How did They Live Past 116

Healthy relationships contribute to long life spans

Updated:  22 December 2018

How do average people live well past 100 years of age and significantly longer with a  95 year average lifespan? Does it have anything to do with genetics, environment, habit, diet, exercise or something more or absent thereof?

First let’s examine some of the longest living centurion biographies on record. And after reviewing these biographies, we’ll connect the dots to make a correlation to their longevity lifestyle secrets.

During the 19th – late 20th Century – interviews before death relevant to  lifestyle and culture to include biography and genealogy was not captured through a scientific or epidemiological process. Therefor I’ll render an opinion based on assumptions extracted from the limited amount of biographical data of deceased subjects; and references at the end of the article.

Super Centenarian – Deceased Subjects of Observation,

Jeanne Calment (21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997) she lived 122 years, 164 days, place of residence Arles, France.   Jeanne Louise Calment surpassed previous Guinness Book of Record holders as the longest living confirmed human.  It was said Jeanne smoked more than 2 cigarettes per day and after an operation in 1994 she weighed 99 pounds where she became dependent on a wheelchair for mobility.  She attributed her long life and youthful appearance to olive oil which she used religiously in her food and on her skin. Included within her diet she drank port wine and consumed ~2lbs of chocolate weekly.  In total she outlived 329 undisputedly-verified super centenarians

Sarah Knauss-Clark (24 September 1880 – 30 December 1999) she lived 119 years, 97 days, place of residence, Hollywood and Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Sarah had a career as an insurance office manager and upon her marriage to Abraham Lincoln Knauss (December 19, 1878 – March 1, 1965) she spent her time as a home maker and was a skilled seamstress. Mrs.  Knauss was known as an extraordinary woman that pushed the envelope of longevity.  It was said, the reason for her longevity stemmed from the fact she was a very tranquil person and nothing fazed her. Also it is known that she enjoyed life because she had her health and could do what she wanted. Her interests and foods included: viewing golf tournaments, needlepoint and nibbling on chocolate turtles, cashews and potato chips. Her only child Kathryn Knauss Sullivan (November 17, 1903 – January 21, 2005) lived to be 101 and was 96 at the time of her mother’s death.

Lucy Hannah (16 July 1875 – 21 March 1993) she lived 117 years, 248 days, place of residence Born in Linden, Alabama and died in Detroit.  She moved in the great migration to escape the racial tensions that were prominent of the times in the Deep South.  Her parents survived slavery for which it is noted they were whipped daily until their freedom and thereafter suffered from trauma as a result of the physical and mental scars. Lucy married John Hannah in 1901 and had 8 children together. Two of her children were still living at the time of her death. The two sisters lived to be 100 years of age. And Hannah’s mother lived to the age of 99.

Marie-Louise Meileur (29 August 1880 – 16 April 1998) She lived 117 years, 230 days, place of residence Kamouraska, Quebec, Canada. It is known that Marie was married twice and between the two marriages had 4 children with first husband Etienne Leclerc from 1900 and where he died in 1911.  And then the super centenarian had six other children through her second marriage with Hector Meileur whom she married in 1915 until his death in 1972.  She had 85 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 57 great-great- grandchildren and 4 (3 x great grandchildren). Marie’s death was the result of a blood clot.

Maria Capovilla (14 September 1889 – 27 August 2006) She lived 116 years, 347 days and was recognized by Guinness World Records during her reign as the world’s oldest living person ever in South America and the southern hemisphere in Guayaquil. Ecuador. It is also interesting to note she is also the oldest human that had a life span living within three centuries. Born as Maria Esther Heredia Lecaro; she married a military officer, Antonio Capovill after his first wife died.  They had five children together, three (Hilda, 81, Irma, 80 and Anibal 78) of which were at Maria’s side prior to death.  Antonio passed in 1949.  She had 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.  She enjoyed watching TV, reading and walked without the assistance of a cane, but helped by an aide prior to the day of her passing. She also never smoked or drank hard liquor.

Although home bound for the last two years of life, she shared her home with eldest daughter Hilda and son-in-law. In an interview her traditional view of men and women stated her dislike, about how women today are permitted to court men, rather than men courting women.

During 2006 near time of death Maria’s health took a turn for the worse.  She could no longer read, she nearly stopped talking and no longer could walk without the assistance of two people. Just prior to her death she was able to sit comfortably in her chair and fan herself. She died just 18 days before her 117th birthday. Cause of death Pneumonia.

Tane Ikai (18 January 1879 – 12 July 1995) She lived 116 years, 175 days, place of birth Kansei, Japan.  She is the only fully verified person within Asia to reach 116 years of age. She married at the age of 20 had 3 sons and one daughter. At the age of 38 she left her husband. At the age of 89 she entered a nursing home. At the age of 109 she had a stroke where she remained bed ridden in a hospital until her death.  Cause of death kidney failure.

Besse Cooper (26 August 1896 – 4 December 2012) 116 years and surpassing Elizabeth Bolden’s 116 years, 118 days. Besse Berry Brown-Cooper of Sullivan County, Tennessee was married to Luther Cooper and had 4 children and widowed after 39 years of marriage. Luther was 68 at the time of his death. Mrs. Cooper lived on her farm and moved into a nursing facility at the age of 105. Recently, Cooper reached her 116th birthday in August 2012, the second-oldest verified person from Tennessee and surpassing Elizabeth Bolden who died in December 2006, at the age of 116 years and 118 days. When asked what the secret to her super centurion lifespan, she stated, “minding my own business” working outdoors and avoiding most junk foods and ate lots of vegetables.  Occupation: retired teacher.   Cause of Death: Respiratory Failure.

Elizabeth Bolden (15 August 1890 – 11 December 2006) She lived 116 Years, 118 days and at the time of her death recognized by Guinness as the oldest living person.  She was born in Somerville, Tennessee, the daughter of freed slaves.  She had 7 children, only two of which were alive at the time of her death (Esther, 89 and Mamie 86). Elizabeth had 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great grandchildren and 220 (3 x great grandchildren) and an amazing 75 (4 x great grandchildren). And in her final days of life she resided within a Memphis Tennessee nursing facility.  Elizabeth also lived a life spanning within three centuries.

