling systems removal of hazardous gases and replenishment of fresh air underperform.

The focus here is to provide awareness to unhealthy environmental air space caused by off-gassing of new building materials, retail fabrics, cleaning agents and poor air circulation systems. However, sick building syndrome and symptomatic ill-health effects can also be caused by out-of-control molds and fungus.

Sick Building Syndrome as it relates to new material off-gasses often occurs after building construction and major renovation. And when material install, cleaning and curing compounds are applied, i.e., concrete, caulking, carpet, paint, glue, drapery, furniture; and where building envelop replacement materials from outside walls and roofs may enter air handling systems; then supply contaminated air to enclosed work and living space.

Nobody accidentally consumed any of these materials, but people still got sick just from breathing the volatile organic compounds (VOC) which are now known to cause acute and chronic ill-health effects. Especially when improper ventilation of toxic air space and material cure times are out of compliance with environmental air safety standards prior to occupancy.

Popular tourist locations may present bad air environments for some.

Popular tourist locations may present bad air environments for some.

All possible side effects from inhaling off-gas materials including home use cleaning products are not fully understood by consumers.  And that’s a problem with chemicals in many of our everyday use items!  [Natural Health, May-June 1993 v23 n3 p54 (2)].

Toxic side effects range from irritation of eye, nose and throat. To neurotoxic effects, i.e., fatigue, irritability and headaches. And asthma like symptoms, dry skin irritation, gastrointestinal problems and more [wikipedia, 2015]. Other acute neurotoxic and symptomatic effects may disorient and cause one to lose balance as I’m well aware.

If you’ve not experienced high levels of indoor air toxins simply recall that new car smell on a hot day. Heated and enclosed air space with poor circulation has a way of squeezing chemical toxins out of any newly manufactured material. When I do drive a new car I role down the windows enough or vent full outside air in to ensure plenty enters the space. Some people love the smell of new cars and homes and not sensitive to VOC toxins. Those sensitive to new material off-gases like I prefer to buy used cars and other natural or organic products when possible and practical. Including purchasing clean green home and personal hygiene products opposed to products with hazardous VOC fumes and where direct product contact may be absorbed by the body’s skin.

As a previous environmental air systems technician and later experienced in building services and facilities maintenance management I learned there is a required time prior to occupancy after new construction and major building renovations. Proper ventilation and cycling of fresh outdoor air allows the off-gas of materials to purge until hazardous toxins are released and dissipated to safe respiratory levels.

There was no greater empathy I felt for those at work who questioned the facilities air ventilation system, which they believed made them sick. My personal experience and connection to this sick feeling began one day as a child and prior to environmental air quality and medical expert knowledge and acknowledgement of sick building syndrome effects on health. Today corporate environmental safety engineers and medical health services draw a sick-building connection to decreased work production and increased sick days, personal leave and disability claims.

To ensure buildings have safe air environments facility engineers, maintenance managers and technicians use preventative practices that sustain safe outdoor air intake and periodic HVAC functional testing as required by OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration).

During childhood my mother was what could only be described as a professional seamstress with a fashion design and artistic eye. She was also an excellent painter and drawer with specialized arts and crafts skill sets.  She brought me to these fabric and crafts warehouses where she’d spend countless hours rummaging through the numerous clothing design pattern-templates and sift through dozens of rolls of fabric, purchasing it by the yards. Including buying arts and crafts materials in bulk.  Yes, these places were filled with newly manufactured materials releasing hazardous gases in poorly vented air space.

I remember asking my mother not to take me to these places. I always felt sick after a short period of time inside them.  Of course, she assumed my ailment was brought about by pure boredom with no medical basis to back my complaints.

Since I was only 4 or 5 at the time, I was ignored and for lack of a better description “I passed out in the children’s play pen area due to the dizziness and feeling of a sick body.”  Once out of the store’s environment I immediately felt better. Since the lightheaded condition immediately cleared after leaving, there was no reason for my mother to suspect anything other than pure boredom was the result of my lethargic posture and complaints.

Yes. Lethargic and boredom posturing comes in all forms.

Yes. Lethargic and boredom posturing comes in all forms.

Plus, in the early 60’s, no one ever heard of sick building syndrome. Or even if air smelt toxic, people ignored what didn’t bother them. And for those affected were described by the unaffected as complainers, fakers, or needed mental health attention. Or perceived as excuses to get out of work, or to leave or not participate in something.

As an adult I experienced a severe reaction to a sick building 20 years later at a newly constructed and popular sport store only years after being married. This brought back the connection to my childhood experience in the fabric stores. I remember walking into this fantastic sports center with my wife to look at camping and hiking equipment. I was very excited to go in and purchase gear for our next outdoor adventure. But I only got 50 feet within the space.

Then it happened.

The product off-gassing in this store was so strong [stronger than the fabric houses I recalled as a child], I quickly became disoriented and felt I was going to pass out and fall.  I immediately grabbed onto a shelf to steady my balance and then my wife helped me walk outside where the symptoms went away in a matter of seconds. To this day I’ve never gone back inside this particular store.