Maggie Barnes (6 March 1882 – 19 January 1998) She lived 115 years, 319 days, place of residence, Johnston County, North Carolina.  She was born to a slave and married a tenant farmer. Eleven of her children preceded her in death, while 4 of her other children survived her after death. Mrs. Barnes died of a complication from a minor foot infection.

Christian Mortensen (16 August 1882 – 25 April 1998) He lived 115 years, 252 days, last place of residence San Rafael, California. Born in a village near the city of Skanderborg, Denmark, he then settled in Chicago and worked various trades: tailor, milkman, and restaurateur and factory worker. He was married 10 years, had no children and never remarried. Retiring near Galveston Bay, Texas; 28 years later it was claimed at the age of 96 he rode his bike to the Aldersly Retirement Community in San Rafael where he stayed until his death. He’s the oldest living male to date.

When asked for advice on his long life; he stated, “stay away from alcohol; drink lots of water, keep a positive attitude, keep good friends and singing” will help you live a long time. His diet preferences were mainly a vegetarian diet and he also drank a lot of boiled water. He smoked cigars believing if in moderation, it was not unhealthy.

In order to find out how these 10 individuals lived so long – we’ll compare environment, lifestyle, diet, behaviors and habits with the online data available. In this way we may understand what common denominators may have contributed to their long life spans.

Centenarian interview statements revealed prior to death [in bold – represents a healthy habit or behavior of moderation], were claimed by each individual to contribute to their long lives spans.

Conclusion,

All but one of ten centenarians lived in a statistically low cancer state(s) [excluding those that lived outside of the United States]. And all but one of the 10 was male. Christian Mortensen lived in Texas 28 years and then moved to a California nursing home at the age of 96.  He lived ~48 years in a statistically high cancer state and where it appears he spent the majority of his first ~68 years of life in Skanderborg, Denmark.  He lived ~116 years of age beating all other fellow men in longevity.

It looks like all 10 of these individuals lived within large families; most were married and/or had large circles of various interactive social-family relationships. It also appears mobility, stress reduction and positive mood was important contributors to overall wellbeing. As far as their habits and diets – it appeared they moderated the good with a “little” bad.  For the most part, their diets appeared healthy and most consumed very little if any alcohol.

Recall, 9 out of 10 of these super centenarians where female.  It is a fact that women live longer than men. This has a lot to do with metabolism, genetics, diet, body weight, habits and lifestyle. What specifically separates men from women? Men are greatly driven by hormones (read importance of testosterone on men’s health, Ref #8) which tend to cause more risky behavior and mood-stress characteristics. Also when testosterone levels drop, or become unbalanced in men during the aging process, this change tends to have a significant impact on men’s health and longevity. Male hormone replacement therapy monitored by a physician can help with low testosterone production, which may help support vitality and longevity while reducing health risk.

These centenarians shows us they lived relatively balanced lifestyles. They were physically and mentally active throughout their life span; they enjoyed personal and social gatherings and relationships mostly within large circles of friends and family. And for those residing in the United States lived mostly within low statistical cancer states (Ref #11).

They lived purposeful and mobile lifestyles, had positive attitudes, maintained low levels of stress, had good sense of humor, enjoyed selfless endeavors and shared their life experiences and stories with others. They also lived life to the fullest and without the crutch of habitual vices and little need of medications.

The Thyroid a Powerful Weight Regulating Gland

22 09 2018

Updated 22 September 2018

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck no bigger than a buckeye butterfly.  But this glands hormone also influences other hormone producing glands which have much to do with our weight and other important metabolic interactions and bodily functions.  Just because these glands are small, does not mean they are insignificant.

Walk More to Burn Additional Calories

It is seen through patient and animal research that hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) can cause many types of problems:  weight gain, depression, sluggishness, fatigue, bad mood, unhealthy appearance, impotence, water retention that adds to excess weight and cellulite, pear-shaped figure, infertility, PMS, hardening of the arteries, cystic breasts/ovaries (including breast/ovary cancer), irritability, bad complexion, puffiness under the chin, forgetfulness, irritability, apathy, dry skin, intolerance to cold, enlargement of the thyroid and unhealthy hair, nails and teeth.

If you have hypothyroidism to the degree where one quarter of the thyroid hormone thyroxin is produced, you may also suffer from chronic fatigue.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, hyperthyroidism causes an overactive thyroid gland condition that has the opposite effect on the body’s metabolism.  The “hyper” condition speeds up the metabolic process, causing underweight and hyperactive tendencies.

A more serious disorder from an underactive thyroid is a goiter (swelling in the neck area).  This occurs because the thyroids enlarge to compensate for lack of iodine in the diet.  However, a goiter can occur, even if you’re not iodine deficient.  This swelling or enlargement of the thyroid glands is also known as Graves Disease.  Regardless of whether you have a hypo/hyper thyroid condition, both conditions untreated can become a life threatening situation.

Before I get more into the meat of the matter let’s first understand what trace mineral stimulates the thyroids hormone “thyroxin” secretion.   A very important mineral is iodine.  There is also another one needed that works with iodine to manufacture the thyroxin hormone.  And that mineral is Tyrosine, an amino acid.  Luckily Tyrosine can be consumed through many types of high-protein foods such as chicken, milk, cheese, beans, bananas, soy products, peanuts, almonds, fish, turkey, etc.  Iodine, along with tyrosine is required to produce a normalized balance of the thyroxin hormone to stabilize our caloric burning furnace.

Spoil your children in moderation. Walk and share fun exercise activities with them.

There is a TSH (Thyroid-Stimulation Hormone) test that tells a treating physician if your thyroid is producing proper amounts of thyroxin hormone to keep your metabolic system balanced.  The test determines if your thyroid is working correctly through reading TSH levels in the blood.   This stimulator hormone is produced by the pituitary gland.  So as the pituitary gland slows down within the metabolic system it releases more TSH to signal “speeding” up the thyroids production of thyroxin.  This test can determine proper levels of TSH hormone in the blood.  The TSH hormone release is directly related to many interconnecting metabolic processes.  If all other metabolic processes are working correctly, the thyroid hormone release stimulated by TSH should normalize all metabolic functions which impact weight loss/gain and mitigate other disorders.  But if too little, or too much TSH is produced than the test will show ranges from under/over active and normal thyroid gland.