Prior to this episode I’d go shopping for clothes and always feel light headed, but could tolerate the effect. My wife always assumed prior to this sports store episode I used my childhood experience and suspected reaction to clothing fabric chemicals as an excuse to get out of shopping. In the past I had told her it was more of avoidance to not feel disoriented, sick or extremely tired. And I suspected it had to do with the chemicals emitted from heavy volumes of new apparel. She didn’t believe this to be truly factual until the severe reaction occurred in the sports store.

My wife realized at this point I was not faking this sickness to get out of shopping with her “come on, a sports store, hello.” As a matter of fact she was one minute away from calling 911. I felt as if I was experiencing a drug overdose. Not that I ever had an overdose, but you get the point.

Then years after working as a HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) technician, services, maintenance and project manager everything came full circle making the connection to unhealthy air environments and symptomatic ill-health effects. And only thereafter did those previous doctor visit tags: bored, in my head, coincidental, imagined, disinterested, food or cleaning product allergy, etc., completely go away, like the unnecessary doctor visits.

In understanding preventative maintenance practices on HVAC equipment and safe work space air standards, I’m able to immediately relate and sense unhealthy VOC and poor circulation environments. I simply don’t go into any space with an all too familiar concentrated chemical smell that could cause a severe respiratory and physical reaction. I do like to shop but like many others who share similar sensitivities to toxic air, I’m very aware when materials are still in the off-gas phase. And where bad, or poorly maintained ventilation and air circulation conditions exist.

No matter the enclosed space: work, home, retail, car; any form or combination of toxic air and poor ventilation may have an effect on health regardless of whether or not you experience any current symptoms. And when exposed to these toxins too long can cause medical problems and quality of life to suffer later on.

Recommendation: If you walk into a store and smell a strong chemical odor, and/or begin to feel sick, immediately leave and shop at a different place with better ventilation.  Write, or email management you’ll be back after they improve their preventative maintenance practices and improve fresh air circulation systems and/or scrub ductwork and heat exchange coils of contaminants.  I will not step foot into any store, or stay long within a new home or newly constructed building that brings about an immediate feeling of sickness.

Restaurants may have poor ventilation systems

Restaurants may have poor air ventilation systems

You’ll know this feeling when sensitive to certain toxins because you may first experience respiratory or eye, nose, throat irritation followed by a feeling of light headedness.

If you’re hypersensitive like me you’ll immediately feel tired, or disoriented, or lose focus and/or off balance. And if overwhelmed by VOC may feel like you need to lay down for fear of fainting and falling.  If off-gassing is causing a symptomatic ill-health effect in the home, or car increase outdoor fresh air intake, clean and/or change filters; have ventilation systems checked for equipment air quality and functionality.  If you can’t address these issues due to financial limitations, open some windows part way to increase fresh indoor air quality and circulate air with fan.

If the problem occurs at work contact senior environmental safety engineers and health services to report and get problem resolved.

In most cases, I cannot stand to be in any retail store filled with new clothes or near perfume sample stations long unless well-ventilated.  Also many home cleaning, new clothing apparel and building material products you breathe but not sensitive too are manufactured with “known chemical carcinogens that also off-gas within space.

Do not take my word for it go to any search engine on the Internet and type in “sick building syndrome, off-gas, home cleaning products and carcinogen,” you be the judge. For you and your children’s wellbeing, consider taking preventative air quality and clean green products measures to ensure your home is a healthy and a safe environment.

Doomed to Get Cancer

22 02 2015

IMG_20120517_174946Originally Published: May 1, 2008, Updated:  Feb 22, 2015

It is a fact that environmental toxic agents, poor dietary and exercise habits and poor consumer choices can cause cell mutation that may lead to the formation of cancerous tumors.   It is also a fact, cancer mortality rates throughout the globe have increased over the last decade. “7.6 million People died of cancer in the world during 2007.  13% of all deaths are due to cancer (American Cancer Society).”   And since then, cancer cases have risen globally.

Unfortunately “Cancer is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths in 2012 [World Health Organization, 2015].”

Are we all doomed to get cancer?  The risk of getting cancer is greatly reduced if one learns to pay attention to environment, lifestyle and consumer safety information and applies good lifestyle practices.

What do I believe is causing this increased rate?  I believe it has a lot to do with the lack of consumer safety and healthy habit lifestyle practices and environment awareness knowledge and education.

And since cancer cells can take many years to mutate and change into cancerous ones; none of us have any ideal, or believe this could occur within our bodies.  Or most don’t consider the possibilities of getting cancer, therefore don’t take the environmental and lifestyle risk factors seriously.  So lifestyle and environment don’t change until illness and disease have taken their course.