Normal TSH test scores will be between 0.4 and 2.5.  A low score of 0-0.4 is hyperthyroidism.  And if the score is between 2.5 and 4, this means there is risk for hypothyroidism.  Anything higher can lead to a major health concern.  Many doctors will resist treating patients until they hit a 10.  This is basically due to the delicate balance and interactions these hormones and chemical exchange relationships have on the entire metabolic system.  Nevertheless, if your measurement is at 4 or above, or below 2.5, you should discuss a treatment course with your medical specialist.

Although your thyroid only requires a hundred thousandth of a percentage of your body weight in iodine (150 micrograms daily – the best sources of iodine comes from seaweed, onions, seafood and salt); without it the thyroid cannot function.  If you don’t have enough of this mineral, you gain weight.  But if you get enough of it in your diet, adding more through supplementation will do absolutely no good because the glands function is balanced, or better known as “normalized effect”   That is, if your thyroid is functioning normal, iodine will not help because the thyroid is already normalized and functioning correctly.

If you must take an iodine supplement for an underactive thyroid, kelp is the best organic source.  It appears to have “the best “normalizing effect on the thyroid gland.  However, if your iodine dose is incorrect, it is possible to supplement with too much, or too little.  Some of the symptoms of iodine over supplementation include:  Severe acme, become underweight, emotional imbalances, hyper-activity, mental and emotional instability, negative effects on thyroid glands, skin irregularities (welts on arms/face, rough skin) and problems with focus, or spaced out feelings.

Getting enough iodine in the diet should not be a problem since we get it in our everyday table salt, processed and fast foods and through its presence in crop fertilizers.  However, the key issue with our iodine in our everyday diet is, most of us do not get organic iodine (e.g., seaweed, “kelp”).  Homeopathic doctors have prescribed kelp, vinegar, B6 and a lecithin diet for treatment of obesity and other types of preventative disorders for years.  The diet is also beneficial to brain tissue, sensory nerves and spinal cord.

However the normalizing effect of iodine benefits for an overweight problem gets lost in translation within the market place for those desperate to lose weight.  That is, consumers are lead to believe if iodine is good for the thyroid, than more is better whether you need it or not.  But there could be nothing further from the truth.   There is another way to look at this statistically.  Eighty percent of all thyroid cases are diagnosed as the hypo-type.  But this percentage does not equate to eighty percent of those that are obese have a thyroid problem.

Aerobic workouts good for the cardio Muscular endurance

Let’s also not forget those who choose “not to exercise, or eat healthy diets,” but have healthy thyroids with plenty of iodine in the diet.  They will not lose more weight by increasing iodine intake.  Also, 8 times out of 10 thyroid disorder diagnosis are more prominent in women than men.  And as a natural progression of aging, increased risk of thyroid disease occurs naturally.  And if you have an autoimmune disorder, type 1 diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis your at higher risk for thyroid disease.  These diseases and other factors are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to diagnosing whether or not your thyroid needs stimulation to help you manage your weight.

If you do supplement your diet with iodine, it is important to understand it is also important to get enough vitamin A as well.  Vitamin A allows the thyroid gland to absorb the iodine.  If absorption of iodine through the gland does not occur optimally, then the production of thyroxin will occur relative to the glands absorption rate.  Recall, with reduced thyroxin hormone production, you have a lower BMR that does not help your weight loss and overall health goals.

One last point I’d like to touch on regarding a hyper-thyroid condition.  There are many cases documented where speeding up the thyroids function will cause weight loss.  But there are also cases where speeding up the thyroid function causes weight gain.  You ask how this is possible.  Because, by increasing the metabolic function, you also increase appetite.  Here is another truth, for those that lost weight during hormone treatment, once the hyper-active treatment stopped the weight came back.

Dogs need exercise as well to keep their body weight healthy.

Therefore, it appears that thyroid treatment to treat obesity does not appear to be real useful in many obesity cases.  This is why you should seek a treating physicians advisement to get help identifying the cause of your weight gain problem.  If you are diagnosed with thyroid disease, then you’ll likely be prescribed a synthetic thyroxin to replace the hormone your thyroid can no longer produce.

By working with your doctor to adjust to the necessary doses, you’ll begin to look and feel better.  In other cases some of you may need a combination of treatments to regulate, or lose body weight that include thyroxin prescription, diet and exercise.  And in other weight loss/gain situations – relative to disease and disorder(s) diagnosis…

Varying medical treatment strategies may be necessary as opposed to thyroid treatment. The point being, your thyroid may not be the problem. It may be one of several other connecting hormone functions dependent on the thyroid hormone that has malfunctioned and needs treatment.

Disease Scientifically Linked to Genetic Engineered Food Crops

22 09 2018

Fast food’s consumed likely contain GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms)

Updated:  22 September 2018

I remember long ago our family would plant hundreds of vegetable seeds in mid May on the family farm.  This annual planting would produce a multitude of organic vegetables for meals.

Also one of our main crops (pumpkins) would be sold at the local market in October.

What we didn’t sell or consume would then be canned as a provisional food source that would last until next years crop was harvested. Times have definitely changed from when I grew up.

For as long as I can remember the foods farmed by American families were the most nutritious and healthiest throughout the world.  However, that distinguished honor is no longer the case.  A major factor for the decline of nutrition within the food industry has to do with escalating costs of farming foods-to-table.  This has led to farming foods in labs before it hits the shelf.

Most consumers don’t know food industry’s are made up of 8-10 major food chain monopolies.  But for the sake of simplicity I’m going to use a few examples of how  reengineering of lab farmed foods is harming health.  In this way it is easier to understand why it’s so hard for consumers to remove harmful foods from the diet… especially when labels don’t disclose GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) information. Monsanto has been producing man made GMO crop seeds and chemical food sweeteners (e.g., Aspartame brands: NutraSweet, Spoonful and Equal-Measure) for some time now.

Artificial Sweeteners in Nearly all non-concentrate.

Many food products consumed from the local grocery store now contain more engineered ingredients than one can imagine.  The likes of Procter & Gamble (P&G) foods corporation is one of the largest producers of products that are petroleum based and comprised of Genetically Modified (GM) crops produced from GMO’s seeds resistant to herbicides and pesticides as was the case in the popular Pringles potato chip product.

Not so long ago, some 800,000 cans of Pringles potato chips had been recalled in Japan because the potatoes used to make the chips had the “gene-altered NewLeafPlus and NewLeaf Y components developed by Monsanto in the vegetables DNA!  This gene altered potato is approved for consumption in the United States but not in Japan!  So one has to wonder, why is the gene altered potato still sold within American markets and not the Japanese markets?  And should this ban mean something to the American people?  I think it should and the proof is in what P&G did next.

They sold its Pringles business to the Diamond Foods Snack Company for $2.35b in 2011.  Then in 2012 the Diamond deal fell apart and the Kellogg Company bought Pringles for $2.7b in cash. Thereafter P&G decided to focus more on its house hold cleaners and beauty products. These products have know carcinogenic ingredients [i.e., household cleaners, pet foods, cosmetics and personal care products].

Could it be that P&G and Diamond Foods Snack Company’s didn’t want the consumer backlash? Could it be that the new shareholder coalition “Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility” and GMO health risk connection is making sense to the 40 plus food companies [i.e., Safeway, Sysco, Whole Foods, Kellogg, Kraft, Heinz, Hershey’s, Starbucks, etc.]. The shareholder coalition message to these companies reports how Monsanto and GE foods are bad for Investors. Could these decisions to bail out have anything to do with  consumer health and liability risk.

GMO Corporations have been criticized for funding anti-labeling attempts to prevent disclosure laws from becoming public knowledge, while also working to weaken Europe’s laws regarding toxins in household products. And now these messages have spread to the largest economies in the world!

California field ready to plant.

California consumer advocates continue to supports mandatory GMO labeling as attempted during a Ballot initiative in 2012.  Over 80% of polls support GMO labeling for consumers.  Since California is the 8th largest economy in the world if the initiative passed it would have had a dramatic effect on changing consumer packaging and ingredient decisions nation-wide.

“The California Senate rejected on Wednesday a bill that would require labels on genetically-engineered foods. This is the second time in two years that labeling legislation has fallen short in the most populous and agriculturally-productive state.” [RT.com, May 31, 2014]

“Now Colorado and Oregon have ballot measure out to the voters to determine if their states will support the labeling of GMO’s on food ingredients.” [MirrorAthlete, 23 Oct, 2014]

“While state-level initiatives continue, other groups are focusing their attention on passing labeling legislation at the national level. Among them is the Just Label It (JLI) campaign, a national coalition of more than 600 diverse organizations working for the mandatory federal labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods (JustLabelIt.org 2018). In time I believe GE labeling laws will become a mandatory federal law.

It’s interesting to note Monsanto and Procter & Gamble have the same institutional corporate owners.  The top institutional owner of P&G foods is “Warren Buffett’s” Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., holdings, which owns ~$4.9b in P&G stock (NYSE: PG).  Proctor and Gamble current revenues (ttm) are ~$83.68b.  Also Bill Gates invested and purchased 500,000 shares of Monsanto Stock (NYSE: MON) and supported the use of GM crop technology [data reviewed – Oct 2014]. I’m not sure about their positions to date.

It’s very difficult to make change to consumer product laws when windfall profits for investors, employee jobs, market economies and corporate holdings are at stake.

Regardless – No matter how much money these moguls have and what interests they control – They can’t hide the animal studies that tell consumers truths about GMO’s and potential impact on human health. Animal studies show how Monsanto’s GMO corn is likely linked to organ damage and Aspartame as a cause of diabetes and obesity.

Food carts – Serve some of the most unhealthy foods one could consume.

There are reported toxicity reactions divided by the estimated reporting rate and where scientific studies corroborate that chronic aspartame ingestion and health damage has affected well over one million consumers in the U.S.   This is not so hard to fathom especially when you think of all the sodas and processed foods consumed on an annual basis.  Artificial lab farmed sweeteners is one of the primary causes of diabetes and “near” childhood obesity epidemic in this country.

It is also not well known by consumers, Aspartame “Monsanto’s artificial sweetener” is 200 times sweeter than sugar per equivalent volume.  And is also one of the most taste altering addictions that stimulaties consumers taste preference for rich high fat calorie foods.  Science shows us Aspartame products are also responsible for Formaldehyde poisoning!  How’s that?  Aspartame is an unstable chemical when stored (warehousing) too long in warm temperatures, the chemical properties of the artificial sweetener within soda cans converts to another type of dangerous chemical.

Monsanto has contributed greatly to changing our entire food chain by genetically altering many food crops DNA molecular structure – through GMO technology and super sweetening of foods.

Genetically modified crops have never been an integral part of the human or animal diet prior to the mid-latter 20th century.  The health consequences for those who over consume GM crop products are currently unknown.  Various scientific animal studies reveal to us that GM livestock feed and processed food ingredients correlate a clear negative impact on the function of the kidneys and liver.  It is more important than ever that more research focuses on the toxicity and mutation GM crop varieties may have on vital organs and DNA.

Looking at Genetically Modified (GM) Crops a Little Closer.

GM lab farmed products is an engineered process where a recombinant (genetic recombination) technology uses DNA molecules from different sources to combine and create a new set of genes within crop seeds for example.  This is done to make crops more resistant to decay, insects, chemical fertilizers, etc.  In this way farmers can mass produce volumes of what appears to be healthy food for consumer markets using less chemical sprays and fertilizers.

It’s not just the GMO corn and potatoes that the consumers should be aware of when purchasing product within the marketplace.  For example, corn is not only available off the husk, but also comes canned, as cooking oil, or processed corn starch, etc. Products such as cereals and baked snacks (as in seen in our Pringles example) are processed from the same crops which likely have artificial sweetener additives as well!  Let’s not forget about the livestock being fattened up by GM corn feed.  Now you can see how our food and personal use products have been reengineered and connection to health problems.

Hyper-Sweetened foods contribute to disease

Is it any wonder “Corporate controlled and protected artificial sweetener testing continues at Monsanto, torturing the ethics of academic medicine?” [Prevailing Winds, Issue 1, 1995].   They do so without fear of retribution because the FDA, “our consumer protection agency” turns a blind eye by accepting these corporate studies as safe consumer products.  [US Congressional Record, Volume 131, No. 106, August 1, 1985, pages S10826-S10827]

Why does this type of regulatory protection continue?  I believe it has a lot to do with corporate, institutional and governmental greed, power and control.  This marketplace dynamic is contributing to higher health care costs and more obese children and adult health problems than any other time in history.