How do we get cancer?  There are many possible carcinogenic agents and toxins hidden within our environment and foods.  One must also consider genetic predisposition possibilities [does cancer run in the family].   If a biological family member has had cancer, suspect your body is more susceptible and sensitive  to similar types of cancer causing agents.  Also a neighbor who was born and raised in the same environment and without a history of cancer in the family will likely not be as sensitive to the agents that effect your family.  But this does not mean they are immune to cancer.

The American Cancer Society defines cancer as a disease which differs widely in cause and biology.  There are approximately 9 risk factors leading to cancer:IMG_0279  Tobacco smoking, alcohol, diets low in fruit and vegetables, limited physical exercise, unsafe sex, urban air pollution, domestic use of solid fuels and contaminated injections (Hep B & C).

Once cancerous tumors form they continue to grow and divide at a cellular level [metastasis].   Which can spread through the immune-lymph and circulatory blood systems, etc.  Tumors once malignantly formed, effect other healthy cells surrounding them.  Whereas these cancerous cells have the ability to target other tissues and organs throughout the body, spread and infect, grow and further divide.

Unless medical treatment is received in a timely manner to stop a malignant growth, spread and further cellular mutation, remission may not be possible.  It is for this reason, if diagnosed with Stage 2-3 cancer, it becomes very risky to put off proven cancer treatment that offers the best odds at survival and puts cancer into remission.  Opposed to trying new and untested treatments.  Once cancer reaches stage 4, the odds of remission and survival are greatly reduced even when conventional treatment is applied.

Our body is a filter and is capable of removing many toxins through our lymphatic system including carcinogenic agents.  This system has 3 basic functions.  1)  To clean the blood and remove waste from the body.  2)  It absorbs and transports fatty acids from the intestine and digestive system.  3) The lymph node cells called lymphocytes provide immunological defenses against disease-causing agents. When you increase cancer risk factors these lymphatic and circulatory filter system(s) become less functionally efficient.

And if unhealthy lifestyle, habits and/or environment don’t change within a period of time, the spread of cancer and tumor growth becomes more likely.   By unnecessarily exposing oneself to poor diet and unhealthy environment or continued bad habits and behavior, toxins in the body increase in concentration.   And these toxins may not cause cancer, but something worse.  For example, acute to chronic body-brain neurological, circulatory, and/or respiratory, etc., illness and disease.

How to Reduce Cancer Risk

  1. Obesity increases risk of developing cancer.  Reduce body weight through diet and exercise. See a doctor to help you lose weight and control diabetes.1390168824371
  2. Reduce refined sugars, excessive fats and reduce carbohydrates.  Increase plant based foods in diet to decrease risk of prostate and breast cancer (men/women).
  3. Studies have linked stomach cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer with “any” grilled meat and/or overconsumption of red meats.  Ingestion of meats alone is not the only problem.  Carcinogens are also released through the burning of the aromatic hydrocarbon which often occurs when you overheat and burn fats, fryDSC01339 and sauté oils.  Then inhale their carcinogenic burnt smoke fumes.  If you burn your cooking oils, open the windows, exhaust the air and dump the oil.  When burning oil, avoid inhaling the burnt smoke and refresh the oil before cooking.
  4. Cancer trials suggest that vitamin supplementation and/or consumption of fruitsIMG_20130405_175321 and vegetables will reduce cancer risks.  Take a daily vitamin & mineral supplement daily.  Especially if you’re not getting 3-4 servings per day of plant foods.
  5. Give up artificial sweeteners (Aspartame).  Read your food labels carefully.  There are now 6000 food products under various labels that list Aspartame as “other sweetener, sugar substitute and as a healthy sweetener alternative.  Sodas, flavored water, specialized coffee’s, processed baked deserts, candy and even IMG_20130405_175235some diet foods have high concentrates of Aspartame in them.  Be sure to Read MirrorAthlete’s publication, “Aspartame the Silent Killer.” Aspartame in the diet is highly suspect of causing cancer and a known obesity and diabetes causing chemical agent.
  6. If you live in a heavily carbon monoxide or chemical producing environment and/or your city drinking water requires high chemical concentrate treatment [chemical smells & tastes occur often in tap water]; and/or suffer from respiratory problems, consider moving from the area if possible.  If not possible, filter your water, improve indoor air systems and exercise outside on low smog days and exercise indoors on high smog days.  Also don’t burn wood or other heating fuels in unvented or uncirculated room space areas.   Remove toxic home use products and replace with natural cleaning products.
  7. The sun and manmade sources produce UV (Ultraviolet) rays.  These UV rays areDCIM100GOPRO known as electromagnetic radiation.  The sun is our main source of this radiation.  Manmade UV radiation is produced by tanning beds, x-rays and welding torches for example.  Limit exposure to electromagnetic radiation and cover up and use sunscreen to avoid overexposure of the sun’s rays when possible.
  8. Stop smoking and consuming alcohol.
  9. Practice safe sex and never use a shared or unsterilized needles.

The incidence of cancer rises dramatically with age.  And even more so when unhealthy lifestyle, habits, environment and other risk factors are ignored and not practiced.