I’ve listed the Top GM Food Crops that likely contain GM DNA.  If you want to know more about artificial sweeteners and GMO crops, simply see the referenced links below.

Corn – Monsanto revealed 50% of American sweet farm growers now use GMO seeds that have been modified to create its own insecticide.  Mice studies show when fed with GMO corn, offspring are smaller and there were fertility problems.

Tomatoes – GM tomato seeds prevent the vegetable from easily rotting and have been specifically engineered for longer shelf life.  Some mice fed these tomatoes after a couple of weeks died.

Dairy Products – Monsanto has created a recombinant (genetically modified) bovine growth hormone that’s injected into 22% of our U.S. dairy cows to increase insulin growth factor (IGF-1).  It is warned by scientists that increase in IGF-1 in humans have been associated with colon and breast cancer.

Potatoes – Mice fed potatoes with Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki Cry 1 had toxins in their bodies.  Although studies show stability of the Cry1 toxin in the mouse gut, there have been studies that show just the opposite results.

Peas – A gene from kidney beans was inserted into the DNA of peas to create a protein that functions as a pesticide.  This GM crop has been found to cause immune responses in mice.  However, it is not known the impacts on human consumption.

Rice – South East Asia’s rice is now GM to contain high levels of vitamin A.  It is not known if rice production in the U.S. in now GM rice varieties with human protein genes to help thwart infant diarrhea in 3rd world countries.  Unknown allergic reactions and other mutated gene transfers are now of a serious public health and environmental concerned as reported by an online journal, China Daily.

Soy – Products that are manufactured from the soy bean now have the GE resistive herbicide DNA structure within various foods (Soy products: flour, tofu, beverages, oil, pastries and baked products).  Hamsters that were fed GE soy products resulted in infertility and a high mortality rate.

Cotton – Cotton has been GM to resist pesticides like corn and soy.  Cotton is considered food because cooking oil can be extracted from the seeds and consumed.  Thousands of Indian farmers suffered severe rashes upon exposure to Chinese agricultural methods in order to kill the cotton bollworm.

Does organic without certification really mean organic?

Rapeseed – Canola is made from the edible Canadian Rapeseed crop; which most are familiar as a popular processed cooking oil and margarine.  Honey can also be produced from GM rapeseed.  As much as 1/3 of all pollen present in Canadian honey may likely be GM pollen.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact our health.

Papaya – Papaya crops produced in Hawaii was modified in 1999 to be virus-resistant.  Also, Monsanto provided Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India the GM technology to further develop a resistant ring spot virus papaya for India.  For lack of animal studies it is unclear how these GM food sources will impact health.

As consumers need more to worry about…  Research is also beginning to show links to Morgellon’s Disease correlated with GM recombinant foods.

This disease a few years back was a mystery, or something one conjured up in the head.  But the opposite is being shown to be the case.  Patients have presented strange skin irritations, skin anomalies and most specifically a mysterious tiny blue, red and black fiber growth that protrudes from an itchy skin lesion on areas of the body and where GM foods are concentrated, sold and consumed.  There appears to be a direct correlation with these fiber samples that are not of human DNA origins, but in fact when comparing these fiber samples, Ahmed Kilani (researcher) found they belonged to a fungus.  Then it was found by Vitaly Citovsky (biochemist) and determined that these fibers contained a substance called “Agro bacterium.”  This substance is used commercially to produce genetically-modified plant foods!

For now, the lack of national labeling requirements makes it hard to know which foods have GM ingredients.  You’re also now aware ~10 of our major farmed food staples may be partially or fully produced from GM seeds.  And other products such as dairy, fish, meats and processed snack foods could have GM ingredients.

Regardless of organic certification – local farmed foods are typically better than most store bought foods outside of local farms.

Recommendation – If you currently have immune, or other health, illness or disease issues, or are concerned about GM foods – consume more organic foods.  The best prevention to mitigate possible health risks from GM foods is to shop as organic as possible and purchase more foods labeled “certified organic.”

Be sure to vote for GMO food labeling disclosure laws when it gets on your states ballots as it is your right to know what your consuming!

Control Diabetes & Lose Weight Naturally

20 01 2018

Visit COOL-places that motivate you to walk more.

Last Updated:  20 January 2018

A good way to manage diabetes and lose weight safely is to understand the connection between the different types of carbohydrate foods consumed…  And the effects unhealthy food choice has on blood sugar levels can lead to illness and disease.

Learn how to select healthier food choices listed in a Glycemic Index (GI).  When applying this knowledge consistently – helps to maintain safe blood sugar levels and supports safe and natural weight loss.

The Glycemic Index (GI) ranks carbohydrate foods on a scale of 0-100.

Zero represents foods low in absorbable blood sugars – whereas 100 is at the top of the high absorbable sugar content of foods.  When blood sugar levels increase above safe levels, or blood sugar count is above 105-110 for sustained periods of time, the body produces more insulin.  This hormone regulates blood sugar levels for metabolic use and stores the unused energy-fuel into fat cells for later use to get work done.

How are Low-GI foods a healthier choice?  Because they are low absorbable sugar foods [carbohydrates] they are slower to digest and absorb more efficiently into the blood stream.  Low-GI foods have a better metabolic efficiency exchange to regulate blood sugar levels, body weight and reduces other related illness and disease health risk associated with obesity.

In short, diabetes is defined and diagnosed as type 1 or 2. Whereas insulin function is designed to sustain “healthy blood sugar levels and metabolic receptors.” However when insulin and receptor function become less efficient, or break and not medically treated – blood sugar levels remain high and weight continues to increase as well as health risk.

To learn more about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the differences between the two – Click on the link to learn more on topic,Diabetes a Serious Disease.”

Both simple and complex carbohydrates are necessary in the diet to maintain good health.  However it is a balance of quantity and quality of total carbohydrate calories consumed that can predict an obesity or pre-diabetic course.  Eating too much of any one food, or the same types of macro and micronutrients daily without variety [Tip: Balance macro nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats] – can lead to any number of health risk problems – the focus here is overload of high sugar concentrate foods.

It is the complex carbohydrates [low sugar concentrate foods] that also delay hunger pains, making weight loss an easier proposition; while alleviating, or preventing the symptoms of diabetes.

Also don’t be fooled in believing “ONLY” low glycemic foods listed within an index can fully remove or resolve all ill-health symptoms; and/or health risk when sedentary and other bad habits and behavior don’t change.

Walk Daily – Get Fit Healthy

The other 50% of the healthy metabolic exchange equation requires daily aerobic exercise.

I’ve worked with many clients throughout the years providing them Customized Fitness and Healthy Habit Programs relative to lifestyle.  Once they learned how easy it was to apply a balanced whole foods diet and exercise daily – weight loss goals were achieved.  Learn More at:  Weight Loss and Fitness Secrets Revealed – New Year New You!

The food groups listed below are determined by medical and dietary professionals as healthier food choices for anyone. Especially those diagnosed as obese and/or with diabetes.

The American Diabetes and American Dietetic Associations have not yet adapted the GI concept.  It appears this has more to do with lack of empirical data required of each food group within the macronutrient-carbohydrate category.  Regardless of empirical data – the GI provides healthier food choice selection for anyone… whereas a majority of the medical community would acknowledge the index as a safe and nutritious guideline for those needing to lose weight safely and control blood sugar levels.

If you have not been successful at weight loss, I highly recommend you request a referral from a primary care physician to see a diabetic, metabolic, or endocrine specialist.  Also ask the medical specialist about healthy food choice using a preferred Glycemic Food Index (GI).  Find out more about GI food choices through an Internet search engine, or visit your local book store.

Listed below are a few food examples listed in the GI.

Eat more healthy farmed fresh whole foods

Lower Glycemic Food Index (GI).   Sugar alcohols (Sorbitol, Maltitol) Soy drinks, milk, yoghurt, Sweet potatoes, yams, vegetables, Fruits – plums, pears, peaches, grapes, grapefruit, cherries, bananas, apples, avocados, fresh juices.  Dried beans, peas, lentils.  Spaghetti, pasta, Basmati rice, Whole grain breads and pita Nuts and seeds.

Higher Glycemic Food Index (GI) Ice cream (low-fat), frozen yogurt.  White bread, doughnuts, croissants, rice cakes, bagels.  White potatoes, corn, white rice.  Low fiber cereals – Cornflakes, RiceKrispies, Fruit loops, etc.  Pineapple, cantaloupe, watermelon, ripe bananas.  Soda, sugar sweetened sports and energy drinks.  Candy, sugar.

High Glycemic Deserts

If you get into the habit of choosing and consuming healthier foods – It will take about 2 weeks to naturally begin craving them.

Giving up an addictive hyper-palatable food habit is the toughest challenge for those struggling with unhealthy body weight and diabetes.  However, if you can stick to healthier low sugar content food group; you’ll feel better, have more energy, lose weight and experience less hunger pain while increasing fitness levels.  And just maybe you’ll be less dependent on certain medications.

Sedentary habits and behavioral disorders aren’t the only cause of unhealthy weight gain. Limited mobility, genetic disorders and other medical conditions must be considered and treated by a medical specialist, especially when complicated by obesity and diabetes.

As a side note…  never forego taking prescribed medications even if you improve diet and have significant weight loss and experience relief of diabetic, or other ill-health symptoms.  Follow all doctor prescription and treatment recommendations.

Good health to you and your family.

Consumers Bilked by Fitness Pitch Half-Truths

20 07 2017

Updated:  20 July 2017

Do you recall infomercials and advertisements where exercise gadgets and weight loss supplements, etc., promised great weight loss or muscle building results?

Remember the abs flex, thigh buster and trampoline equipment and plethora of herbal supplement and dietary programs that guaranteed fat would melt away like butter.   Or the latest DVD or fitness class promoting High Intensity Interval Training [HIIT], or dance, boot camp, spinning class, or circuit-like exercise promised to be your ticket to Atlas or body beautiful status.

If your familiar with these things, you’ve also noticed a celebrity, athlete or other recognized talent, or regular Joe in magazine photo or infomercial to sell the product or program.  They also appear to be the picture of perfect health.  Or their before and after shots were impressive and had your attention.

They proclaim these products and services worked for them, so they’ll work for you… right?  But are all of them being truthful on how they really lost 30lbs of weight, or gained 10lbs of muscle in 4 weeks.  How about the photos that woo you into buying their goods.  Did you know most body shots are taken at opportune times – some after severe diet restriction and/or exercise regiment using high risk substance application.  Many of these pics are also doctored up through air brushing…

Have you noticed the before and after shots of the models who appear in those infomercials, magazines and Internet adds?  Most of them appear to be between 18-35 years of age.  It is true, human metabolism before the age of 35 is pretty responsive to significant diet and exercise change.  Especially if the body has been sedentary and unconditioned for some time.  When this is the case young metabolisms respond fairly well to daily exercise and/or calorie intake reduction.  Often resulting in significant appearance change in a short period of time.  But these quick results are short lived… especially when old habits resume.

“The kettlebell or girya (Russian: ги́ря) is a cast-iron or cast steel weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.” [Wikipedia]

If you’ve invested money and time into an exercise or diet fad or product gimmick and it didn’t work for you, you’ve likely been consumer bilked by a fitness pitch half-truth.

To understand this concept and meaning simply inventory how many unused exercise items, supplements, DVD videos and diet books and mag’s you have lying dormant in your home.

After you’ve done the inventory I have two questions for you.  Why do they lay dormant?  And if they didn’t work, why didn’t you at least use the satisfaction guarantee to get your money back?

If you didn’t receive the results as expected, was it because you didn’t apply enough effort or follow the exact instruction as required?  Regardless of instruction, effort or results did the program or product meet your expectations?  If it didn’t… again why does it lay dormant in your home?  In any case, you didn’t return the product.  In-part, I understand why the consumer continues to be bilked by these industries and acquire an ever growing collection of fitness antiques and conversation pieces.

I’ve worked within and studied the marketplace, business models, human behavior, fitness, health and nutrition industries for years.  I know many of those self-proclaimed fitness guru’s, celebrity stars, athletes and body building experts have been telling false and half-truth narratives for a long time.  While taking advantage of those desperate to turn the hands of time back, lose weight, get fit and even increase athletic and sexual performance.

The reason the diet, supplements and exercise gimmicks and fads continue to rake in big bucks… “most consumers are not educated in the science of exercise, health, nutrition, marketing, sports psychology and behavioral profiling.”  Yes, Exercise Science [or Physiology] and sports psychology are real undergraduate degrees offered at many universities that incorporate various disciplines of study relative to exercise training, sports performance, healthy lifestyle and fitness goals.”

Walk or bike to work and burn more body fat

The marketers and celebrities are street smart.  They know how to slant a sales pitch and hook consumers into buying the latest fitness fad, craze and product hype.  Then Re-brand, advertise and promote the same program under a different name than originally designed.

This practice is similar to marketing pharmaceutical drugs.  That is, “re-labeling” a drug [like-fitness product or service]” and using it to treat a different illness or disease than originally approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Admin).

Marketers are very familiar with this relabeling and rebranding tactic using a revamped marketing plan for a chosen demographic – making old fads new and relative again for the next generation.

Walk or bike more to destination places. Get low-impact aerobic exercise and enjoy outdoor marketplaces.

Regardless of age, if you don’t enjoy the lifestyle change experience for whatever reason, then the new exercise routine or diet-change is not compatible for you.  If it’s not compatible with your lifestyle for whatever reason, then the odds of sticking with it is not good.

For instance, if your sold on High Intensity Interval Training [HIIT] classes and DVD home workouts, do you have the will power to train intensely and consistently for the next 4-6 weeks?  What about breaking through the sore muscle, or hungry stomach barrier?  Have you acquired the right type of instruction, information, education, motivation and will power to continue the course and avoid overeating after exercise?  After all it is scientifically proven intense exercise will make you hungrier.

Do you have the will power and desire to work through healthy habit changes that will initially cause discomfort from your daily routine?  Hunger and soreness are deal breakers for many looking to lose weight and improve physical appearance.

The fitness marketer or celebrity expert is not going to tell you these things.  Like an Ab Crunch contraption “cannot spot reduce” fat away in one area.  Instead tones the muscles.  It doesn’t bust belly fat.  Or without a combination of lifestyle habit and behavioral changes the weight loss and muscle building results may or may not occur, let alone last long term.

What do marketers and opportunists know about consumer needs and wants most people don’t think about?

They know how to target and lure an audience based on past shopping habits and behavior.  Also how to embellish a sales pitch and sell in-factual information.  Many of the claims made are not based in scientific fact, truth, or FDA approved research and findings.  In order for these claims to hold any water they must be scientifically proven through credible lab research and performed by a renowned organization or institution.

This is not to say, “all innovative exercise gadgets and weight loss fads don’t work.”

Pilates and balance balls and weighted tire exercises are used to improve balance, posture, strength and tone.

In fact we know many do when individuals set realistic diet, exercise, sports training and relative lifestyle change goals.

Exercise science proves daily exercise and reasonable-balanced diet can provide the fitness results you seek including sustainable weight loss.  And can also lower health risk factors for many types of disease including: cardiovascular, diabetes and cancer.

Experts in exercise physiology prove balanced diet and exercise sustains body tone and improves strength, flexibility and muscular and cardiovascular-endurance for any age.  Including healthy longevity, increased energy levels and libido.

I assure you marketers understand a number of prospects will be unknowledgeable of such things, meaning an endless supply of consumers who will buy the hype and not return products for a number of reasons including, “hope the product will eventually work.”  By the time most figure out it won’t work for them the warranty runs out.  The interesting aspect if of it all, many consumers fall for a similar fitness fad or gimmick the next time around.  The cycle continues…

Walking is a great low-Impact aerobic exercise and fat buster.

Customers have been conditioned to believe exercise or diet is necessary to lose weight.  And these things are mostly true.  But if daily exercise, diet and habit change is not programmed relative to individual lifestyle and fitness goal it will be short lived.

“In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless,” says Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University, a prominent exercise researcher.  Although exercise does burn calories, it also makes us hungrier.

“Exercise, in other words, isn’t necessarily helping us lose weight. It may even be making it harder.”  A famous Time’s Magazine article “Why Exercise Won’t Make you Thin,” by John Cloud also performed a controlled study that coined “compensation effect.”

Basically the more you exercise the more you want to eat.  For a significant portion of a population – the wrong type of exercise causes weight gain.  This provides opportunity for the same marketers to plan and sell the next weight loss hype.  See how this works…  They make money on both ends of the exercise and diet industries.

The major reason consumers continue to purchase weight loss fads, exercise and fitness gimmicks is because reputable organizations like the “American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association guidelines in 2007 state “to lose weight…60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary. That recommendation covers most days of the week.”  I know this statement is mostly true.

But the marketers distort these statements and other facts to sell more products and services not relative to individual needs.  In other words, the goods are not programmed to work relative to all lifestyles, demographic-genetic factors; fitness and health goals, or compatible with medical profile.

Again the marketplace won’t voluntarily tell you these things because they’d likely lose repeat sales purchases.   Why would they change their behavior to change yours if they knew it would reduce their profits?

This is how the diet, fitness and anti-aging industries continue to bilk the consumer and enrich themselves.  Often at the expense of consumer health and wellbeing.

My recommendation:  Before you buy into the next fitness or weight loss product or program hype it would do your body and pocketbook good to do your own due diligence.  Here at MirrorAthlete we expose the lies, half-truths and truths – we don’t sugar coat anything.

If you want to know more about consumer safety, customized fitness and healthy lifestyle programming, ill-health prevention – we offer at no charge everything you need and want to live life to the fullest.

Walking is a Superior Fat Burning Activity

17 07 2017

What many people don’t know is during low-intensity aerobic exercise like walking the muscles prefer to burn fat fuel.

That’s right the metabolic energy needed to walk prefers stored body fat to move the large muscles in the legs and buttocks.

But those same muscles used during high-intensity aerobics exercise like running, sprinting or high intensity aerobic dance or boot camp training prefer mostly blood glucose [sugar] and stored liver and muscle glycogen fuel from carbohydrate conversion.

When intense exercise is performed the priority of fuel need by the metabolism is blood sugar and stored carbohydrate energy… and less body fat fuel. Thereafter the body needs to replenish the quick energy storage tank. That’s one reason why high intensity exercise cause carbohydrate food cravings… thereafter many become famished, overeat and gain weight. The point here is – “you don’t have to train hard to lose body fat weight and experience extreme carbohydrate food cravings that add undesired body weight.”

City trail pathways are a great for daily walking activity.

It will take approximately 1-2 weeks to become addicted to a daily walk habit to lose more body fat and body weight. However everyone differs slightly in metabolism, exercise and activity interest, intensity, frequency and duration where fitness results and weight loss do vary. But in the end, daily low-impact aerobics exercise will help moderate food cravings and increase will power to continue the exercise and natural weight loss course

Join a walking group and stay motivated to repeat the daily activity..

To improve the odds of sticking to a daily  exercise habit, 10 lifestyle changes will help sustain daily exercise activity and weight loss goals 1) Stop substance abuse and unhealthy over indulgences.  2) Get 6-8 hours of sleep. 3) Remove yourself from unhealthy and stressful environments. 4) Make the time for “daily” low impact exercise activity. 5) Eat more fresh whole foods like fruits and vegetables and less processed and high sugar foods. 6) Invest in a good pair of walking shoes with insole inserts if needed. 7) Don’t quit after 1 or 2 days of walking activity, be consistent and exercise on a daily basis. 8) Give up artificial sweeteners, they cause weight gain and acute and chronic disease. 9) Drink more water daily – up to 8 glasses will help with weight loss and reduce weight bearing joint pain. 10)  Find a walk group, or walking partner.  This will provide more will power to stay the course.

When beginning a daily walk program it doesn’t’ require much will power to get started. But it does require commitment. The excuse I often hear people use to avoid any form of exercise, “I don’t have the time.” But if you can make time you’ll lose weight and feel better almost immediately. If you haven’t exercised for awhile it may feel uncomfortable and you may experience a little soreness. But if you can walk or bike at least 15-30 minutes or more each day you’ll notice results and feel better in no time.  Remember, “Rome was not built in a day.”  Slow down and let your body adjust to the weight bearing exercise activity.  Then increase duration and intensity over a period of days.

Low Impact Aerobic Dance is a great fat burning activity.

I’ve had plenty of overweight clients walk or ride a stationary bike for a year before they achieved successful weight loss. Thereafter participated in a long distance walk, hike, jog or ran or biked a marathon. They never imagined being capable of doing anything like it. They simply believed it possible because they could relate to the low-impact aerobics and fat burning engine truths.  Truths that got them pointed in the right direction to achieve greater fitness goals.

Now go get addicted to the natural feel good chemicals and fat burning metabolism produced by your own body through low aerobic exercise.  Dance, walk, jog or ride a bike but don’t overdue it.  Then reap the ideal body weight, healthy longevity and increased mobility and energy benefits you need, want and deserve!

Good Health to You and Your Family.

Natural Weight Loss Secrets Revealed

22 02 2017
Aerobic workouts good for the cardio Muscular endurance

Is this the secret to safe weight loss?  The answers may surprise you.

Updated 22 February 2017, Marc Woodard

It seems as we age and for many body fat seems to increase each year.

And with that being said, a commitment to improve eating and exercise habits seem to fail miserably each year.

We tell ourselves we’re going to get serious this time and lose that excess body weight once and for all.  However for many it is thought easier said than done.

But you can easily loose this thought once you learn how easy and effective it is to apply truthful weight loss knowledge that works long term.

There are hard truths for most people to accept and therefore they look to fast track weight loss using dangerous diet products and weight loss concoctions found in the marketplace.  But if you can accept it took years to become unfit and unhealthy and will take some time to reverse the situation I can help you do this naturally and at no cost… provided you’ve not broken your fat burning metabolism through years of abusive fad diets, supplements or drug abuse.

What would you say if I could show you how to improve health, lose weight safely, increase fitness and energy levels and longevity?  And it will only require two things.  A little will power and commitment each day.

Would you be interested in knowing what information I’m willing to give at no cost?  Most of you would say I’m all ears.  What’s the catch?

“No Catch.”

“No I’m not talking about a magic pill.”

“Nor do I have some other hidden agenda to get into your wallet.”

“Why would I provide this valuable information at no cost?”

What’s bothered me for years is watching the marketplace charlatans promote and sell weight loss and muscle building gimmicks that don’t work long term and make people sick.  Their not interested in providing natures truths.  Their only interested in selling a quick results fitness gimmick to get your money.  And if you get sick using it they accept no responsibility.  I’ve worked with too many clients over the years and fully understand this reality.  I take my profession seriously and believe this truth belongs with consumers to make the best decisions possible with regard to their health.

Consider the information I’m providing a way to give back to those that provided me valuable information when I needed it most in my life.

There is no need for pills or fitness gimmicks to lose weight.  Especially when you understand how your body produces powerful chemicals during low impact activities that melts away body fat and addicts you to the weight loss commitment without artificial and dangerous chemical product gimmicks.

And believe me the fitness and diet industries don’t want you to have this knowledge, why?  Because if consumers understood this information on a large scale there’d be no need to purchase their products and they’d lose revenues.

Pure and simple.  What I’m providing are exercise science truths.  Yes, Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology is a real undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degree.

If your looking to choose a specialized diet or fitness plan, don’t get duked into one that guarantees quick results and increases health risk!   Most processed dietary foods and anabolic supplements [including formulated herb concentrates] in the marketplace use unhealthy diuretic and stimulant chemicals  that compromise the body at a cellular level and can ultimately make you sick and cause disease.

Also many fitness trainers in typical gyms don’t have the expertise to program exercise and dietary prescription relative to age, current health condition, lifestyle goals and fitness profile.  Hence the customer often experiences paying too much for services that may work short term, or not at all.  Or they quit before real results take effect.  Either way they have your money and you’ve failed another weight loss commitment.

These “quick fix” fitness fad concoctions are chemically addicting and increases health risk the longer used to keep weight off, or enhance physical performance, or appearance etc.  Thereby causing more metabolic harm and unnecessary mental and physical pain and suffering that need not be.
